Denver sheriff deputy suspended for breaking inmate’s wrist with nunchucks

A Denver sheriff deputy broke a man’s wrist with nunchucks during a fight while the man was being admitted to the downtown jail, Denver Department of Public Safety documents show.

Deputy Daniel Rodriguez will serve a three-day suspension for using excessive force on the man, who was intoxicated and fighting with deputies. Another seven days of suspension will be held in abeyance, meaning Rodriguez will serve those days if he breaks department policy again in the next year.

The April 25, 2021, incident prompted the Denver Sheriff Department to change its policy and ban deputies from carrying and using nunchucks, which the department calls OPNs, short for Orcutt Police Nunchaku. The change went into effect Oct. 25, 2021, department spokeswoman Daria Serna said.

Rodriguez used the nunchucks on the inmate — identified by the initials SP in the disciplinary letter — as the man was being admitted to the jail.

The man was transported from a van to an isolation cell, where he began to fight and resist the deputies’ attempt to remove his handcuffs and leg shackles, the letter states. Multiple deputies attempted to restrain the man, who was high on several substances and not responding to communication, it says.

Rodriguez used his nunchucks on the man’s right arm, and another deputy used his on both of the man’s feet.

Keenan Anderson, cousin of Black Lives Matter co-founder, dies from cardiac arrest after being tased by Los Angeles police

A 31-year-old father and English teacher died from cardiac arrest last week after he was repeatedly tased by police, according to the Los Angeles Police Department, marking the third officer-involved death in the city this year.

Police encountered Keenan Anderson, who is the cousin of Black Lives Matter co-founder Patrisse Cullors, on January 3 at the site of a traffic collision in Los Angeles’ Venice neighborhood, police said in a news release last week.

As police struggled to arrest Anderson, they tased him repeatedly, edited body-worn camera footage released by police shows. After being arrested, Anderson was brought to a local hospital, where he went into cardiac arrest and was pronounced dead, according to police.

Police said they responded to a traffic collision the afternoon of January 3 and saw Anderson “running in the middle of the street and exhibiting erratic behavior.” On one officer’s body-worn camera, released and edited by police, a woman at the traffic collision site tells police, “I think that guy up there needs help though, because the guy’s trying to run away.”

Body-worn camera video shows Anderson initially stopped and spoke to an officer before the video cuts to a text screen that says Anderson “attempted to run away.”

When the video resumes, Anderson is seen jogging into the street as the officer pursues him and stops him in a busy intersection, commanding Anderson to lay down on his stomach.

Anderson does not appear to comply immediately, and two other officers arrive and move him to lie prone on his stomach on the street, telling Anderson to “relax.” As officers struggle on top of him, Anderson can be heard screaming, “Help, they’re trying to kill me” and “Please, don’t do this.”

In footage from another responding officer, an officer can be heard repeatedly warning Anderson to stop resisting and turn over, and threatening several times to tase Anderson.

“They’re trying to George Floyd me,” says Anderson, as officers try to roll him onto his stomach.

Then, an officer deploys a taser multiple times on Anderson, who says, “I’m not resisting.”

Officers eventually handcuff and place ankle hobbles on Anderson, the video shows.

Later in the video, the Los Angeles Fire Department places Anderson, who appears conscious, onto a gurney near an ambulance. Police say in the news release that Anderson was given medical care at the scene by fire department personnel before being transported to a local hospital.

“While at the hospital, Anderson went into cardiac arrest and was pronounced deceased,” the release says.

Los Angeles police captain Kelly Muñiz said in the video that Anderson died approximately four-and-a-half hours after the use of force.

A preliminary toxicology-blood screen of Anderson’s blood samples tested positive for cocaine and marijuana, police said, adding the Los Angeles County coroner’s office is expected to conduct their own independent toxicology tests.

Ex-Florida Chief Accused of Raping 14-Year-Old Girl on Gunpoint Arrested Again for Stalking Same Victim

A former Central Florida police chief already facing charges for the sexual battery of a 14-year-old girl is now facing aggravated stalking charges.

William Ray Pruitt, 56, who previously served as the chief of the Center Hill Police Department, was taken into custody in Lake County on Friday and charged with one count of felony aggravated stalking and one count of misdemeanor simple stalking.

Pruitt was arrested in December of 2022 for allegedly sexually battering a then-14-year-old girl while using a deadly weapon in 2020. According to authorities, Pruitt lured the victim into his truck, held a gun to her, and sexually assaulted her.

The victim told investigators that she denied the encounters until the end of 2022 out of fear of Pruitt, who threatened to kill himself and promised to "blow her brains out" if she ever told anyone, police wrote in the arrest report.

According to a sworn affidavit of probable cause from the Lake County Sheriff's Office obtained by Law&Crime, the alleged stalking began in October 2021, when the victim was 15 years old, and continued into December 2022, when she was 16.

The victim contacted the Lake County Sheriff's Office on Dec. 1, 2022, to report an incident which she said was "part of an ongoing pattern of stalking" from Pruitt.

Investigators spoke with the victim's mother, who explained that she first met Pruitt in March 2020, but said that she later "began to suspect Pruitt was grooming [the victim] and possibly having an inappropriate relationship with her."

The affidavit states Pruitt told the victim he was an ex-cop who had hacked her phone and tracked all her activity for him.

Five MPD Officers fired after Nichols investigation

Memphis Police posted this statement to Twitter as well as Facebook and provided the following photos.

“The Memphis Police Department has concluded its administrative investigation into the tragic death of Mr. Tyre Nichols. After a thorough review of the circumstances surrounding this incident, we have determined that five (5) MPD officers violated multiple department policies, including excessive use of force, duty to intervene, and duty to render aid.

Earlier today, each officer charged was terminated from the Memphis Police Department. The Memphis Police Department is committed to protecting and defending the rights of every citizen in our city. The egregious nature of this incident is not a reflection of the good work that our officers perform, with integrity, every day.” – Chief Cerelyn “CJ” Davis, Memphis Police.

Shelby County District Attorney Steve Mulroy provided the following statement:

Quote

“We understand there are many questions from the public surrounding the Tyre Nichols case. Additionally, we’re aware of the reasonable requests to release video, which we are committed to doing as swiftly as possible.

But, we must reemphasize the law places limits on such video release, and that we have to make sure we do so without compromising our ability to arrive at justice in this case.

N.J. police officer charged after helping driver leave scene of crash, prosecutor says

A police officer in Bergen County was charged with hindering apprehension Thursday after investigators said he gave his personal vehicle to a person involved in a traffic accident and then told another officer he was the driver.

Allendale Police Officer Victor Bartoloma, 35, of Mahwah, on Sunday “provided his personal vehicle to a driver involved in the accident so the driver could leave the scene,” Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella said in a statement.

Bartoloma then told another police officer who responded from Ridgewood that he was the driver of the vehicle involved in the crash, Musella said.

However, security cameras showed Bartoloma was not the driver and wasn’t in the area at the time of the accident, Musella said.

“An eyewitness also stated to police on scene that Bartoloma was not the driver of the vehicle involved in the accident,” Musella said.

Pretty surprised this thread is on the second page considering the news at the moment.  And I just heard they are releasing the body came footage tomorrow evening.  Why they hell would they do that going into a weekend?  That sounds like a horrible idea.

There's zero chance that the video won't be brutal. Hopefully arresting these guys softens the effect but yeah would not be surprised to see things burn.
