It's a critique of society and just how filthy humanity can be at times. I mean it's interesting because as a taxi driver in NYC you literally have the potential to see almost every type of person. By the end of the movie, De Niro just doesn't give a ****. Honestly, I probably don't even have close to a full understanding of Travis Bickle after watching it twice.
