Head of State Police Calls Response to Uvalde Shooting an ‘Abject Failure’ https://nyti.ms/3N4R9bL

Quote

AUSTIN, Texas — The head of the Texas State Police offered a pointed and emphatic rebuke of the police response to a shooting last month at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, calling it “an abject failure” that ran counter to decades of training.

In his comments before a special State Senate committee in Austin, Steven McCraw, the director of the Department of Public Safety, said that just minutes after a gunman began shooting children inside a pair of connected classrooms on May 24, the police at the scene had enough firepower and protective equipment to storm the classroom.

But, he said, the on-scene commander “decided to put the lives of officers ahead of the lives of children.” Mr. McCraw, speaking forcefully, said the same commander had delayed confronting the gunman because he “waited for a key that was never needed.”

All the bad **** aside, this was the right step by police on the scene.  No way should a person with a loved one inside be involved in any operations there.

I mean, since the alternative was that NOBODY was involved in any operations there for over an hour, I think this might have been an OK just to get somebody ****ing involved.

Translation: As the old saying goes, "It ain't no fun when the rabbit's got a gun" and we just ain't 'bout dat life. So hit us up when we can go all Rambo and shoot up some unarmed people.

State Senator Gutierrez sues Texas DPS for Uvalde shooting records

The Texas State Senator representing the district that includes Uvalde filed a lawsuit against the Texas Department of Safety on June 22, 2022, accusing the agency of unlawfully denying an open records request.

Sen. Roland Gutierrez, a Democrat who represents District 19, said he first sent the open records request to DPS on May 31, 2022 asking for "several categories of information." District 19 includes parts of San Antonio, Del Rio, Eagle Pass, Uvalde, and Universal City.

He said the agency did not properly handle his request for documents related to the May 24 shooting at Robb Elementary that left 19 students and two teachers dead. Sen. Gutierrez has previously called for Texas DPS to be more transparent in its investigation.

Uvalde schools police chief put on administrative leave

Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District police chief Pete Arredondo has been placed on administrative leave effective immediately, said Hal Harrell, superintendent of Uvalde CISD.

The big picture: Arredondo and other Texas law officials have faced criticism over why it took so long for officers to stop the Robb Elementary School shooter, who killed 19 children and two teachers.

Driving the news: Harrell said in a statement he originally planned to wait to make any personnel decisions until after the investigation into the Uvalde shooting was complete.

But Arredondo was put on leave due to "the lack of clarity that remains" in the investigation and the "unknown timing of when I will receive the results of the investigations," Harrell said.

Greg Abbott Sued for Claiming He Had Zero Contact With NRA After Uvalde

A legal watchdog group has filed a lawsuit in Texas accusing the state’s governor, Greg Abbott, and its embattled attorney general, Ken Paxton, of trying to conceal records of any discussions their offices may have had with gun advocacy groups, including the National Rifle Association, in the wake of Uvalde shooting.

The suit, filed in a Texas district court on Thursday by the nonprofit American Oversight, claims that both officials responded to an open records request pursuing details of their interactions with gun lobbyists in a manner too implausible to be believed. Both the Office of the Governor and the Office of the Attorney General claim that no such records exist, that there are no interactions to speak of.

In a complaint, American Oversight says the claim that neither offices had any contact with gun groups after the shooting is “not credible.”

“Governor Abbott and Attorney General Paxton have repeatedly withheld records in contravention of Texas law by claiming attorney-client privilege protects an overly broad swath of records,” said Melanie Sloan, senior advisor at American Oversight. The group’s lawsuit was filed, in part, Sloan said, to discover whether Abbot and Paxton are using personal phones and email accounts in an effort to evade transparency.

The group’s gun lobby requests are thorough, covering any contact between the day of the shooting, Tuesday, May 24, and the end of the following week, Friday, June 3. The requests cover communications to and from both officials, their chiefs of staff and deputies, as well as other staff charged with managing the two leaders’ schedules and interactions with the press.

The Gatling gun comment is a direct lift of a stupid internet “FWD: FWD: FWD:” about some guy in the 1700s who built a similar firearm but never manufactured/sold it at any scale. So we are to assume the founding fathers knew all about it and had that in mind when they wrote the second amendment.

Anywho, you can buy a Gatling gun and you don’t have to register it with anyone because it is a historic artifact. No one wants to take your Gatling gun away. We are talking about restricting the sale of modern military grade equipment.

Its also perfectly legal to own a cannon and  I haven’t heard anyone talking about restrictions on cannon transactions.

Now that I think about it, know your history, does this **** even watch pawnstars?!

After Uvalde shooting, Texas leaders will spend more than $100 million on school safety, mental health

Texas leaders announced Tuesday that they have agreed to dedicate more than $100 million in state funds to boost school safety and mental health services following the Uvalde massacre.

Nearly half the money — $50 million — is going toward bullet-resistant shields for school police officers, a priority of Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick. The second-largest expenditure — $17.1 million — is for school districts to buy silent panic alert technology, which allows them to alert law enforcement during emergencies.

The $105.5 million total in funding will support the initiatives through August 2023. Almost all of the money is coming out of a budget surplus inside the Texas Education Agency, which oversees public K-12 education.
