Jan. 6 riot caused $1.5 million in damage to Capitol — and U.S. prosecutors want defendants to pay

U.S. prosecutors this week put a price tag on damage to the U.S. Capitol from the Jan. 6 breach — $1.5 million so far — and for the first time are asking defendants to cover some of the bill in plea offers, prosecutors and defense lawyers said.

The U.S. attorney’s office in Washington cited the damage estimate Wednesday in court and in plea papers filed in the case of Paul Hodgkins, 38. The Tampa crane operator pleaded guilty to one felony count of obstructing an official proceeding of Congress and faces sentencing July 19 in Washington.

“Your client acknowledges that the riot that occurred on January 6, 2021, caused as of May 17, 2021, approximately $1,495,326.55 damage to the United States Capitol,” stated a plea agreement letter sent by Assistant U.S. Attorney Mona Sedky and signed by Hodgkins and his attorney in May.

The document said Hodgkins agreed to pay $2,000 restitution to the Treasury Department as part of the plea.

Several defense attorneys said prosecutors with the U.S. attorney’s office in Washington are seeking to require restitution of $2,000 in each felony case and $500 in each misdemeanor case.

I note once again none of this overwhelming evidence is followed by an arrest or even a warrant being issued.

What exactly does it take?

I think, from observing the TV views of that day, there were more than 550 people involved in rioting on the Capitol grounds and in the building.

I think one of the penalties should be permanent loss of their voting rights.

Kansas City, Missouri, man charged in connection to Capitol riot

Another Kansas City, Missouri, man has been charged in connection to the Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol, after telling FBI agents he climbed through a broken window to enter the building.

Carey Jon Walden was arrested May 28 for knowingly entering or remaining in any restricted building or grounds without lawful authority; disorderly or disruptive conduct at any place in the grounds or in any of the Capitol buildings; and parading, demonstrating, or picketing in any of the Capitol buildings.

“I took pictures and video. I did not break anything. The police were present and I was not asked to leave. I fist bumped and ‘Devil horned’ the swat line,” Walden wrote in an account of his participation in the riot, according to court documents.

He also wrote that he climbed through an “already broken” window into a 15 square-foot area, where police guarded a passageway. He wrote, according to court documents, that he walked outside after hearing someone had been shot. He said he was not armed.

While being interviewed by the FBI in February, Walden identified on an image of the Capitol where he believed he entered the building.

Walden, a Marine Corps veteran, also shared photos and videos “from his activities outside the US Capitol” with FBI investigators, court documents stated. And when shown photos from a Facebook page of “Carey Jon Walden” that stated, “I had just climbed the west wall (sic) lol,” he confirmed that he had taken the photo.

One witness told investigators that Walden was his direct supervisor in the Marines and that Walden posted several later-deleted Facebook Live videos, some of which included Walden “climbing the walls and entering the Capitol,” according to court documents.

‘Zip-Tie Guy’ and His Mother Now Face More Than Twice as Many Charges in Capitol Siege Case, Including for Bringing a Taser to Congress

Federal prosecutors more than doubled the charges against so-called “Zip-Tie Guy” Eric Munchel and his mother Lisa Marie Eisenhart in a superseding indictment filed on Wednesday, charging them with eight counts, including carrying a deadly or dangerous weapon into the U.S. Capitol.

That weapon was a Taser, prosecutors say.

Spotted jumping around the Senate chamber in military gear, Munchel got his nickname after wire photographs captured him carrying tactical restraints inside Congress. Munchel claimed to have picked up the plastic handcuffs that Capitol police left behind, but he was not the only person to have done so. Prosecutors have noted that they theoretically could have been used for taking hostages, though they have not specifically alleged that there was such a plot.

I think you should sue him. And hire a process server.

Edit:

Charge him with encouraging someone to commit a break in.

Between this, MTG putting "June 31st" on her Congressional letter to Biden, and the Trump campaign putting "September 31st" on their fundraising email, I'm wondering how this segment of the GOP manages to brush their teeth every morning without poking out an eye.

They strike me as kind of people who consider brushing their teeth every morning to be a "suggestion" and not necessarily a rule worth living by.

If they did poke their own eyes out brushing their teeth, you can be certain there would be conspiracy theories about the ADA and how it's really a dark partnership between dentists and eye surgeons to profit off the working man.

Oregon Republicans call for Mike Nearman to resign, and threaten to expel him if he doesn't.   But when is Mike Nearman going to be arrested on conspiracy charges?

Republicans call on Oregon Rep. Mike Nearman to resign, as possible House expulsion looms - OPB

Edit:  From the end of that article:

Nearman has already faced some consequences for his actions. He has been charged with two misdemeanors stemming from the incident, and has been stripped of all of his legislative committee assignments. In addition, he has forfeited his badge granting Capitol access and must give 24 hours notice before coming to the building.

My neighbor asked me if Jan 6th was an insurrection. I said yes. He then told me to **** off. 😆 Dude waltzed in my warehouse thinking he could spew his conservative bs. It was hysterical. All the typical Trump bull**** right down to calling me a libtard and dismissing facts as fake news.

Basically in his view Jan 6th wasn't an insurrection because there were no "tanks or planes" involved. 🤪

Tell him if he doesn't like the term insurrection you'll call it an infantile mass temper tantrum by ignorant assholes whose candidate didn't win and then acted on the word of a pathological liar to the exclusion of any other credible information sources.  Then tell him to **** off.

Are you ****ing kidding me?

Senate report reveals new details about security failures ahead of January 6 attack but omits Trump's role

Quote

There are also several glaring omissions in the report including any examination of Donald Trump's role in the riots, raising questions about whether lawmakers, in their quest for bipartisanship, exposed the limits of a Congress divided and unable to agree on certain truths, particularly those related to the former President's actions.

Sources tell CNN that in order for this report, which was compiled by the Senate Homeland Security and Rules committees, to have support from both parties, the language had to be carefully crafted, and that included excluding the word "insurrection," which notably does not appear outside of witness quotes and footnotes.

"Did we look at Trump's role in the attack? The answer is no," a Senate committee aide told reporters.

Republicans: "We're going to scream and yell and call you dumbface smelly socialists unless you do what we say!!!"

Democrats:

Its depressing knowing that the dems cant bring themselves to do anything with the support they get knowing whats going to happen on the other side. Why does evil always have to be so much better at getting things done?
