Wife told Tazette this morning if she can clean up and keep her room and the bonus room clean for one year (in reality, 3-4 months, just told her a year) that we can get a dog.

Only dog I had growing up was a basset hound, pure bread. When he passed, my dad got a golden lab, pure bread. All our cats over the years, all rescues.

Anyhow, wife wants a rescue. I don't know about that though, cause how will I know how big they will get, temperament, etc. and if it's good with kids? There are certain breeds of dogs that I want to avoid and I don't want a big dog at all. Small, inside dog.

look on pet finder. You can search breed specific. You can search small private rescues. You have a lot of options. Let me know when you're ready and I'll help.

Thanks man, I'll definitely hit you up in a few months along with Stroker and Mary.  I don't have any experience with rescues, it's definitely an option, I just want to know what I'm buying and what to expect.  Don't want to think it's going to be a small dog, then it turn out to be medium/large.

We have the perfect set-up for a small dog.  Big enough backyard with a privacy fence that surrounds it, so it can play and get plenty of exercise.  House is big enough.

Taze, we are getting a dog next January. (Deal was all the kids need to be potty trained).

I wanted one earlier, couple of years ago actually.  With our last cat passing, now is a good time.  Plus, I wanted Tazette to be old enough to clean up the **** lol

Good luck with the biz KB. Hope you get the investment.

The hospital lyfe is all over the place. Held for my first euthanasia since my old Humane Society days today. Felt like the warden escorting a prisoner down death row. Female Mastiff, bone cancer. Had her wagging her tail for a minute before the injection. Clearly a super sweet dog. Family wasn't there to witness it, but I'm going to have to get used to the fam being there sometimes.

On the flip side, I got a $10 tip from a customer, and tips there are definitely not commonplace. I talked to her a couple weeks ago about how I run with her dog outside. She was in shock during the convo, came in yesterday and told me how much the dog loves to run now. Put her hand in mine and gave me the money. Been having great conversations with people who bring their animals there, getting a lot of dap - from the entire staff too. I feel the most appreciated I've ever felt at any job.

The job is right in my wheelhouse, the only reason I want to leave every day is because I need to go home and take care of my dogs.

Like I said before though, I took a pay cut in order to do what I love, and am contemplating whether or not to climb the mountain of veterinary school. 8 years of school, I'd finish when I'm 41. Looks like I'll stick with this and make a decision in the summer.

Go for it bro!  You can do anything if you put your mind to it.  41 is still young man, don't let that be a factor.  You would be the type of vet all of us would want/need for our pets.

As passionate as you are for animals and the stories you share on here with us, don't wake up in 8 years with regrets about not trying to make that dream happen bro.

exactly. Dude, I'm 42, I wish I was finishing Vet school.

Taze, start looking into it now about the dog. You can get on a wait list for a puppy you want. Go to the shelter and walk some dogs. Get to know them. The one I started at was small and on a beautiful wooded lot. You'd never know it was a rescue. Please don't ****ing buy one.

It'll be extremely tough, but I might be up for that. Student loans out the wazoo shall be inbound. Thanks for the support yall. Hearing it from the family and friends too. Always been more of a brute kind of laborer. Will knock the heck out of tough jobs at work, cleaning things better than they've looked since the place was built. Always been my thing, hard work with my hands. Veterinarian is extremely bookwormy, it's a huge adjustment. Again, thanks for the motivation. Hyping me up over here. We'll see....

As far as a dog, dude, you can visit the shelter, see dogs, ask what their ages are, and the breeds they are. Ask about and look up the breeds while you're there, see how large they get, ect. If you need a pup, you can find them at shelters and through rescues too. If you can't find a dog you find suitable, look at a small scale breeder. Don't drop several hundred or a thousand + at a puppy store. You know my story. That **** is sad and ruthless. The puppy you'd get would benefit a disturbing industry.

How old is Tazette again? I ask because the age of a child has a lot to do with the size (breed) of dog I'd recommend. I do not let my 7 year old neice around my dogs without my supervision. The 11 year old neice is good with them, although she is very mature for her age. Level of energy (especially sporadic energy) is another big factor.

My brother has a dachshund living here amongst the kids. Would guess she's about 15 lbs. Good lil dog, but not tiny. Think you should look for something in the teens as far as weight goes. 20s might be small enough for what you have in mind, too.

I wouldn't be afraid of getting a dog that's not a puppy, either. If that's your preference, it's cool, but many MANY dogs at shelters and rescues are well mannered, house trained, and could light up a family's life. I've seen too damn many of them. 2, 3, 10 years old....awesome dogs. Have fun with your research man. Just look up dog breeds that weigh 15 lbs, for starters.
