Does Niles Paul Make the Final Roster?

Wondering how Niles Paul fits into the scheme.  Figure 3 TEs on the final roster and Reed #1 receiver in that group, Paulson #1 blocker.  Previously saw Niles' ST play as his roster hook but with the glut of seasoned primarily-ST signings in the off-season I wonder if Paul is a long shot to hold on as the #3 TE.  Veldman is huge and was an adequate receiver in college.  Not saying #3 is Veldman necessarily ... just thinking they want more than Niles has to offer.

Yes Niles is a lock.

I'm obviously not convinced ... Bolster drafted and a number of large-bodied trendy-tall TE signings since last season coupled with horde of back-up LB-ST specialists ... also don't hear much about him as a KO or punt returner.  I think he's done ... stuck in the not quite right at WR and not quite right at TE limbo.

figure he only sticks if the auditions for the 3rd TE don't offer anything better ... convinced though they want something different for that position ... another Reed, a bulldozer or a 7 ft tall freak for the back of the end-zone routes

Yeah, I can't imagine him not making it.  Bolser looked terrible in the spring and I guess he's looked a little better in TC, but nothing that screams that he's earned a spot.  I don't think this team is going to just keep draft picks because (like we have in the past), but we'll see.

Paul is the more ready of the two, and is good on ST.  Bolser can be stashed on the PS and I'm fairly certain no one on earth would even think of signing him to their regular season roster, so he's safe.

I don't know how Paul is going to be used, but I'd be shocked if Bolser ever even saw the game day roster if the team DID keep him.

wait..  i thought niles was going to be the next sterling sharpe...

edit: make that shannon sharpe...  haha..

Ugh, yeah, I had hopes Shanahan would do SOMETHING with him.  Oh well, he's an ST body.

Did we have to start a new thread about Niles? We had this exact conversation about him this time last year... Couldn't we have dusted that one off?! jk.

Yeah, he makes the team and for all the same reasons... the right reasons. He backs up 2-3 different positions and is a stand-out special teams player.

I'll say now what I said then... Niles Paul is the epitome of the kind of player you want on the back end of your roster. And until they can find someone who does what he does better, case closed.

There are 6 TEs on the roster. I assume that Reed & Paulson (can also serve as backup FB) will make it. That leaves a good possibility that 3 will be cut, leaving 1 open spot. Perhaps a better way is to rate their potential to be cut (H,{high}, M, L), I have:

H Caussin & Veldman

M Paul & Bolser

Basically I have it as a 50% chance that he gets cut.

A lock.

Best special teams player on our team (Waiting to see Hayward)

Experience at FB

Experience at WR

We ran a WR screen to him against NE.

How many 3rd string guys bring this much to a team?

A thought that has crept into my mind after watching the NE game is if the 'Skins might cut Moss, keep only 5 WR's, and have Paul as a hybrid WR/TE to open up roster slots elsewhere.  Wouldn't shock me.

I agree with this, including keeping only 5 WRs with the option of Paul there.

Nothing like a SAN thread to bring Rufus out of hiding.

Outside of special teams, he serves no value whatsoever to the team.  That has been confirmed this preseason with his blocking being minus on the DC9 Scale of Hardness.
