Songs that are lyrically brilliant

I've heard this song hundreds of times, but listened to it this morning and was just in awe. Maybe its cuz I haven't listened to it in a while, but wow.

I wonder how long it took to write this. Even people who don't like hip hop should be able to appreciate this song.

Safe for work

Song is Fame by GZA

What other songs do you think are just lyrically brilliant.

On second thought, not so sure if this is "brilliant," but its certainly clever.

[Verse 1]

They was told not to ride in PATTY'S HEARSE

And stay out of CHARLES MANSION

Took ABRAHAM'S LINCOLN through the TODD BRIDGE expansion

WiILLIS READS a map that marks the spot showin

On his left, GEORGE BURNS a blunt WILLIAM'S HOLDIN'

TYRA BANKED the money that CHAKA CONNED him for

ALICIA KEYED his car for givin' MELBA MORE

For the REDD FOXX she bought off the block, but thought twice

As DEBORA ****S the gun cuz she beat KELLY'S PRICE

When ROSA PARKED the truck on the farm that KIM FIELDS

LINDA TRIPPED tryin' to walk in LAURYN'S HEELS

Water dripped outta FARRAH'S FAUCET in the glass

She was "Superfly", CUTIS MAY FEEL her ass

CHRIS TOOK HER to a show, TED TURNED HER to a hoe

ROBERT (THE RZA) DIGGS the beat, but ain't feelin' the flow

But he signed too fast, for 1/2 of JOHNNY'S CASH

NIA LONGED for the album to drop, cameras flashed

TOM SAW HER at the LUCILLE BALL up in the foyer

He confronted RICHARD, PRIOR to hirin' his lawyer

SUGE'S KNIGHT removed the rook off the board

DON KING was checked and AL SHARPENED the sword [CHORUS]

"Wantin cream, I ain't wantin fame"

"Fame is the measure"

"Rap celebs"

"The place where stars are born"

[Verse 2]

The SAINTS marched in, KURTIS BLOWING his horn

TOM CRUISED the boulevard, CHRIS ROCKED the song

For the hundred time, they pressed rewind to the beginning

They toast the rhyme, the juice spilled on JOHN'S LINNEN

They took it to ELIZABETH, TELL HER to dry clean

The lone seamstress, who was schemin' on AL'S GREEN

You know they shoot for the STARS, AND BUCK WILD

Like the kids in the yard who play with JANE'S CHILD

A beautician laced ERYKAH'S BAD DOO

SEAN COMBED through the evidence, just to get a clue

The needle in the haystack, from outta EARTHA'S KITT

Knew the TIGER WOULD kill him, once thrown in BRAD'S PIT

JESSE OWIN' the money from the weed BUBBA SPARKED

Made his journey seemed far, as he walked in DICK CLARKES

JEFFEREY'S LIONS stuck with a thorn from GEORGE BUSH

PAUL PIERCED the heart, as the crowd pushed

Acting alone... DREW BURIED MORE bones

Of the victims, three blocks from JIM'S BROWNSTONE

They shared the same bowl, he caught NATALIE'S COLD

The producer, threw the butter on ESTHER'S ROLL

NIPSEY WRESTLED him down, got his jaw wide

In a instant, BROOKE SHIELDS him from the gunfire

ANGIE STONES him to death, with those vocals

KEITH SWEAT from the workout, just from runnin' local [CHORUS] "Wantin cream, I ain't wantin fame"

"Fame is the measure"

"Rap celebs"

"The place where stars are born"

[Verse 3]

LARRY'S BIRD flew outta NICHOLAS CAGE

JOE TEXTED messages from SATCHEL'S PAGE

BET HE WRITE letters with ink from SEAN'S PEN

Infinite bars, you couldn't tell where the song end

GLENN CLOSE enough to quickly dub the tapes

RICHARD GEAR ripped, while he was climbin' BILL GATES

He was a southerner, posin' as a native NYer

JASON KID took his 1st steps in JIMMY'S WALKER

And stayed on line, chattin' with rap celebs

Used BERNIE'S MAC to search VERONICA'S WEB

It cost him his life for the advice she gave

Now PETE ROSE lay on VANESSA'S RED GRAVE [CHORUS]

"Wantin cream, I ain't wantin fame"

"Fame is the measure"

"Rap celebs"

"The place where stars are born"

"Wantin cream, I ain't wantin fame"

"Fame is the measure"

"Rap celebs"

"The place where stars are born"

Bruce Springsteen- Blinded By the Light.

Go ahead, listen to Bruce's original version, a song about growing up and coming of age.

Once you realize the genius of these lyrics, you'll hate Manfred Mann for the rest of your life, too.

Just watched a film on Simon and Garfunkel..on the making."Bridge over Troubled water" Supposed to be a two verse song wrote a third in the studio.Too long for radio play, too slow and to be a good single etc etc. So I put it on and listened and it really is one of those songs whether you like S&G or not.

Back in HS a poetry teacher I had spent a whole semester on that album. I got so sick of it. Over and over and over..Me and my buddies were more into Steppenwolf, Ten Years After Hendrix and all too cool for S&G. Well now that I've gotten older and let it sit for a long while I can appreciate it more.

I came into this thread for the specific purpose of mentioning "The Boxer".

I'll also mention "City of New Orleans".

"Bohemian Rhapsody"

How about "Space Oddity"?

Four from Prince:

When I Lay My Hands On U

Are you ready for the touch that makes you go insane

Breast to lips to cheek to mane

I'll pull your hair

You'll feel no pain

Are you ready for the only forever we'll both obtain

The only joy in this forsaken game

You'll feel ashamed and ordained

When I lay my hands on you

Pheromone

Her eyes are closed

But there's no penetration

He just makes her point the pistol 2 his nose

While he masturbates

And now I see a tear

Heading down towards her smile

What happens next

It all depends upon your style

Annie Christian

Annie Christian wanted

To be number 1

But her kingdom never comes

Thy will be done

She couldn't stand the glory

She would be 2nd to none

The way Annie tells the story, she's His only son

Annie Christian wanted

To be a big star

So she moved to Atlanta

And she bought a blue car

She killed black children, and what's fair is fair

If you try and say you're crazy, everybody say electric chair

Electric chair!

Joy In Repetition

Talkin' to no one in particular

They say the baddest, I am tonight

Four-letter words

Are seldom heard

With such dignity and bite

Four from Crowded House

Hole In The River

(the song is about the lead singer/songwriter's aunt's suicide)

There's a hole in the river where my auntie lies

From the land of the living to the air and sky

Left her car by the river

Left her shoes beside

Through the thorns and the bushes

I hope she was...

Dreaming of glory

Miles above the mountains and plains

Free at last

We were touched by a cold wind, my father and I

The sound of desperate breathing

Her fear inside us all

She was coming to see him

But something changed her mind

Drove her down to the river

There is no return

Into Temptation

(about a married man dealing with the temptation of another woman)

You opened up your door

I couldn't believe my luck

You in your new blue dress

Taking away my breath

The cradle is soft and warm

Couldn't do me no harm

You're showing me how to give

Into temptation

Knowing full well the earth will rebel

Into temptation

A muddle of nervous words

Could never amount to betrayal

The sentence is all my own

The price is to watch it fail

As I turn to go

You looked at me for half a second

With an open invitation

For me to go...

Into temptation

Knowing full well the earth will rebel

Into temptation

Safe in the wide open arms of hell

Chocolate Cake

(about American excess)

I saw Elvis Presley walk out of a 7-11

And a woman gave birth to a baby

And then bowled 257

The excess of fat on your American bones

Will cushion the impact as you sink like a stone

Can I have another piece of chocolate cake?

Tammy Baker, Tammy Baker

Can I buy another cheap Picasso fake?

Cheap Picasso, cheap Picasso fake

Can I have another piece of chocolate cake?

Kathy Straker, boy, could she lose some weight

Can I buy another slice of real estate?

Liberace must be laughing in his grave

There Goes God

What'll I tell him

When he comes to me for absolution?

Wouldn't you know it, hope I don't make a bad decision

Cause I'd like to believe that there is a God

Why sinful angels suffer for love

I'd like to believe in the terrible truth, in the beautiful lie

Hey, don't look now

But there goes God

In his sexy pants and his sausage dog

And he can't stand Beelzebub

Cause he looks so good in black

Night After Night - Lenny & The Squigtones

Night after night

I held you in my arms

Darlin'

Night after night

I sampled all your charms

Night after night, wa-ooh

Lately I can tell

You're marching to a wedding bell

I only wanna do what's right

But who wants to look at the same broad night after night

Night after night

Night after night

Night after night

Night after night

I've treat you like a queen

Darlin'

Night after night

'Cause you were seventeen

Night after night, wa-ooh

Then your birthday rolled around

So you let me go to town

Now I've lost my appetite

'Cause even true love can be boring night after night

Night after night

Night after night

Night after night

We have nothing in common girl

You know that's a fact

To marry a girl, I'd have to be cracked

Night after night

I'll think of you and smile

Darlin'

Night after night

But only for a while

Night after night, wa-ooh

Then I'll find me someone new

Who won't be someone dumb like you

One who won't know how to fight

And won't make me sleep on the sofa night after night

Night after night

Night after night

Night after night

Night after night

Night after night

"We've Got A Bigger Problem Now" Dead Kennedys

Last call for alcohol.

Last call for your freedom of speech.

Drink up. Happy hour is now enforced by law.

Don't forget our house special, it's called a Trickie Dickie Screwdriver.

It's got one part Jack Daniels, two parts purple Kool-Aid,

and a jigger of formaldehyde

from the jar with Hitler's brain in it we got in the back storeroom.

Happy trails to you. Happy trails to you.

I am Emperor Ronald Reagan

Born again with fascist cravings

Still, you made me president

Human rights will soon go 'way

I am now your Shah today

Now I command all of you

Now you're going to pray in school

I'll make sure they're Christian too

California Uber alles

Uber alles California

Ku Klux Klan will control you

Still you think it's natural

****** knockin' for the master race

Still you wear the happy face

You closed your eyes, can't happen here

Alexander Haig is near

Vietnam won't come back you say

Join the army or you will pay

California Uber alles

Uber alles California

Yeah, that's it. Just relax.

Have another drink, few more pretzels, little more MSG.

Turn on those Dallas Cowboys on your TV.

Lock your doors. Close your mind.

It's time for the two-minute warning.

Welcome to 1984

Are you ready for the third world war?!?

You too will meet the secret police

They'll draft you and they'll jail your niece

You'll go quitely to boot camp

They'll shoot you dead, make you a man

Don't you worry, it's for a cause

Feeding global corporations' claws

Die on our brand new poison gas

El Salvador or Afghanistan

Making money for President Reagan

And all the friends of President Reagan

"Halo 'Round The Moon" Steve Earle

There's a halo 'round the moon

So I know it ain't to blame

'Cause I knew what love could do

But I loved her just the same

Then I let her slip away

Now I'm all alone and blue

That's the price I got to pay

There's a halo 'round the moon

There's a ghost that haunts this town

Just ask anyone you see

He drags his chain around

And no spell can set him free

And he looks a lot like me

And if you ask him why he's bound

He'll just say he lost the key

There's a ghost that haunts this town

There's no shelter from the storm

Without the lightnin' and the rain

And love would hold no charm

If it wasn't for the pain

And it's always been that way

No matter what you do

No matter what you say

There's a halo 'round the moon

Upon the sand, upon the bay

"There is a quick and easy way" you say

Before you illustrate

I'd rather state :

"I'm not the man you think I am

I'm not the man you think I am"

And sorrow's native son

He will not smile for anyone

And pretty girls make graves

Oh...

End of the pier, end of the bay

You tug my arm, and say : "give in to lust,

Give up to lust, oh heaven knows we'll

Soon be dust... "

Oh, I'm not the man you think I am

I'm not the man you think I am

And sorrow's native son

He will not rise for anyone

And pretty girls make graves

Oh really ?

Oh...

I could have been wild and I could have

Been free

But nature played this trick on me

She wants it now

And she will not wait

But she's too rough

And I'm too delicate

Then, on the sand

Another man, he takes her hand

A smile lights up her stupid face

(and well, it would)

I lost my faith in womanhood

I lost my faith in womanhood

I lost my faith...

Oh...

Hand in glove...

The sun shines out of our behinds...

Oh...

Quoted for truth.

I learned a few years ago that Springsteen penned the song and had his version on his debut album. It is, without a doubt, the superior version. Springsteen in general is a great song writer and he surrounds himself with excellent musicians.

I'm not much of a lyrics guy, so take my opinion with a grain of salt, but this song gets me every time.

Here's the first verse and chorus:

I bet ya you can't even see the sun

Ah, the sun is shining

Right before your eyes

I bet ya you can't even see yourself

'Cause when you're lost

Sometimes yourself is hard to find

*I can see the sun in late December

I see forgotten treasures 'neath the sea

Tides that defeat identity

Washing away the beauty that was in your mind

Hello It's Me - Todd Rundgren

Hello, It's me

I've thought about us for a long, long time

Maybe I think too much but something's wrong

There's something here that doesn't last too long

Maybe I shouldn't think of you as mine

Great lyrics and a sick bass line.

---------- Post added May-28th-2012 at 11:34 AM ----------

Hard to leave out one of my City's favourite sons:

Hail.

Imagine, to me, is one of Lennon's more overrated songs. I'd rather not say why, lest we turn this into a big political debate (which this doesn't need to be), but I'm not too fond of it.

Working Class Hero or Instant Karma, though? Genius.
