That one of our political parties can consistently support any measure that will lower the wages of American workers. And will get more than 2% of the vote. That money will go to teacher salaries. It will increase the average teachers pay about 6k per year. It passed 52-48. Janus is arguing that he cannot be forced to pay a representation fee to a public sector union as a condition of employment by the state. If the court rules in favor of Janus, as is widely expected, it will be yet another blow against unions, further weakening workers’ power. Under current law, the federal government gives states the option of allowing “agency shop” provisions in contracts under which everyone who is covered by a union contract. Twenty-four states, including California and New York, allow such contracts. These contracts make it easier for unions to organize and to be a strong presence in the workplace since they prevent workers from being able to freeload. Without an agency shop provision, workers would be able to get the pay and benefits negotiated by the union, and even the right to have union representation in disputes with management, without having to pay a penny for those union supports. While most workers support their union and will pay representation fees without being required by a contract, recent experience indicates that between 20 to 30 percent of workers will take the freeloading option. This hugely weakens the union if they lose 20 to 30 percent of their revenue. They can not require us to be in a Union. And many teachers are not. What I didnt mention was this- The 5 members of the School Board all supported it and were the driving force behind the PAC. 2 of the 5 were not elected, but rather were APPOINTED by the Republican Governor of the state. 2 more are members of the Local GOP (though not the Tea Party). Guess who opposed it until a week or two prior to the election? Yup. The local teachers union. Why? Because the proposal was going to increase the school days by 30 minutes to add more STEM time. At least that was the publicly stated reason. My opinion is that they opposed it because they will now lose a major excuse they use when negative stats come out. I would also stretch to say that i dont think teachers ever should be wealthy or very highly paid. I think it would attract the wrong type of personalities to the profession. That might be a separate conversation however. I digress, what irks me is the double standard almost all republicans have when it comes to teachers vs other public servants. Mention cops or firefighters and its all hands on deck... raises, pensions, whatever they want. My county recently approved, overwhelmingly, a raise for prison guards and a pension. Prison guards!!! Meanwhile, teachers in this country making 40k (which isnt even a real living wage) and they are constantly **** on by politicians. I saw one from arizona say on the nightly news this week say "we have a lot of other financial needs right now" in reference to the teachers potential pay raise. Can you imagine one of these gop lawmakers saying that in reference to police or firefighters? Unimaginable. Beat cops are making more than teachers nowadays. Its nothing for a police veteran to make 6 figures where i live.... without any management responsibilities. A veteran teacher would make $43k. I know because thats what my wife makes. And how about that conservative ****stain we all know who immediately starts talking about the teachers he had geowing up, and how they were all lazy? This coming from the douche that eeked by with a C average. Mention blue lives matter though and this ****sucker will ask where to send the check The GOP needs to start redefining the term `hero`. I never thought about it this way before. I do think teachers are criminally underpaid but I never thought to compare them to other public servants. Cops I think I can get. Along with firefighters, that's a pretty dangerous job and I think you should be compensated accordingly. I still don't think they are paid enough to be honest. But I never thought to compare teachers to them. I think you get those politicians because of the voters. Republican voters tend to side with authority figures more than educational ones from my experience. Cops yayyy! Liberal colleges booo! I think that plays a role in it. I have a particular dislike of all the baby boomer Democrats who got ****ing curb stomped by the GOP on the issue of unionization and labor rights in this country. Cops and firefighters and prison guards vote Republican. Thats also why why union busting red states make it illegal for government workers to unionize, except for cops and firefighters.
