Washington Football Team defensive end Chase Young was selected as the Pro Football Writers of America's 2020 Defensive Rookie of the Year on Monday.

Young, the second overall selection in the 2020 NFL Draft out of Ohio State, played in 15 games (all starts) and led all NFL rookies with 7.5 sacks. He posted 44 total tackles (32 solo) and he added four passes defensed, 12 quarterback hits, four forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries and a fumble return for a touchdown. He had seven games with at least one full sack, the most by a rookie in Washington history.

Young also had three games with a sack and a fumble recovery, the most in a season by any player in franchise history. He was the second rookie in Washington history to post at least seven sacks and 10 tackles for loss (Brian Orakpo in 2009), and Young was the only NFL rookie in 2020 to reach those marks. His four forced fumbles tied for the most all-time by a Washington rookie, and he set a franchise rookie record with his three fumble recoveries, which helped him earn his first Pro Bowl.

Young was selected both NFC Defensive Player and NFL Defensive Rookie of the Month for December, and he was a PFWA All-NFC honoree – the only 2020 rookie to be selected to an all-conference squad. Young is the first Washington player to be selected Defensive Rookie of the Year by the PFWA.

Young is the third Ohio State player to be selected Defensive Rookie of the Year by the PFWA since 2017 and the fourth defensive lineman since 2015. He joins his former Buckeyes teammates and defensive ends Nick and Joey Bosa as recipients of the award.

The award is the latest accolade that Young has received for his rookie season. He was one of two Washington players named to Pro Football Focus' All-Rookie team, and his overall grade of 87.2, which led the entire team, was one of the highest among edge defenders in the past decade.

"I think the way he arrived on the scene -- serious about his work and fitting in with his teammates -- I think is exactly what you hope for," said defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio. "And then the biggest surprise, just something that I really didn't anticipate, is how much of a leader he is and how much of an inspiration he is. He loves football. He loves his teammates. All you have to do is watch him. Watch him during practice, watch him on game day. He loves ball. I think it's infectious."

Theoretically, if the picks are done correctly, in a perfect world, the 1st Defensive player taken, should end up being the DROY.

Young earned every bit of it though.

The unique thing about him is he is the rare combination of talent and effort.

He has all the talent you can think of, but usually players at that level can get a bit lazy and just live off their God-given talent. But Chase works and fights with about as much effort as a UDFA who just scratches and claws to make a team. Those guys have to work harder due to their lack of talent.

But Young is special because both his work-ethic and talent are both off the charts. And then there's his character

This was a strange year where defensive rookies by and large sucked. Their PFF ratings are so low compared to offensive guys. The lack of offseason preparation really hurt them. Young's grade was still high (87 ish IIRC) but the next highest are all guys in like the 70s. Meanwhile the highest rated offensive rookies are 90+.

A lot of those super highly rated offensive guys were RB's, and that's an easy position to step into.

And he is doing commercials too...

I guess he can't focus on just football anymore now that he got paid. Whens the rap album drop?  :ols:

It's a good thing he can play football, because he has no future as an actor.

Super cool that he's playing for his local team too. That's got to make a difference for some of these kids coming into the league.

You haven't made it as a DC athlete until you do an Eastern Motors ad.
