Juror refuses mask, jailed in virus outbreak

Phillip Dupaul says he thinks the "COVID scare" is exaggerated. But he was pretty unnerved on Monday when the other inmates in his holding cell at the Cascade County Detention Center began laughing, loudly, at the irony when he told them a judge threw him in jail for not wearing a mask. The inmates told him they had all been exposed to one inmate who had the virus. Hours later, Cascade County Sheriff Jesse Slaughter would announce a 55-person outbreak at the jail.

Dupaul, 60, refused to wear a mask when he arrived at a Great Falls motel conference center for jury duty on Monday and was ordered to jail. At the same time Dupaul was being booked into the facility, county law enforcement was learning the extent of the outbreak — the worst of any detention center in the state. Cascade County Sheriff Jesse Slaughter on Friday issued a press release criticizing the judge for ordering Dupaul to jail while the facility was suffering an outbreak, but did not mention in the statement that jail officials placed Dupaul in general population, rather than in isolation.

Apparently idiocracy regarding coronavirus is not limited to the US:

Berlin braces for 'anti-coronavirus' rally after court ruling

A protest against coronavirus restrictions is set to take place in the German capital on Saturday, after an administrative court in Berlin overturned a ban on the demonstration.

A court spokesman said on Friday that the protest, which is expected to draw over 22,500 people, will be allowed to go ahead under certain conditions.

Shortly after the decision, Berlin police appealed at the city's Higher Administrative Court for review. In the night to Saturday, that court ruled the demonstrations could go ahead.

Some protesters had been calling for demonstrators to travel to Berlin over the weekend, regardless of whether the demonstrations were permitted.

In its decision, the court said the protest organizers had taken "sufficient precautions" for Saturday's demonstration, including providing one hundred de-escalation teams.

The court added that there was no evidence in the organizer's demonstration application that would suggest that they would "deliberately disregard" social distancing requirements.

The judges further criticized city administrators for not sufficiently examining alternatives to banning the event, such as limiting the number of participants or changing the location.

Still, the judges said protest organizers and participants must provide barriers in front of the stages where speeches will be held — and must regularly remind participants to observe social distancing rules and keep their distance.

Wearing masks was not included in the judge's guidelines for the protest.

understand that any mod would be valid in calling this a drive-by troll, if a mild one imo, and too mild for me to go ahead and ban you for it, but your recent past complicates the call

two mods have flagged you for trolling in the last couple months, and as your posts evidence in their content, you don't seem to embrace what i'd call "learning" or "reality" with aplomb....but i am warning you that any future rule violation will likely result in a permaban so make sure you know and follow the rules...this acct's been active since 2002, so you've had time to learn them

to give you one more act of charity, don't reply to this post in the thread here (reasons are in the rules)..i expect you would normally reply in challenge or defense and doing so in the thread would be a violation (read those rules)

As someone who used to work in the biopharmaceutical industry and is familiar with how Fast Track designation works I don't like the way the Trump administration is interfering in how the FDA handles drug/vaccine approvals.  Not sure I believe  Dr. Hahn when he says political pressure won't be a factor.

FDA commissioner says willing to fast-track COVID-19 vaccine: FT

The head of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is willing to fast-track a COVID-19 vaccine as quickly as possible, the Financial Times reported him as saying in an interview published on Sunday.

Dr. Stephen Hahn, the FDA Commissioner, said his agency was prepared to authorize a vaccine before Phase Three clinical trials were complete, as long as officials are convinced that the benefits outweigh the risks, the newspaper reported on.ft.com/3b8Uq8I.

Without providing evidence, U.S. President Donald Trump last Saturday accused members of a so-called “deep state” working within the FDA of complicating efforts to test COVID-19 vaccines in order to delay results until after the Nov. 3 presidential election.

A day later, the FDA gave “emergency use authorization” of a coronavirus treatment that uses blood plasma from recovered patients.

“Our emergency use authorization is not the same as a full approval,” Hahn told the FT, adding that his decisions will not be made because of political pressure.

“This is going to be a science, medicine, data decision. This is not going to be a political decision,” Hahn said, according to the report.

U.S. tops 6 million coronavirus cases as nation continues to struggle with pandemic

The country has recorded more than 183,000 deaths due to the virus since the outbreak began early this year.

The U.S. has surpassed 6 million coronavirus cases as the country struggles to reopen schools and rebuild its economy as the pandemic rages with no end in sight.

The number of coronavirus cases topped 6 million Sunday, according to NBC News data collected from health departments nationwide. The country has recorded more than 183,000 deaths due to the virus since the outbreak gained global attention in February.

Although case numbers have continued to rise in waves, many states have chosen to reopen their economies and schools. Universities and colleges that board students have particularly struggled to keep cases under control as young adults move back to campuses and nearby residences to begin in-person courses.

The University of Alabama reported that more than 550 people — the majority of them students — have tested positive for the coronavirus since classes began just over a week ago. The University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill and the University of Notre Dame converted to virtual learning after influxes of new cases within a few weeks of the return of students.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued new guidance saying healthy people who have been exposed to COVID-19 "do not necessarily need a test" as long as they don't have symptoms. Previously, guidance suggested testing for all close contacts of infected people because asymptomatic carriers could still spread the virus.

A spokesperson for National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease, led Dr. Anthony Fauci, said Fauci had some concerns about the new guidance.

The CDC's director, Dr. Robert Redfield, walked back the guidance Thursday, saying "all close contacts of confirmed or probable COVID-19 patients" may consider testing.
