Kinda makes the chatter about him not liking philly look like nonsense

Either that or Harper and Boras had to give in on the opt outs to raise the overall value of the contract.  They wanted to beat Stanton's record.

Lot of money invested in his age 35-39 seasons.

Deal was described as front-loaded. Suspect he'll be prime tradebait by the time he's 30-32 depending on how the Phillies are doing. Still in his prime, with a reasonable remaining salary. This was a good deal for the Phillies assuming he doesn't get hurt.

By then $25M will be like $15M. It is a DUMB contract for a player that is 26. He won't hit the open market again. Boras should never sign another player.  Why not sign a 5 year/$170-175M contract and hit UFA at 31? Stupid.

I'm reading a full no trade clause.   Of course Harper could always waive it, but then again he might not.

Absolutely agree. This was a steal for the Phillies. They are paying him a bunch the next couple years when their commitments are low, and they are going to have control of him for years in his prime at reasonable AAV amounts.

Yeah just saw that too. Still a really good deal for the Phillies especially if they front-loaded the contract.

Because if he declines, then he would have left $160 million on the table.

Yeah.  I mean he would hit FA again at 31 and would have to make 160 over 8 more years to come out even.  Also, with a 5 year contract during his absolute prime, he may have been able to up the AAV past 34-35 mil.  13 for 330 with no opt out seems like a pretty bad contract designed solely to beat Stanton's record imo.

If Harper can maintain production.   Otherwise that contract could end up being an albatross in a few years.

He needs to do better than maintain production. His recent WAR, batting average and declining defense at $25m per year is not a steal by any means.

Rendon needs to be re-signed today, there's no reason to wait now that Harper is officially gone.

Yes, they cannot play around with that one. Get it done asap

We had a megastar and let him walk out the doold to our rivals. This is hard to swallow.

My faith is in rizzo, and the fact that I don't think the clubhouse will be broken up about him leaving

It's dumb if he ends up being a hall of famer.  If any outcome other than that happens (injury, decline, inconsistency before a contract year), it's smart for Harper.

Basically, he took a ****ton of guaranteed money.
