The airline experience has become miserable

Good god. Even a language barrier shouldn't lead to this.

“Emergency” landing in Bilbao to let passengers go to the toilets

A plane from Gran Canaria to the UK has to make an unscheduled stopover in Bilbao so that the passengers can go to the bathroom. About 200 people were flying on the aircraft. They had to stop for about an hour.

Jet2 flight LS782 operated by Airbus A321 G-HLYB left Gran Canaria bound for the British city of Manchester but halfway through they made an unexpected stop. Fortunately, it was not because of any sick passengers nor had there been an altercation on board, but only so that the passengers could relieve themselves by putting an end to their digestive process.

The toilets of the plane suffered a breakdown and due to the long duration of the flight – more than 4 hours and a half of travel – they had to stop in the Basque Country before entering the Bay of Biscay to cross France and fly to the British city.

At first, the air traffic controllers were unaware of the reason for this stop until they were notified once the plane was on the ground.

At this stopover, all 200 passengers got off the plane, stretched their legs and went to the bathroom.

Man accused of holding razor blade near woman's neck on flight

A Utah man is facing charges after allegedly bringing a straight edge razor blade on a flight and holding it near a passenger's throat.

The incident comes just weeks after a man brought two box cutters through security and onto a Frontier Airlines flight en route to Tampa.

Merrill Darrell Fackrell, 41, allegedly boarded a JetBlue flight Monday at JFK Airport in New York en route to Salt Lake City. During the flight, Fackrell was in the window seat next to a woman, when he allegedly placed his hand in front of her screen and told her to pause her movie, according to a release from the U.S. Attorney's Office, District of Utah. The woman then realized Fackrell was holding what appeared to her as a knife, "inches from her skin at her throat/neck area," the release said.

The woman's husband then went to the front of the plane to get assistance from a flight attendant. The woman lunged for the aisle to escape and Fackrell reached and tried to stop her by grabbing her shoulder, according to the release.

The object was secured and later identified as a wood-handled straight edge razor with a one-to-two-inch blade.

In a statement to ABC News, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) said it "take[s] our responsibility to secure the skies for the traveling public very seriously." The agency said it's introducing new X-ray technology at more airports to improve the capability to detect items such as the one used in this incident.

Have been sitting on a plane, on the tarmac, for over 2hr after a maintenance delay. 1.5hr of that they were trying to find the maintenance guy, who apparently was not on-site despite planes departing this morning. It turned out to be a 10min fix once he finally arrived. Regional airport life. ❤️

Woman bites passenger, tries to open door on Southwest flight from Texas, feds say

A woman bit another passenger after trying to open an exit door during a Southwest Airlines flight from Texas to Ohio, federal officials said.

Southwest Flight 192 departed from Houston to Columbus on Saturday, Nov. 26, an FBI special agent said in the criminal complaint.

But the flight wasn’t able to make it to its destination initially.

A 34-year-old woman on board shoved a flight attendant while trying to get to an exit door, the complaint says.

After flight attendants restrained the woman, she asked them if she could look out a window. When she was told no, she lunged at the exit door and tried to pull the handle, the complaint says.

Another person on the flight wrestled her to the ground, and the woman bit them on their right thigh, the complaint says.

She told the passenger “Jesus told her to open the plane door,” the complaint says.

Florida man, 76, pleads guilty to lewd act, touching woman on flight

A 76-year-old Florida man accused of performing lewd acts and touching a 21-year-old woman’s leg without her consent on a Boston-bound flight earlier this year has pleaded guilty.

Federal prosecutors in Boston said Tuesday that Donald Edward Robinson, 76, of Bonita Springs, faces up to 90 days in prison at sentencing scheduled for March.

Prosecutors said Robinson and the victim were on a flight from New Jersey to Boston on April 8 when the defendant exposed himself, inappropriately touched himself and put his hand on the thigh of the 21-year-old woman seated next to him.

Chris Christie's niece kicked off New Orleans plane, injured 6 deputies, officials say

After getting forced off an airplane for asking passengers who appeared to her to be Latino whether they were drug mules, a niece of former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie bit, kicked and spit on Jefferson Parish sheriff's deputies trying to detain her on Thanksgiving Day at Louis Armstrong International Airport, authorities said.

Shannon Epstein, 25, boarded the Spirit Airlines flight to New Jersey on Nov. 24 at about 6 a.m., and asked a family who were near her and whom she perceived to be Latino if they were "smuggling cocaine," said Capt. Jason Rivarde, a Sheriff's Office spokesperson. Airline workers requested Epstein be removed from the plane as she became increasingly irate, and the plane, which had started to taxi to the runway, returned to the gate, Rivarde said Friday.

When deputies arrived, Epstein refused to exit the jet bridge into the terminal, Rivarde said. When they tried to arrest her, she became "extremely combative," Rivarde said.

In the scuffle, she injured six deputies, biting one of the arm and breaking the skin, and kicking another in the groin, Rivarde said. They were treated there by paramedics.

All the while, Epstein shouted that the deputies were going to lose their jobs or end up in jail, boasting that she was related to powerful people and that her uncle is a friend of former President Donald Trump, Rivarde said.

No more airplane mode? EU to allow calls on flights

Airline passengers in the European Union (EU) will soon be able to use their phones to full effect in the sky.

The European Commission ruled airlines can provide 5G technology on board planes, alongside slower mobile data.

This could mean flyers will no longer be required to put their phone on airplane mode - though the specifics of how it will be implemented are unclear.

The deadline for member states to make the 5G frequency bands available for planes is 30 June 2023.

This will mean people can use all their phone's features mid-flight - enabling calls as well as data-heavy apps that stream music and video.

The EU Commission has reserved certain frequency bands for aircraft since 2008, allowing some services to offer mid-air internet access.

But this service has been historically slow, as it relied on equipment to connect people via a satellite between the aeroplane and the ground.

The new system will be able to take advantage of the much faster download speeds provided by 5G, which according to mobile network EE can be over 100Mbps - enabling a film to be downloaded in just a few minutes.

Orlando Airport could run out of fuel Sunday night. Here's what travelers should know.

The Federal Aviation Administration is warning pilots that Orlando International Airport (MCO) is running low on fuel, and that could mean hiccups in the days ahead for travelers.

In an official notice, the agency said that the airport could continue having supply issues through about 7 p.m. Tuesday, and suggests that airlines should be prepared to operate flights into the airport with enough fuel on board to fly back out.

Some carriers are already making adjustments to their operations as a result, and at least one has issued a waiver for travelers heading to or from Orlando.

Here's what passengers need to know.

In a statement posted to Twitter Sunday morning, Orlando International Airport said the supply issue was the result of weather along the Gulf Coast that prevented ships from transporting fuel for delivery.

Seems odd to me, never in the history of the airport has there been bad weather on the Gulf Coast?  There's got to be more to it than that.

Four consecutive Delta trips now with flight delays. Two maintenance related, two because their pilots didn’t make it to the airport on time. Two missed connections, one resulting in getting bumped to a red eye and spending 12hr in an airport.

Really enjoying the experience.

As I mentioned in the Winter Weather thread, my daughter had her flight on the 22nd canceled, then had her flight on the 23rd canceled.  She couldn't get a flight on the 24th due to all the cancellations so had to get another longer layover flight today, which thankfully wasn't canceled but did have a delay.  So we can empathize with these people:

More Than 3,000 Flights Canceled on Christmas Morning

It's a blue Christmas for some travelers this year, as airlines already canceled more than 3,000 flights and delayed over 9,600 others before noon Eastern Time on Sunday. A combination of severe winter weather and continuing staffing shortages has contributed to the problem.

On Christmas Eve, airlines around the world nixed 5,775 trips and delayed nearly 19,000 more, according to the watchdog site FlightAware. Of that total, some 3,488 canceled flights were into, within or out of the US.

These figures are well above last year's, according to data from the Bureau of Transportation Statistics: In December 2021, roughly 420 flights a day were canceled on average and only about 3,800 delayed.

Thanks in large part to Winter Storm Elliott, Southwest Airlines ranked the worst of US-based airlines for on-time departures on Sunday morning, with 471 cancellations (about 12% of its entire schedule) and 1,112 delays (30%).

Eh, I've only ever had one bad experience with Southwest and I've flown with them like 10x more than the next closest airline, United, which I've had issues like 50% of the time I fly with them.  It was in like 2017 when their computer system just completely crashed for the entire day, which happened to be the day I was flying to San Diego.  Aside from that though, they've always been the easiest airline for me to fly with.
