Just do it already. I don’t even use Twitter. But, you don’t have to announce you are leaving, you just do it.

That's a pretty snotty reply.  Elon would be proud.

The 30% thing is not new or

a secret. It’s in the agreement when you publish an app. You agree to it. There’s a lawsuit going on dating back to 2020 with the creators of fortnight and the department of Justice is considering joining against apple. Maybe. Npr did segments on it.

It’ll be an interesting case and I think both sides make compelling arguments.

but it’s not a secret.

also I think people with iPhones probably prefer the strict censorship rules of the App Store. I know I enjoy that there’s at least a level of standard required to have access to their network of people/devices. Maybe I’m over estimating how many feel that way though 🤷‍♂️

Also if you take what he actually says and juxtapose it with his actions and the actual results, it seems musks view of a free internet is just one giant cesspool of trolling and chaos everywhere

I developed apps for iOS back in 2010 and this 30% fee was a thing back then lol.

If anything, developers should be happy that Apple hasn't raised the fee in 12 years.

Does apple get 30 percent from Spotify subscriptions? I’m pretty sure you sign up on Spotifies website and just login using the app, seems relatively easy to skirt the 30 percent fees.

Someone should remind Elon that free speech is more than 280 characters….

No because Spotify doesn’t allow you to sign up for a subscription in their iOS app. If you try, they give you a link to open the subscription page in your browser. From there you can sign up and pay for it, without apple taking a cut.

this is how most (competent) people get around this.

this is how Twitter would have gotten around it, if it wanted to roll out a subscription plan, when it was run by competent people.

instead it’s now run by an idiot, and I wish I could have been on the room when he asked for numbers and learned for the first time that apple took 30% of what he was expecting because he doesn’t have a ****ing clue what he’s doing 😂

I’m guessing no one around him, that does know what they’re doing, made him aware of it *before* because of some combination of:

- them not caring because he’s a complete and total asshole

- them not having time to care because of how he’s running things

- said assholeishness of owner creates environment where people are afraid to speak up for fear of appearing to not be instep with owner - so they go along with owners ideas out of fear

- they did try to say something but said owner is so arrogant he didn’t listen to the

you know - all the basic reasons why running a company this way is categorically considered an awful idea 😂

Kinda like people threatening to go to war with Apple from their iPhones...

No doubt.  I guess I’d consider that moreso.

Yea, I guess that was my point, it shouldn’t take a lot of work to get around the 3 percent fee.

Edit: Was Musk the one complaining about the 30 percent fees? I thought that was just something people were pointing too as delaying the Twitter blue rollout…

It’s 30%, or 15% on subscriptions I guess, and no everyone’s known this. It’s been a thing since the App Store launched. Over a decade.

but super genius tech guy was completely unaware

and also apparently unaware of how you should resolve conflict. Instead taking to Twitter to try to bully apple 😂

Brianna Wu's point 5 above is probably what scares Apple and other companies the most about dealing with "Elno".

that's what I was thinking. If Apple has a TOS for an app to be available on their products, it's because they don't want to get in trouble if say Twitter unregulated becomes the dark web with drug sales, child porno, and other ****.

Europe, US, Wherever. A company worth hundreds of billions or more would be smart to protect themselves and require a Twitter or whoever to meet the bare min requirements,

Yeah many companies do this, you can use the app, but any monetary transaction (i.e. signing up for a subscription) needs to happen via web to avoid paying the apple tax.

I don’t know why it would delay the rollout. Every other app developer has figured out how to deal with it - either provide a link to open in your browser or accept the fee. The idea twitter would delay a rollout to figure it out is baffling to me. This is known information and has been for over a decade. NPR’s Planet money has done podcasts on it. There’s been and continues to be lawsuits over it.

the idea that a major tech company that’s been around for a while is having difficult figuring out w 10+ year policy on a platform that reps well over 50% of tablets and somewhere around 50% of phones, is hilarious.

to the point that it must simply not be true. Something else is delaying the rollout.

but it was brought up because musk tweeted yesterday about it. It’s on the previous page. And he acted like he was revealing something. He referred to it as a secret. And that’s what started the conversation in this thread - me pointing out it’s not a secret and its been in place for a long time.

along with musks baffling stupidity, something else is going on to delay the rollout.

Wonder if it might have something to do with laying off or firing the majority of the people who understand how the whole system architecture is constructed, and then expecting random new features to just work, like some goddamn Staples easy button.

I’d like to point out to everyone that isn’t a developer (whether software or infrastructure or anything else)

that yes we are often asked if there’s just a button that will do <whatever idiotic thing they think should just magically happen>
and if not, can we just make said button.

im dead serious.
