Koolblue13
The Ravens and a super bowl trip came down to the kicker. (against the Pats, who have won 3 Super Bowls on the leg of their kicker.Kickers are very important. Making or missing your field goas can be the difference between winning and losng, or in Cundiff's case, going to the Super Bowl or staying home. ~Bang I'm saying I don't care who it is or how old he is or how long he has been with the team. I don't give a **** who it is as long as he makes the kicks. It's been a problem far to long.

justice98
I am up for the entertainment value of what'll happen if Cundiff goes out and misses 2 out of 3 tonight. Just to see people's heads explode. lol

The numbers speak for themselves. His last year in Arizona, he was 16 for 17. Last year in Houston, he hit 32 FGs at an 84% clip. 87% in two years in Houston. They're cutting him because kickers are deemed expendable. Most teams aren't gonna pay a kicker, they'll find a cheaper alternative.

rk3025
Cundiff is the teacher for kickers to practice with and learn to kick quicker to prevent blocks and we hired the teacher and cut to the student. Shanny is smart enough to call time out and not rush the holder to have the laces correct.
Missouri_Skins_Fan
Didn't we sign the most accurate Kicker last year, to compete with Gano? Only to see him shank gimme FG's during pre season & thus was let go? What's my point? My point is, some players perform differently for other teams. It's why you all have heard the phrase "Well, maybe a change of scenery, will do him good". Why do people say that? They say that because some players can go from playing terrible, or not living up to their high draft pick or whatever on one team.....then go to another team and miraculously...they're awesome. Well, the vice versa also applies. They can be great on 1 team, then go to a different team and don't pan out. What are some of the players we have brought in who were AWESOME, then completely suck while here? The list is extensive, my good friends. Jason Taylor, Haynesworth, Archuleta, etc....etc...etc. The list is long. We knew what we had in Gano. He is very young at 25 and was improving, imo. We cut him loose, to take a Kicker we "THINK" is going to be a better choice because of his history. Really? What if he sucks here? And Gano is gone from signing elsewhere? And Rackers signs elsewhere as well? Then we're stuck with a crappy 31 year old kicker with no time here... Love Cooley! But cutting him, was the right move for this team now going forward. I can't get behind the Cundiff signing, though. Hopefully...I'm wrong & he continues to be very good while a Redskin. But I've seen this story too many times, as a Redskin fan. Specially at the kicker position. This COULD work out, but it was too risky, imo.
Jericho
If you look purely at FG %, even the best kickers are inconsistent from year to year. Not saying they'll hit 50%. No modern kicker is in that range. But most NFL kickers will vary between 75% and 95% in a particular year. Look at Adam Vinatieri, certainly the most famous and arguably best kicker. In 16 seasons, he's kicked under 80% six times. In 2007, Vinatieri did not even make a field goal over 39 yards. But he still has a FG % over 80 % for his career and most regard him as pretty darn good. But he's had bad seasons. No matter who you get, there's an element of uncertainty. ---------- Post added August-29th-2012 at 11:10 AM ---------- this is true and i have always said this. cundiff is 5 for 19 over 50 yds.....for his career so thats scary I don't understand how a guy so good on kickoffs is so bad on long field goals. You'd think there would be some correlation between the two.

Rocca cannot kick off.
flock53
Shoulda just kept Gano.....This isnt an upgrade, its a wash at best and Cundiff has more history to prove he isnt anything special....not saying Gano would be either. Just a move to make a move and have 34 pages made over it.
rk3025
Billy is 32 and some in league are 40. He hit 7 in one game against the Giants and player for Dallas until he got hurt; has the Cowboy record of 56 yards for longest field goal. Great pickup and I will not get ulcers worrying about losing games. Gano took to long to kick for blocks.
Clutch03
I am amazed that a thread about kicker that I was positive that most Skins fans hated has reached 13 pages. This thread will never get old to me, this is quite fascinating to watch. A couple of days ago when Rackers was cut it seemed like most people hated that Gano had made them team again. ExtremeSkins is earning its name with this one!
Est.1974
Cundiff is more accurate inside the 50. Gano is more accurate outside the 50. Annnnd waaassshhhhhh. And over the last 3 years as a sample, 90% of the Redskins field goal attempts have been from inside the 50. I'm sure that stat runs true through out the league. Therefore, being accurate from inside the 50 must have a much greater value, imo....

s0crates
Well, Cundiff has already missed a field goal badly. Not sure this was such a smart move at kicker. Just ask Baltimore fans what they think of Cundiff (hint: they think he cost them a Championship).
KDawg
Time for more over reactions. I gotta say, I'm surprised people are this into the kicker battle. Personally, I think they both stink. So I'll be scared every time either one of em lined up. At least Cundiff kicks the ball out of the end zone on kickoffs, though.
RSanz
LOL. Cundiff is no better than Gano. At least Gano's misses were close. That was way left by at least 40 yards. This just reinforces my disgust with this move. Cundiff blows!

This just reinforces my disgust with this move. Cundiff blows! It was a 46 yard field goal. Last year from 40-49 yard range Cundiff was 81.8% while Gano was 72.7% (This is not counting blocks) You need to relax a little, he just got here and isn't used to working with a new holder yet. People want so bad to say "TOLD YA SO! HA HA!" that they jump all over a single long FG miss in the preseason, geez.
