Plus Guam, Puerto Rico, the US Virgin Islands, and DC. Members of the Freedom Convoy gathered in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada beginning in late January to protest COVID-19 mask and vaccine mandates. The group was originally formed to contest vaccine mandates and quarantining for truckers crossing the U.S.-Canada border but grew into a protest against all COVID-related mandates and restrictions in the country. At the time, both the Canadian and American governments had granted brief exemptions for unvaccinated truckers crossing the border in order to keep supply chains running smoothly. Those exemptions ended in mid and late January, respectively, prompting unvaccinated truckers and others to protest. The Canadian Trucking Alliance and the American Trucking Associations said more than 16% of the 160,000 big rig drivers who regularly cross the border would be affected by the vaccine-or-quarantine mandate. The convoy eventually left Canada and some of its members have crossed into the U.S. to further spread its message. In the permit application—first filed back on February 18 for the “Stage of Freedom” event with the National Park Service and later obtained by The Daily Beast—Kyle Sefcik, the rally organizer, touted that upwards of 3,000 individuals might “hopefully” attend the event. On its website, the AFCLF, a conservative fundraising organization, has raised over $1.6 million for the People’s Convoy. Pamela Milacek, executive director of the AFCLF, has active warrants out for her arrest for probation violations related to her pleading guilty in two cases involving fraud and exploitation of an elderly person, Matthew Hawkins, the criminal deputy district clerk for Collin County District Clerk’s Office, told FreightWaves on Friday. “Just to note though, since she received deferred adjudication, she has not actually been convicted at this time,” Hawkins said. In Texas, deferred adjudication is a special form of judge-ordered probation that permits a defendant to accept responsibility for a crime without an actual conviction being placed on his or her record.
