Songs that are lyrically brilliant

Some John Mellencamp (lol...whoops):

Rain On The Scarecrow

Well there's ninety-seven crosses

Planted in the courthouse yard

And ninety-seven families

Who lost ninety-seven farms

I think about my grandpa

My neighbors and my name

And some nights I feel like dyin'

Like that scarecrow in the rain

Rain on the scarecrow, blood on the plow

This land fed a nation, yeah, this land made me proud

And son, I'm just sorry, they're just memories for you now

Rain on the scarecrow, blood on the plow

Rain on the scarecrow, blood on the plow

Jack And Diane

Gonna let it rock

Let it roll

Let the Bible Belt come down

And Save My soul

Hold on to 16 as long as you can

Changes come around real soon

Make us women and men

Oh yeah life goes on

Long after the thrill of livin is gone

Oh yeah say life goes on

Long after the thrill of livin is gone

Pink Houses

There's a black man with a black cat

Livin' in a black neighborhood

He's got an interstate runnin' through his front yard

You know he thinks that he's got it so good

And there's a woman in the kitchen

Cleanin' up evenin' slop

And he looks at her and says, "Hey darlin'

I can remember when you could stop a clock"

Oh, but ain't that America for you and me

Ain't that America somethin' to see baby

Ain't that America home of the free, yeah

Little pink houses for you and me

Oh yeah for you and me

Well there's a young man in a T-shirt

Listenin' to a rock 'n' roll station

He's got a greasy hair, greasy smile

He says, "Lord this must be my destination"

'Cause they told me when I was younger

Said, "Boy you're gonna be President"

But just like everything else those old crazy dreams

Just kinda came and went

Radio Clash - The Clash

This is radio clash from pirate satellite

Orbiting your living room' date='

Cashing in the bill of rights

Cuban army surplus or refusing all third lights

This is radio clash on pirate satellite

This sound does not subscribe

To the international plan

In the psycho shadow of the white right hand

Then that see ghettology as an urban Vietnam

Giving deadly exhibitions of murder by napalm

This is radio clash tearing up the seven veils

This is radio clash please save us, not the whales

This is radio clash underneath a mushroom cloud

This is radio clash

You don't need that funeral shroud

Forces have been looting

My humanity

Curfews have been curbing

The end of liberty

Hands of law have sorted through

My identity

But now this sound is brave

And wants to be free - anyway to be free

This is radio clash on pirate satellite

This is not free Europe

Noh an armed force network

This is radio clash using audio ammunition

This is radio clash can we get that world to listen?

This is radio clash using aural ammunition

This is radio clash can we get that world to listen?

This is radio clash on pirate satellite

Orbiting your living room,

Cashing in the bill of rights

This is radio clash on pirate satellite

This is radio clash everybody hold on tight

A-riggy diggy dig dang dang!

Go back to urban 'nam!

Operator - Jim Croce

Operator

Well could you help me place this call?

See, the number on the matchbook is old and faded

She's living in L.A.

With my best old ex-friend Ray

A guy she said she knew well and sometimes hated

Isn't that the way they say it goes?

Well, let's forget all that

And give me the number if you can find it

So I can call just to tell 'em I'm fine

And to show

I've overcome the blow

I've learned to take it well

I only wish my words could just convince myself

That it just wasn't real

But that's not the way it feels.

You're So Vain - Carly Simon

You walked into the party

Like you were walking onto a yacht

Your hat strategically dipped below one eye

Your scarf it was apricot

You had one eye in the mirror

As you watched yourself gavotte

And all the girls dreamed that they'd be your partner

They'd be your partner, and

You're so vain

You probably think this song is about you

You're so vain

I'll bet you think this song is about you

Don't you? Don't you?

Dirty Creature - Split Enz

(about the songwriter's battle with panic attacks and depression he was going through at the time)

Dirty Creature come my way

from the bottom of a big black lake

Shuffles up to my window

making sure I'm awake

S'probably gonna pick my brain

Got me in a vice-like grip

He said "One slip, your dead"

Dirty Creature of habit

Little horror here to stay

Anyone in his right mind

would tell it to go away

but the river of dread runs deep

full of unspeakable things

The creature don't mess around

I don't wanna mess with him

I don't wanna sail, I don't wanna sail

I don't wanna, I don't wanna sail tonight

Dirty Creature's got me at a disadvantage from the inside

Tentacles on the brain keep me from falling asleep

I'm rooted to the spot

The beast don't know when to stop

Sneaking up from behind

Binds and gags my wits

Dirty Creature got my head exactly where he wants it

I don't wanna sail, I don't wanna sail,

I don't wanna, I don't wanna sail tonight,

Taniwha is waiting for me just below the surface so bright

Even as we speak the Dirty Creature springs a nasty surprise

Dirty Creature knows my type

Found it in a magazine

He's seen the look of fear before

splattered all over the screen

The animal magnet thug

draws me out of myself

I need a dragon-slayer

who can save me from myself

I don't want to sail, I don't want to sail,

I don't want to set sail for the middle of nowhere tonight

Dirty Creature's got me at a disadvantage from the inside

I don't want to sail upon the waters of invention tonight

I always thought the brilliance of The Clash lay in how ****ing stupid some of their lyrics are.

Black people gotta lot a problems

But they don't mind throwing a brick

White people go to school

Where they teach you how to be thick

An' everybody's doing

Just what they're told to

An' nobody wants

To go to jail!

And, of course:

He's in love with rock'n'roll woaahh

He's in love with gettin' stoned woaahh

He's in love with Janie Jones woaahh

But he don't like his boring job, no

Those are literally two of the greatest songs written in the English language. And they would fail you in fourth grade if you wrote that as poetry.

The Byrds- Eight Miles High

Eight miles high and when you touch down

You'll find that it's stranger than known

Signs in the street that say where you're going

Are somewhere just being their own

Nowhere is there warmth to be found

Among those afraid of losing their ground

Rain gray town known for it's sound

In places small faces unbound

Round the squares huddled in storms

Some laughing some just shapeless forms

Sidewalk scenes and black limousines

Some living, some standing alone

Asheru-Revolution

It's been a long time comin'
Had a long rhyme runnin' through my head...

All mornin' since the early crack of dawn an'
Seein' omens as a warnin'
Stickin' out like an awnin'
In places they don't belong
My premonition is...

Strong, this **** don't feel right
When bammers know better
But do the opposite
They claimin' they go-getters
But what does profit get but
Mo' money, mo' problems
We break bread as if we have pockets
With no bottoms
Can't be further from the truth
Like words spit in the booth
Mixed down, packaged and shipped
Then marketed to the youth
But the real disconnect
Is when **** goes unchecked
Words become acts
And kids lack respect
Society points the finger
Artists collect the check
Any attempts to balance things out
We reject
We celebrate death
Like we know the end is near
I can't tell if it's fear
Or if we truly don't care
But me I'm for the living
Live the art that I'm givin'
Give my heart, that's a given
Do my part cause I'm driven
From the start I been hittin'
With anti-nonsense
And critics be so quick
To label it conscious
OK, you got me,
Even though it's not me
Completely, I see you
Want to box me neatly
Treat me as if what I'm sayin' ain't really real

pretty much anything by Townes Van Zandt. But I've always been partial to this one.

The wicked king of clubs awoke

it was to his queen turned

his lips were laughing as they spoke

his eyes like bullets burned

the sun's upon a gambling day

his queen smiled low and blissfully

let's make some wretched fool to pay

plain it was she did agree

He send his deuce down into diamond

his four to hart, and his trey to spade

three kings with their legions come

preparations soon where made

they voted club the days commander

gave him an army face and number

all but the outlaw jack of diamonds

and the aces in the sky

He give his sevens first instructions

spirit me a game of stud

stakes unscarred by limitation

'tween a man named Gold and man named Mud

Club filled Gold with greedy vapors

'til his long, green eyes did glow

Mud was left with the sighs and trembles

watching his hard earned money go

Flushes fell on Gold like water

tens they paired and paired again

but the aces only flew through heaven

and the diamond jack called no man friend

The diamond queen saw Muds ordeal

began to think of her long lost son

fell to her knees with a mother's mercy

prayed to the angels every one

The diamond queen, she prayed and prayed

and the diamond angel filled Muds hole

the wicked king of clubs himself

fell in face down in front of Gold

now three kings come to Clubs command

but the angels from the sky did ride

three kings up on the streets of Gold

three fireballs on the muddy side

The club queen heard her husband's call

but Lord that queen of diamond's joy

when the outlaw in the heavenly hall

turned out to be a wandering boy

Now Mud he checked and Gold bet all

and Mud he raised and Gold did call

and the smile just melted off his face

when Mud turned over that diamond ace

Now here's what this story's told

if you feel like Mud you'll end up Gold

if you feel like lost, you'll end up found

so amigo, lay them raises down

Sometimes - Bilal

Sometimes, I wish I wasn't me

Sometimes, I wish I was drug free

Sometimes, wish I saw the exit sign first

Sometimes, wish I knew the truth without search

Sometimes, I wish I could go where I never been

See what I never saw

Do what I never did

Or walk before I could crawl

Sometimes, I wish my eyes wasn't so red

Sometimes, I wish I had breakfast in bed

Sometimes, I mean it's worth it

Since I did all the work last night

Sometimes, you ain't good to me, yes

I am good to you

And you don't see my attention the way that I do

Sometimes, hey slim, you should be nicer than you are

Sometimes, you take that complaining **** way too far

I mean, I thought it was cute in the beginning but now

I think you only do it 'cause you know I hate it

Sometimes, you got me wishing I didn't have home training

Sometimes, then it wouldn't hurt me so bad

With dreams of knocking you in your head

Then it wouldn't hurt me so bad

With our kitchen knife put up your ***

Sometimes, wish I knew life with no pain, yeah

Wish I held the keys to this game

Sometimes, I pretend 'cause I'm afraid to be, afriad to be

Sometimes, I hope I live to see twenty five

Sometimes, I wish I could be like Moses

Round up my people, move out the ghetto

And live a better life

Sometimes, I wish I didn't try so hard

Sometimes, who knows truth any way

They don't know nothing, who needs that approval

The sun in your hands player

Move at your own pace, listen to your own mind

Do your own thing, yeah yeah

I'm saying it because I love ya

And I want to grow with you, yeah yeah

But you want to run in the other direction

So I got to stay on my path until I win

I win, I win, I win

I want to win, I want to win, I want to win, I want to win

Oh sometimes, sing it with me I wish

(I wish in love) And I wish, oh I wish

(I wish in peace) Oh sometimes

(I wish in hope) I wish hope

(I wish true) I wish true

(I wish clearly) Hey I wish so clearly sometimes

(Wish with no fear) I wish with no fear

(I have no fear) I have no fear

(Have no doubt) I have no doubt

(I don't doubt) I don't doubt

(Have no doubt) No, I don't doubt

(Have no doubt, I wish love)

I wish love, hey hey

Sally - Bilal

Sally scanned me right out the condo

How quick, How quick the mind goes

Game meets game that's how the life goes

Stripped the boy out of his house coat

High

High up in the sky

Cold as ice

Tell no lies

Sally

Knew she had a plan on the first day that I met her

Never should have ****ed wit me

It got twisted up when she told me that she loved me

Damn, should have known

Had joint accounts but she did my banking for me

Sally wasn't nothin' but I treated her like somethin'

Low down dirty

and I never saw it coming

Sally scanned me right out the condo

How quick, How quick the mind goes

Game meets game that's how the life goes

Stripped the boy out of his house coat

High

High up in the sky

Cold as ice

Tell no lies

Sally
