Failure to grow talent, failure to hire a legitimate coach, and not a retread who was fired for a reason, and failure to prepare for a world where Donovan and or Dempsey can't come to the rescue. U.S. Soccer should be gutted from the top and the program should be revamped - since you have four years to prepare for 2022, might as well start now because keeping the status quo will have us looking at 2026. I'll still watch World Cup. Pulisic just lost a few million over the next year. That could translate to to 8 or more figures over the next 5. We'll never know if Klinsmann would have qualified. Didn't look good. His philosophy has born out to be the correct one. US soccer will be blown up. No choice. The Robert Green Bobble, Donovan's late winner against Algeria, taking Portugal to the limit for a draw, Keeping it close with Belgium in the knockout round, playing Mexico (who we psychologically know we can play with) in the first rounds and getting to the QF and barely losing to Germany—these moments allowed us to gloss over the quality of our players. Pure and simple, until Pulisic, we didn't have a player who could be a legit starter on a top club. We don't have a legit player, much less playerS, who could reasonably start with any WC semifinalist in recent memory. It's about the quality of the players. With that said, the future MAY NOT be as bleak as Twellman's rant puts it. We have more young players in european academies/U- teams than ever before; Chelsea, PSG, Barca to name a few. The MLS clubs have established their own academies and cover 100% of the cost of training and play (in most cases)—so it's no longer pay to play. Columbus Crew, for example, recruited away the head of Valencia's academy to become the director of Crew Academy. At least 3 MLS clubs have a residential setup for their academy. None of this existed ten years ago. But Coaching Education, IMO, is still a joke in the US. it's too inaccessible and the content is too narrow. Now, it could be that that's similar to how Germany and Belgium did it: "This is what we want you to teach and this is how you teach it (to the various age groups). USSF is ineffective as a federation, probably not in the way most people perceive. Sunil has limited power. There are voting blocs of different constituencies—pros, youth soccer, coaches etc. The pros have the most voting power and they routinely vote for their interests as opposed to what's best for development. We field a team that mostly plays in a 3rd rate league and they do also. The experiment that the MLS can help the national team is over. We had a strong Copa where we again boat raced Costa Rica and then a month later let them return the favor in qualifying, just too much inconsistency. I think a better coach gets us qualified, there's no way man for man Panama, Honduras, and Costa Rica have more talent, this was a mental collapse mixed with poor tactics that lasted the entire hex.
