That's why I was expecting them to look at a RB, WR or even DB via draft that was returner. Will be another interesting August decision.

“Misdirection”
Ron values position flex too much to not have a few RB/WR/DBs be able to return. I don’t think he’ll keep a guy that can only return and provide no real value elsewhere

Looking at the guys likely to make the roster, I don’t see a return guy. Danny Johnson is on the outside looking in with the additions of Roberts and St Juste. I don’t see it in the WR group. I know Humphries can do punts, but he’s not going to be dynamic back there. From what I can tell, Dazz Newsome did a lot of the punt returns for UNC, so I’m not sure that Brown has that experience.

Carter was signed as a punt returner for the reasons you've mentioned here....He's been in the league for a few years now and is a good pr. KDawg
It’s certainly possible they keep six WR + Carter. If they designate a return man as a specialist like they would a long snapper or kicker or punter than you need 4 slots for specs. Theres no reason they can’t do that. Maybe it’s two QBs (Fitz/Heinicke) with Montez on PS and Allen PUP due to a slow progression back.
Est.1974
I don’t think Carter is a good enough returner to warrant a designated place just for that. Never got a return TD?

I think that was what he was getting at - no one else on the roster fits as a sure fire, proven returner, and the position flexibility of some of our guys allows us to carry Carter. 2 hours ago, KDawg said: It’s certainly possible they keep six WR + Carter. With the new CBA rules, they also have the 2 additional roster spots now (55 on roster/48 active), so it makes that decision that much easier. Edit: the 2 additional roster spots are for PS only (can be called up twice and then demoted again, more than that and they have to have their PS contract terminated and a FA contract worked out), so probably should ignore the above (thx ts) 2 hours ago, UK SKINS FAN 74 said: I don’t think Carter is a good enough returner to warrant a designated place just for that. Never got a return TD? Game of inches... I’ll take the guy that adds an extra yard or two per return (especially with the 2 additional roster spots). This is not technically how it works. The official roster is still only 53 players. You can promote up to 2 players per week from the practice squad to the active roster, to increase the total amount of players on the roster for that game to 54 or 55. But they go back down to the PS the next week. There are also limitations to how often you can do this per player before they are exposed to waivers. So yes, the rule does offer some additional flexibility, but it’s not as simple as just getting two extra roster spots.

If there is a legit returner released they could look to add him Bringing up Montez reminds me, along with being a probable PS designee for QB they may be considering a distant extra TE option

I do think we’ll see the 2 extra active players (48 instead of 46) potentially play a role in this regard, but certainly not to the degree I was thinking.

Beginning with the 2020 regular season, the Active List limit shall be increased from forty-six players per Club to forty-eight players per Club; provided, however, that such a Club’s Active List includes a minimum of eight players whose primary playing position is Center, Guard or Tackle (collectively, “Offensive Lineman”). terpfan
With inspiration from @JamesMadisonSkins in the Free Agency thread, I got crazy and pulled in contracts from Spotrac to keep track of the projected salary cap number for the final 53. The image is really small so may be hard to see, but I have us with just under $14 mil in cap space if we cut down the roster to the 53 guys I'm projecting. Feel free to check my math and make sure I'm not missing something obvious... This shouldn't be significantly different depending on which 53 you select, unless you're doing something crazy... most of the guys at the bottom of the depth chart will have similar cap hits. But this should help if we add any other significant contracts to see where we're at afterwards. 3
London Kev
It's probably not that important, but you've got the Oregon DE, Jalen Jelks down as Jalen Jenks. Thanks for doing this by the way.

method man
If Patterson makes the team and has reliable hands, I’d love to see him get a shot as the kick returner. With his frame and low center of gravity, I can see him being good at it a la Sproles

Doesn’t look like he did it at all in college... but I don’t think kick returner is all that difficult of a thing to pick up (as opposed to punt returner). And I do prefer having a battering ram RB type in that role compared to a WR or DB. As a side note, I was able to find some info about him playing in kick coverage, so he is at least familiar with and open to playing specials. That should help him make the team regardless. evmiii
With the circus that we have had in PR over the last few years, I can live with someone who can consistently catch the ball. Any yards after a successful catch is just gravy.
