I especially loathe the old white senator contingent of the GOP.

These maga-ts have brought out the ageist and  racist in me and left me often indistinguishable from some hyper-partisan liberal due to my regular virulent takes on the republican  sewage pouring out all over the country. I done been radicalized!!!

A 'prophetic' Alexander Hamilton note described Trump almost to a T

This week, former President Donald Trump proclaimed in one of his Truth Social tirades that, "Our Founding Fathers are looking down at Biden with scorn right now. They’re looking down at Biden and this administration with disbelief.”

But the irony of this statement, wrote conservative commentator Charlie Sykes for The Bulwark on Friday, is that in fact, the founders spent an enormous amount of their writings preoccupied with the worry a person like Trump would take power. And indeed, Alexander Hamilton made an almost "prophetic" warning of a person like Trump in a letter to George Washington in 1792.

In the letter, Hamilton outlines his worries about a demagogue rising to power through unprincipled attacks on the entire governing class that went along with promises that he alone could fix what ails the nation.

"When a man unprincipled in private life desperate in his fortune, bold in his temper, (possessed of considerable talents, having the advantage of military habits), despotic in his ordinary demeanor, known to have scoffed in private at the principles of liberty, when such a man is seen to mount the hobby horse of popularity, to join in the cry of danger to liberty, to take every opportunity of embarrassing the General Government & bringing it under suspicion, to flatter and fall in with all the nonsense of the zealots of the day, It may justly be suspected that his object is to throw things into confusion that he may ‘ride the storm and direct the whirlwind,’" stated the letter from Hamilton.

Is it remotely possible that he believes that?

No. He admitted years ago that it was never more that just an empty campaign promise:

Quote

"When during the campaign, I would say Mexico is going to pay for it, obviously I never said this. I never meant they're going to write out a check," Trump told reporters at the White House Thursday before departing for a review of the situation at the U.S.-Mexico border in Texas.

He's just trying another way to get people to believe his BS.

"Perception is reality"

Perception is that Biden is too old.  Perception is the President owns the economy.  Perception is that a President on trial for criminal offenses is some political witchhunt and somehow not legitimate.  That the GOP still is considered a legit party, is insane.  Guess our country just wants constant tax cuts for the rich, immigrant blaming and right wing populist gaslighting. And the media will push that agenda too.

If 25 percent of voters are true undecideds -- and to the tailgate commetarist like us who are pretty decided it feels weird there are undecideds -- and those 25 percent believe the negative perceptions about Biden, and none of the negatives on Trump, Trump will landslide him.  Biden barely won the electoral college.

I don't want to believe in such a gullible and uninformed electorate.  At the same time, I am not convinced that 4 years of Trump will bring on a facist dictatorship.  I think most people are sick of these guys.   And some people don't take things as serious.

What's the harm in switching to Gavin or Gretchen (sorry Kamala) or someone younger?  If the case for Biden is "his staff is competent" -- Gavin et al can keep that staff.

The GOP has basically "Clinton'd" Biden.  They tried to with Obama.... but it was much less credible.

No one is polling as a Trump voter, because Biden needs to step aside.

Well, OK.  Maybe somewhere there's a few Bernie Bros who are dumb enough to do that.

You don't think that Biden's performance is the reason he is polling so poorly? There are a ton of people who don't support Trump but will hold their nose and vote for him because they believe the country went downhill when Biden took office.  If Biden was a strong President I believe Trump would have no chance. But he is not so Trump has a very good chance.

The country did not go downhill when Biden took office.

And the only people who think that it did, have their head up Trump's ass.

Counterpoint:  Trump is the weakest contender to Biden.  There are at least 4 attack lines against Trump that didn't exist in the previous campaign. No one has really pushed these ideas hard..  and there's so much ammo for a debate.  Just off the top of my head:

1) Trump had the most criminal administration ever.  His chief of staff pled guilty.  Independent DoJ prosecutions have not been dismissed by judges.  If they were politically motivated, the courts would have already dismissed them.  The man over there is lying.  He wants to be President so he can pardon himself from the crimes he committed against America and commit more crimes.

2)  From the proud boys to the 3 percenters... no one in modern history has appealed to the worst.  It takes him days to condemn white supremecist supporters.  He told the Proud Boys "stand back and stand by" and we saw how they reacted on January 6th when he asked them to storm the Capitol.  He has already promised the largest "mass deportation" in his next term.

3) Trump didn't just overturn Roe vs. Wade, his policies against women are being used across all states to harm women's reproductive health.  No surprise for a man who has been convicted by a court of sexual assault, who has bragged about grabbing women.  (Uses any story of a family that had to carry a nonviable pregnancy to term).

4)  Trump acts like he's for the poor.  He is going to bring more tax cuts to drive up the deficit.  My policies actually reduced poverty.

Well... maybe not a perfect description of Trump.

This Trump vs Biden convo still feels like it's happening in a bubble of a different perception then @Fergasun is talking to...

Trump has 91 indictments against him right now.  GOP is clearly planning to go down with that sinking ship, which means him on the ballot on Election Day even if he's sitting in jail.

There's no way to poll for this until he's convicted of something, imo.
