The Everything 118th Congress Thread

What makes this great was Kevin walking around like he was destined for the position before hand, giving interviews on what he would do when speaker, not if.

So...how do we get Jefferies as Speaker, instead? I'm not a math major, but it looks like he has the most votes three rounds in a row.

You don't unless Republicans start voting for him or voting present.

The magic number is 218 – kind of.

A candidate requires votes from a majority of lawmakers who are voting to be elected speaker. That means if all 435 members are present and voting, the number of votes needed is 218.

But lawmakers can decide to skip the vote, or vote "present," which reduces the vote threshold needed to win the speakership. Speakers Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., and John Boehner, R-Ohio, both won the speakership without reaching 218 votes

He's ruined more GOP careers than the few loud ones he created.

Right. They'd have better luck finding 4-10 moderate Republicans (no clue who) with one willing to nominate another and all the Dems supporting the Rep with those few Republicans.

The 19 hardliners are delusional.

Every Dem should be on all political news talking about how arch conservatives think they have to "save the country by shutting down the country".  When they are just taking themselves out of power.

I bet McCarthy and the party raised money and supported all of them.  They all know this session is going to suck anyways.

Just crazy.

This would be far more amusing if it didn't feel like a dress rehearsal for not raising the debt ceiling later this year.

Assume there won't be actual votes on that.

Because the Dems would vote to raise it. Only way it doesn't get passed is if almost every single R votes against it.

(Or if they successfully poison it. Like, a bill to raise the ceiling and also eliminate Social Security, or some such.)
