Dexter Manley: A Football Life

One of my all time favorites.  I always felt like he got unequal treatment when you compare him to LT.

He wasn't as disruptive.  I bet they both could hold it down at a party.

Really looking forward to this. I've been telling my coworkers for years he would make for a great subject for this show.

I hope they don't make him come across as eccentric.  He was regular guess on Doc Walker's show and Doc spent too much time making jokes at Dexter's expense.

That's not really their MO. It's a well-done show. They're not out to mock people. They're out to tell a compelling story with a good arc.

Shuttled through school despite being illiterate because he was so great. Some highlights and talk about how amazing he was with his contemporaries and family interviewed. Drugs bring him low. Gets clean and redemption. The end.

Manley was great IMO, and it sucked that he got mixed up in the drug world.

One thing i'll never forget is him testifying to a committee on ille...illiti.....how he couldn't read or write.

But, also the more humorous times, like when he and Mike Ditka got into verbal wars and Dex said he was gonna 'ring his clock' and Ditka saying he had the I.Q. of a grapefruit.

Mann and Manley, the bookends on some great Redskin teams in the 80's.  Good times.

In 1987 Ditka said he had the "IQ of a grapefruit", Dexter answered on the field sacking McMahon and chasing him all over Soldier Field during the division playoff game. He had the guts to confess being an illiterate, and to fix it.

I did enjoy watching him and Mann. I was happy to know that he recovered from brain surgery, got rid of the drug addiction, and that he's doing well.

I think we can call it redemption.

Manley gets no where near the credit he should. Mention LT and he's the best LB in NFL history yet during their best years from 82-87 Manley had more sacks and would have probably retired with a lot more if he hadn't been banned from the league and kicked off the team for doing exactly the same thing LT was getting away with doing in NY.

I didn't get to hear it and can't listen at work, but judging from the bits that were tweeted and written about - are we sure he's not still on drugs?  Lord.

It funny you say that, and I really hope that he wasn't paid anything significant by the producers of this show for interviews, etc.  Last time he made good money was for something relating to a Super Bowl about 15 years ago (one involving the Rams, IIRC), and he admitted that the money he received was what started him back on drugs.

I Hope you guys watch more than just the ones on the Redskins. Most of them are pretty good. I'm not too much into the "just"retired players, like Jerome Bettis (next Friday). I like the ones on the older players, like Earl Campbell, etc. Christian Okoye was last week and it was pretty good.

Just watched the one on Barry Sanders the other night. Really interesting guy (besides being the best rb of my lifetime)
