Overview

Upside free safety with feast-or-famine tackle approach that creates inconsistencies teams will need to have corrected. Butler vacillates between punishing hitting and taking arm-tackling angles in the open field. He's average in man coverage but plays with instincts and catch disruption from zone. He might see an uptick in his future value if he can get his run tackling solidified. Butler's outstanding work as a gunner adds to his draft day value and likelihood of sticking around the league.

Strengths

Absolute stud as special-teams performer.

Rang up coverage team tackle stats all four years.

Creates highlight-reel hits as gunner.

Impressive burst becomes impressive play speed.

Alley runner who will lay the lumber to ball-carriers.

Should be able to race from the hash over the top.

Displays a fair amount of instincts from zone.

Hard strikes to pass-catchers dislodge the ball.

Length/angles to swipe at the catch from around receiver's frame.

I like Butler. Sure he’s not gonna be the buffalo nickel but this allows Kam or maybe even McCain too. We don’t have the fastest guys in the secondary even at corner and need someone who can run. I don’t think comparing him to Apke is fair until we see how he tackles.

Raw speed Safety with poor tackling. Sounds like Troy Apke part 2.

I thought this write up was interesting:

Particularly the last part, PRO COMPARISON: Darrick Forrest.

So..Apke, Forrest, Butler. Good to know that Washington has a type.

The team has seen something in Hudson to keep him around.  I’m a fan of his but at the olb spot where he can run free and chase the ball.  Not sure how he’d figure in the BN…I guess anyway to get him on the field.  He’s a tremendous athlete at lb

He literally played the Nickel spot in college. He was the roll down safety/backer that they call the Viper at Michigan.

Went looking for the article about it and found this snippet.

Obviously biased coming from his coach but wow…what a comp.  Not sure what he’s missin to be on the field more.  Everytime I see him out there he’s around the ball making plays
