Representative Matt Gaetz's ex-girlfriend granted immunity in sex trafficking probe

Prosecutors granted immunity to an ex-girlfriend of Representative Matt Gaetz before she testified last week in front of a federal grand jury hearing evidence in the investigation of the congressman, according to a source familiar with the matter.

Gaetz has been under investigation to determine if he violated sex trafficking laws and obstructed justice in that probe. Gaetz has previously denied all wrongdoing, and has said he has never paid for sex nor had sex with an underage girl.

The woman, who CBS News is not naming to protect her privacy, testified in front of a federal grand jury in Orlando last Wednesday. She is viewed as a potential key witness, according to two sources familiar with the investigation. One of the sources said she has information related to the investigation of both the sex trafficking and obstruction allegations.

"This may be a willing participant who has a smart lawyer who sought an immunity deal from the government," said former prosecutor and CBS News legal analyst Rikki Kleiman. "The government does not give immunity blindly, they know what they're getting in exchange."

Watch Matt Gaetz, Unprompted, Start Screaming About Investigation into His Sexual Assault Charges

Matt Gaetz wants the public to believe that the possible charges (where are they!) against him, which seem to be bothering him a bit now that a “former girlfriend” has agreed to cooperate, having been given full immunity, are simply political, no different than the investigations into Trump.

Gaetz used an appearance on Steve Bannon’s show to fly into what can best be described as a tantrum, to argue that he is being treated like Trump was with the “Russian hoax.”

Gaetz went off, entirely unprompted:

Quote

“Using a cut-out seems like exactly what they were trying to do to me!

“We are going to take power and when we do, it’s not going to be the days of Paul Ryan and Trey Gowdy, where the Republicans go limp-wristed, where they lose their backbone and fail to send a single subpoena. No, it’s going to be the days of Jim Jordan and Matt Gaetz and Marjorie Taylor Greene.”

“There is a pattern that is consistent through the Russia hoax, through the Ukraine matter, through my matter, through Jan. 6,” he said. “And that is that you have these grey operators that are adjacent to the intelligence community.”

“They go an activate other people to seed a lie or engage in an activity that then gives the national security apparatus the authority to do something that they wouldn’t otherwise be able to do.”

“I’m starting to wonder whether or not what they tried to do to me was extortion or an operation. And more and more, it looks like an operation.”

I've said for years that the Republicans are using Goebbel's playbook for indoctrination tactics. They are also John Birchers, once reviled by Republicans. I remember my Republican parents talking about how different the John Birchers from Eisenhower.

Yeah, but Eisenhower was more like Hillary, politically.

Politifact:  Viral Meme Says the 1956 Republican Party platform supported equal pay, the minimum wage, asylum for refugees, protections for unions and more.

Florida man connected to Gaetz probe formally enters guilty plea

A Florida collectibles dealer connected to the federal investigation into Rep. Matt Gaetz formally entered a guilty plea in Orlando on Wednesday, marking another twist in the ongoing probe into the Republican congressman.

Joe Ellicott, known as “Big Joe,” pleaded guilty in federal court to conspiracy to commit fraud and drug charges and has agreed to cooperate with federal authorities. Ellicott is a relatively minor figure in the ongoing Gaetz probe but was listed on a federal grand jury subpoena in December 2020 along with Gaetz and several other men.

One of Ellicott’s attorneys, Joe Zwick, declined to comment Wednesday.

As part of his plea agreement, Ellicott, who remains free on pretrial conditions, has agreed to “cooperate fully with the United States in the investigation and prosecution of other people,” according to court documents. Ellicott’s attorney previously said those individuals include Gaetz, a close ally of former President Donald Trump.

How the hell long does it take to talk to this guy and get him to give his evidence?  Man, they work slowly.

Gaetz friend’s sentencing delayed again as he cooperates

A federal judge has agreed to delay the sentencing of a former Florida tax collector, whose arrest led to a probe of U.S. Rep. Matt Gaetz, so that he can continue cooperating with federal prosecutors.

Former Seminole County Tax Collector Joel Greenberg had been scheduled for sentencing next month, but U.S. District Judge Gregory Presnell said Monday in an order that postponing the sentencing “is in the interest of justice.”

The sentencing date had already been pushed back from last fall.

U.S. Attorney Roger Handberg said in court papers that prosecutors supported the postponement “because it would allow the United States to further advance aspects of pending investigations.”

"Why the Feds almost always get a conviction at trial"

Remember reading an article that said that the FBI has never in it's history been turned down for a wiretap warrant.  But it's not because the courts rubber stamp them.

Rather, it said that the Feds don't want to get turned down for wiretaps.  Because things like that can be used as arguments against other wiretaps, too.

Therefore, FBI agents are not allowed to ask for a wiretap, unless their application has been reviewed by the Bureau, first.  The Bureau reviews the application to see if the application will be granted.  And the Bureau's standards for asking for a warrant, are higher than the court's rules for  granting them.
