It’s up there with BDSM and group sex in terms of what people are fantasizing about the most (see Justin Lehmiller’s book Tell Me What You Want: The Science of Sexual Desire and How It Can Help You Improve Your Sex Life for more) — but the difference between those things and anal is that people are actually having anal sex and not just dreaming about it. A 2017 survey conducted by SKYN Condoms asked 3,037 adults about their sex lives and found that 36% of Millennials are having anal sex where the woman is penetrated and 15% are having anal sex where the male is penetrated.
