We live in a world where that is a reasonable question.

My response to that is people don't join the military because of the low conviction rate in regards to rape and wanting to be in an environment ripe for the picking.  It's not enforced well enough or treated with the level of severity it deserves, so it happens more then say a public school or a burger king.  You rape Molly the cashier in the walk in fridge, you won't get as far as some of these folks who we worship with or still call heroes.

I'm sorry if I offended any military members bringing that up, but in all seriousness, if you are in the military and out here raping people, you are no hero to me.

Ya, I can't with a straight face type that I believe people join the church because its such a target rich environment.  We've sunk low as a species, but I don't know if we've sunk that low (maybe an exception here and there, but not the rule)

It’s not untrue. Even to this day there are seminaries in the US known for being a “gay seminary”. I’m NOT equating homosexuality with pedophilia.  Saying that historically it was/is a refuge-men were conflicted about their feelings and they are counseled that celibacy was the answer-just like a straight priest takes a vow of celibacy from women.

Not disputing that, more need a minute and more facts to absorb the idea of men joining the clergy specifically so it would be easier to get to little boys without repercussion and how many of the men caught doing this that was their main reason for joining the church.

I don't think that's the same as saying we know there are seminaries known for being prominently gay (church should allow gays to be priests if they want to and women as well).  Joining to try to get right and joining specifically to do wrong is not the same thing, even if they both happen.

What other logical reasons are there for the amount that this happens in these churches vs. others?

I’m not saying there aren’t any.  It just makes sense that folks with this type of ‘disease’ would seek opportunities to prey.

It's why they choose  many professions that expose them to kids, and put them in a position of trust/leadership, coincidentally also the same professions that are more likely to cover it up (really that could be all institutions, but the same ones keep making the same mistakes).

These people aren't stupid. They exploit all of these cultural blind spots

Didn't feel like making another thread for it. Jesus, I hate how people twist religion into something so horrible.

I wonder how many churches are ran like a quasi-kingdom/mafia family that destroy people and abuse the **** out of female women and children. I'd like to see a task force created to handle all the abuse and fraud that occurs under the guise of religion.

My Wife had to deal with **** like this growing up around Baptists in Georgia.

Court: Probe found over 300 'predator priests' in 6 dioceses

HARRISBURG, Pa. — A landmark grand jury report identifies more than 300 "predator priests" in six of Pennsylvania's Roman Catholic dioceses, the state Supreme Court said Friday in ordering the findings released. (Tap here to read the court ruling.)

The justices said the report on clergy child sexual abuse going back decades and allegations of cover-up efforts will be made public but without the names or "individual specific information" of priests and others who have challenged the findings, at least in the initial version to be released.

The court wants the redaction process to be completed by Aug. 8, when the 900-page report is expected to be made public. If there are disputes about what a court-appointed special master should black out, the report will go out the following week.

The Supreme Court said it will consider the challenges by some priests and others who say their constitutional rights to their reputations and to due process of law are being violated, based on not being able to address the grand jury.

I know many good baptists and presbyterians from the Georgia region who would never consider being like this. I've also seen some churches that are run like a fiefdom. Absolute power corrupts. Its why I'm so glad my church has a plurality of elders where the lay elders (me) are equal to the paid pastors. Although then you have members trying to get you fired for discontinuing their sacred cow err... ministry program because it wasn't effective. But by far, the majority are sheep, not wolves. And for that I am thankful to God.

Harrisburg Diocese identifies 71 alleged sex abusers, cites failure of bishops

HARRISBURG, Pa. — The Roman Catholic diocese of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, has put out a list of 71 priests and others in the church accused of sexually abusing children in cases going back decades. Bishop Ron Gainer issued a public apology Wednesday for the abuse and said the church's bishops shared the blame, having responded inadequately to all the allegations.

As a result, the name of every bishop since 1947 will be removed from church facilities in the diocese.

The Harrisburg Diocese issued its findings just days after the state Supreme Court said a nearly 900-page grand jury report on sex abuse in six dioceses, including Harrisburg, can be made public later this month.

Some named in child sex abuse report will stay in ministry: Pittsburgh diocese

PITTSBURGH (AP) -- The bishop of Pittsburgh's Roman Catholic diocese said a few priests named in a soon-to-be-released grand jury report on clergy sex abuse are still in ministry because the diocese determined allegations against them were unsubstantiated.

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported that Bishop David Zubik reiterated to reporters Friday that "there is no priest or deacon in an assignment today against whom there was a substantiated allegation of child sexual abuse."

Zubik said after the report's release he would meet with parishioners whose priests may have been named in it to explain why the diocese's own review did not substantiate any allegations.

Last Sunday I watched the movie Spotlight just on a whim and the very next day while taking my kid to daycare I was listening to my local NPR station and heard the abuse was still going on. I guess being exposed over a decade ago really hasn't changed anything.
