If only Bernie Sanders hadn't thrown the 2021 VA Governor's election to Youngkin, then all those smart, enlightened swing voters in VA wouldn't have much such a horrible choice that they had no way of knowing could possibly turn out poorly.

****ing Bernie.

RICHMOND — Gov. Glenn Youngkin flew to New York last week to meet privately with GOP megadonors in Manhattan, a move that underscores recent hints that the Republican is considering a run for president in 2024.

The day-long visit, which was not listed on Youngkin’s public calendar and included a trio of national TV interviews, comes as the new governor prepares to headline his first out-of-state political event since taking office, with an appearance next week in Nebraska. He also has begun speaking more often about the needs of “Americans,” not just “Virginians,” and has subtly changed how he answers questions about whether he will seek the White House.

Youngkin, a multimillionaire and former private equity executive, used to respond that he is solely focused on his new job in Virginia. More recently, he has begun saying he is “humbled” that so many people “request” that he run.

Youngkin administration warns feds new wind areas could hurt commercial fisheries

Gov. Glenn Youngkin’s administration told federal officials that large areas of ocean off Virginia being considered as potential offshore wind sites could cause “millions of dollars of negative impact to Virginia’s commercial fishing industries.”

“While supportive of the growth of the offshore wind industry and the opportunities for the commonwealth to provide critical support to the offshore wind industry supply chain and become a key hub for future development, we must ensure any future leasing areas do not detrimentally impact or restrict maritime commerce or commercial navigation,” wrote officials in a June 27 letter to the Bureau of Energy Ocean Management.

The letter was signed by Acting Secretary of Natural and Historic Resources Travis Voyles, Secretary of Commerce and Trade Caren Merrick, Secretary of Transportation W. Sheppard Miller, Secretary of Veterans and Defense Affairs Craig Crenshaw and Secretary of Labor Bryan Slater.

The administration’s comments came in response to a BOEM proposal for a 4 million acre Central Atlantic call area where the federal government could auction off lease areas to offshore wind developers. The public comment period on the draft call area closed Tuesday.

While recreational fishers have seen some promise in the artificial reefs that can develop around the bases of turbines, offshore wind farms can prevent commercial fishers from operating because of their larger vessels’ inability to navigate through installations, restrictions on equipment use or impacts to marine populations.

In Virginia, scallop, surf clam and other fishers have voiced concerns about the impacts massive new offshore wind areas could have on their industry.

Numerous groups and agencies from states around the proposed Central Atlantic call area submitted comments to BOEM asking for changes to the proposed areas amd continued review of where wind turbines should be sited.

The Mid-Atlantic Fishery Management Council and New England Fishery Management Council, which have jurisdiction over 93 species in federal waters from Maine to North Carolina, urged BOEM to exclude areas with notable fisheries from wind development and warned that expansion of offshore wind along the East Coast is occurring too rapidly.

President Joe Biden’s administration has set a goal of developing 30 gigawatts of offshore wind by 2030.

Youngkin fumbles on same-sex marriage status in Virginia law

Gov. Glenn Youngkin in an interview Sunday wouldn’t say whether he would move to protect the legality of same-sex marriage in Virginia if the conservative-leaning U.S. Supreme Court overturned a ruling protecting it nationwide.

During an appearance on CBS’s "Face the Nation," Youngkin was asked whether he would take any steps to codify same-sex marriage in Virginia law. Youngkin said: “We actually do protect same-sex marriage in Virginia. That's the law in Virginia.”

Virginia’s constitution, however, includes an amendment banning same-sex marriage, which the state's voters approved in a 2006 referendum. If the U.S. Supreme Court overturned its 2015 decision in Obergefell v. Hodges, unions between LGBTQ+ couples would no longer be recognized by the state. Same-sex couples account for about 1 in every 26 marriages in Virginia.

"Either he is ignorant of the status of gay marriage in Virginia or chose to lie,” said Sen. Adam Ebbin, D-Alexandria, who introduced a resolution for a new constitutional amendment to repeal the language in the Virginia Constitution. A GOP-controlled House subcommittee blocked it earlier this year.

Youngkin appointee who defended Confederate statues resigns from board

Ann Hunter McLean, a historian who defends Confederate statues and asserts that slavery was not the primary cause of the Civil War, has resigned from the Virginia Board of Historic Resources over what a spokesman for Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R) called a disagreement about priorities.

“After discussion about our Administration’s goals and priorities and Dr. McLean’s, Dr. McLean resigned,” Youngkin spokeswoman Macaulay Porter said via text message. The resignation was effective Monday. Youngkin had appointed McLean, the former head of a Christian school, to the board in mid-July.

In an email Wednesday to The Washington Post in response to questions about her resignation, McLean struck a defiant tone, saying that Virginians should examine their “actual full and honest history — not a simplified version used for political reasons. I am excited to be completely free now to share that history with people and to speak up to stop the destruction of our shared cultural heritage.”

After the social justice protests of 2020, when Richmond began removing monuments to Confederate icons such as Gens. Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson, McLean gave numerous interviews in which she lauded Lee’s character and complained that Virginia’s heritage was “under attack.”

Six months into Youngkin’s term, 49 percent of Virginians approve of the way the political newcomer is governing the state, while 38 percent disapprove, according to the Commonwealth Poll conducted by the L. Douglas Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs at Virginia Commonwealth University.

You know, for somebody who claims that people's publicly expressed racism shouldn't be held against them, ....

He sure does seem to be appointing a lot of people who have publicly expressed racism.

So many, in fact, that it really suggests that he's selecting appointees because of their racism.

Well, he’s choosing from republicans in a southern state.  I think he’s be hard pressed to find someone without a little bit of confederate love in them.
