Just an observation from my son's friends (18+19 year old guys): given that young "conservative" men aren't terribly desirable, and given that its okay to be a gay man, the pool of available young reasonable men is actually relatively smaller than the associated pool of interested young women.  The number of his friends I've seen being terribly picky about the women they are dating is pretty hilarious given how things were when I was his age.  He has one friend that dates frequently and, if my sons description is to be believed, he has pretty much never asked a girl out in his life.
