The immigration thread: American Melting Pot or Get off my Lawn

The whole thing about laptops on middle eastern airlines reeks of US airline lobbyists.  Delta's had an ongoing feud with Emirates and has actively tried to box them out of US-UAE routes.  Their contention is that the playing field isn't even- Delta is a private company, whereas Emirates is a semi-private state run airline.  Emirates can run at massive losses with no implications.  Delta is actually right on that point but this is a terrible way to go about pushing them out.

This prohibition on devices only makes sense if there is a belief that certain airports lack adequate security on personal baggage? Hold baggage is OK, but the concern is something carried on board If it's specific airlines rather than locations then that's harder to understand.

Spicer said something about ICE, and listing online crimes committed by illegals in his press statement.

(didn't get all of what he said)

He was saying that the ICE website has uploaded a data base of crimes committed by illegal aliens and made it publicly accessible. Something sinister like that. Im not sure about the details.

I clicked on the article and the article does not mention anything about Trump increasing the terror threat on ME-US flights.

After reading it, it kinda pushed me towards supporting the ban. Just wish there was some way the common person was not inconvenienced by the US trying to make the playing field fair for US airliners. But having Emirates etc being subsidized by their countries is much like what we complain of China doing as well.

I have no idea if this is what the electronics device thing is about but recently saw this as a method of fire starting (apparently works even if battery discharged).  Good part at 1:20.  I imagine larger batteries can pack more of a punch/ output more noxious gas.

But hey, Philly is majority Dem so its ok, right?

Probably offset by the reduced food stamps and such.

The store owners who accept them certainly do.  And the taxes they pay on the income will probably bite into that offset some, no?

Chicago family fighting to stop deportation of veteran
  •

A lawyer is fighting to keep a U.S. Army veteran who served two tours of duty in Afghanistan from being deported to Mexico.

Army Private First Class Miguel Perez, Jr., 38, says he has been fighting deportation for roughly five years after mistakenly believing his service in the military made him a U.S. citizen by default. Perez, who was born in Mexico and moved to Chicago when he was 8, first came to the attention of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) while serving a prison sentence after pleading guilty to selling cocaine in 2008, according to his attorney, Christopher Bergin.

Bergin has filed a motion to appeal the judge's ruling, buying about a month of time for his client, who is currently in the custody of ICE, before the appeal is reviewed, he said.

In July 2002, President George W. Bush signed an executive order clearing the way for noncitizens who had served in the Armed Forces on or after Sept. 11, 2001, to immediately file for expedited citizenship. Perez's mother, Esperanza Medina, told ABC News her son never formally filed for citizenship because he misunderstood the rules.

"[The decision] is not fair to us because my son fought for this country," Medina, 60, who became a U.S. citizen in 2005, said of the judge's ruling. "He has a nation and it's the USA."..........

..........Bergin and Perez's family attribute his conviction to a period when Perez was self-medicating for pain related to his time in the service, they said.

Bergin added that Perez "was blown out of his Jeep in Kandahar," and that he suffered a traumatic brain injury (TBI) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) as a result of the blast. Perez told The Chicago Tribune last month that grenade and roadside bomb explosions during his tours led him to lose much of his hearing and suffer headaches.

Donald Trump, Jr., Criticizes London Mayor After Deadly Attack

Quote

“You have to be kidding me?!” Mr. Trump tweeted on Wednesday afternoon, as details of the attack — which left at least four dead and 20 injured — and its toll continued to unfold. “Terror attacks are part of living in big city, says London Mayor Sadiq Khan.”

Mr. Trump, the oldest son of President Trump, used his tweet to call attention to an article from last September in The Independent, a British newspaper, that described Mr. Khan’s reaction to the bombing in New York City’s Chelsea neighborhood.

Mr. Trump badly mischaracterized the London mayor’s remarks. Mr. Khan did not describe terrorism as “part of living in a big city,” as if bombings and shootings were an inescapable fact of life. He said that terrorism preparedness, including providing sufficient support to the police, was “part and parcel of living in a great global city.”

“That means being vigilant, having a police force that is in touch with communities; it means the security services being ready, but it also means exchanging ideas and best practice,” Mr. Khan said in a video interview published by The Evening Standard, another British paper. (For the record, Mr. Khan did say the victims of the Chelsea bombing were in his “thoughts and prayers.”)

“Nothing is more important to me than keeping Londoners safe,” Mr. Khan added. “I want to be reassured that every single agency and individual involved in protecting our city has the resources and expertise they need to respond in the event that London is attacked.”

Mr. Trump’s tweet was not well received by Britons, who were still learning details of the attack when the son of the president of the United States decided to weigh in. On Twitter, Wes Streeting, a member of Parliament from the Labour Party, accused Mr. Trump of capitalizing on the attack in London and called him “a disgrace.”

Ciaran Jenkins, a correspondent for Britain’s Channel 4, asked Mr. Trump on Twitter if he thought his remarks were “helpful.”

“Did you even read the article before goading London’s Mayor during a live incident?” he wrote on Twitter. He added, “Headline is based on very first sentence, which if you’d bothered to read it could apply to any major city in the world. Key word: ‘threat.’ ”

Meeting with his family and friends at his business, Eddie’s Steak Shed, in the town of Granger, I am struck by many things: the tenderness of his wife’s love for him, the innocence of his four American children (especially the teenage daughters who are now being taunted at school over his case), the loyalty of his 20 employees, and the pride and affection of his gathered friends and acquaintances as they rally to show their support.

But most striking of all is how many of the people now sticking up for Roberto are politically conservative. These are small-town Indiana residents, veterans and grandparents who come to his restaurant after Mass or Rotary. They vigorously defend him as a man they are proud to call a friend. And the more I think about it, the more clearly it is consistent with their conservative values that they stand up for Roberto.
