Your Favorite (Top 5) TV Character

Yohan

Recommended Posts

On my way to the office this morning, the local radio station I listen to mentioned Louie DePalma (Danny Devito) from Taxi as the most iconic TV character. The top 5 they mentioned were 1960 and 1970 centric.  I figured, with the favorite TV show thread, and the favorite movie thread, this would fit right in.

In no particular order:

Walter White - Breaking Bad

Omar Little -  The Wire

Charlie Kelly - It's Always Sunny

Taco MacArthur - The League

Fonzi - Happy Days (Plus I am a Milwaukee kid)

Honorable mentions would be Buffy Summers, Jimmy Neutron and Sterling Archer.

Spock.  (I bet y'all are shocked, huh?)

Control - The Equalizer

Garak - Star Trek DS9

Both of the above are regular guest stars.  My criteria for including them as "favorite characters" is simple - every time I saw their name in the opening credits, I knew this was going to be a good episode, because they were in it.

Archie Bunker.

Sgt Schultz

I can't ever do five of these sorts of lists, and i can't pick a single favorite.

Kramer

Reverend Jim Ignatowski and Louie DePalma from Taxi

Spock

Homer Simpson

Hyacinth Bucket (fun character, and the actress who plays her is amazing.. her comedic sense is very very rare. if you know the name, you know what I mean.)

Jean Luc Picard

Burt Campbell (Soap.. damn he was funny.)

Maxwell Smart

Frasier Crane and his brother Niles. Perfectly played off one another.. people forget how hilariously funny that show was..

Al Swearingen

Batman (Adam West)

Baldrick

You've certainly got some good ones, in there.

As to Frasier and Niles, I've often wondered if Niles wasn't created so that he could be who Frasier was, on Cheers. I assume (never watched it) that on Cheers, Frasier was supposed to do the egghead weirdo bits. But when he got his own series, then he had to be the medium guy. The straight man. So, they needed somebody who could out-Frasier Frasier.

And props for including Max Smart and Adam West.

Get Smart had one of the best writing teams TV ever produced.. the show is still ridiculously funny

and Frasier on cheers was much the same,, thinking he was better than everyone, egghead blowhard who couldn't get out of his own way.

Niles was something entirely different.

Isn't that often the case?  That the most colorful characters are the "minor" ones?

Sometimes I wonder if that's because such characters are simplistic, one-purpose, objects.  They were designed to perform one (dramatic) function.  They're "specialists", so to speak.

Are caricatures more fun?

One of the ones I considered was Col Flagg, from MASH.

This is true, I did consider Newman or Puddy (big fan of Patrick Warburton) from Seinfeld.

I can believe I didn't think of Al Swearingen or Major Winter. Or a host of others.
