Toney is a LB even though he’s listed as a DE 2. We don’t have anyone proven behind Young/Sweat (though at least Toohill and JSW have some experience) 3. Settle and Allen are FAs next year, Payne and Io the year after. 4. We play mostly nickel, so 2 LBs vs 4 Dline on the field 5. 3 deep at each position going into camp would leave you with 9 LBs and 12 Dlinemen

Fine to leave him off for now.  I had to do some extra research on David Bada because Spotrac originally did not have him listed, even though the WFT website did. It would seem he is part of the International Pathways Program, so while he does count against the cap, he actually doesn’t count against the 90 man roster limit. So technically, I believe we do still have one roster spot available after signing McCain.

So you effectively have a full set of reserve backups for each position. Bada doesn't count against the ninety, so it's more like 9/13 and 6/9. I could also see the team keeping only 5 LBs if it needed room elsewhere (say OL) on the 53.

Jericho
Way early Final 53 projection. Obviously injuries will happen and the rookies are a complete unknown. But we're probably looking at something like  Offense (26) QB (3): Fitzpatrick, K. Allen, Heinicke Comments: Two to three spots in theory, but I think this position has been locked in for some time. The only real question is who is the game day back up for Fitzpatrick? RB (4): Gibson, McKissic, Barber, Patterson Comments: Three to four spots. Gibson and McKissic seem like locks. Patterson in part because he's young and has some upside and the rest of the competition is pretty weak. Barber is very uninspiring, but I suspect is the player many fans wish would be gone, but never is. Maybe Lamar Miller can bump him if he has anything left? WR (6): McLaurin, Samuel, Humphries, D. Brown, AGG, C. Sims Comments: Five to six spots. Was tempted to squeeze in Harmon. The only real locks are McLaurin, Samuel, and D. Brown. I feel Humphries should make it, he's only two plus seasons removed from getting a huge contract. So he should still have something left. But his contract is pretty minimal. AGG was drafted as a developmental guy, so while he struggled in year one, I can give him something of a pass. The team clearly likes Cam Sims enough to tender him at two million, so that should be good enough to crack the top 6. Harmon or Milne are the guys that can push their way on this roster in training camp TE (3): L. Thomas, Bates, Reyes? Comments: Three spots. Thomas is the starter. Bates should easily make the roster. But the third? I'm highly skeptical Reyes is really going to be good enough this quickly, but the rest of the competition looks pretty darn weak. OL (10): Leno, Moses, Scherff, Flowers, Roullier, Lucas, Schwitzer, Cosmi, Charles, Ismael Comments: Nine to ten spots. The first eight spots look pretty locked in. Charles I think would have to really play himself off. That's already nine. I'm not sure where the team puts Ismael, but they may like him enough to keep him. While the other are flawed, all of Christian, Sharpe, and Martin spent 2020 on the Washington 53 and Larsen has similarly spent the last several years on someone's 53. So there's depth here.  Defense (24) DL (9): Allen, Payne, Sweat, C. Young, Settle, Ioannidis, Smith-Williams, Bradley-King, Toney Comments: Eight to nine spots. The first six are likely locks, but the last three are not. Toney is likely a swing DE/LB, so that can help both spots. But others can certainly push Smith-Williams or Bradley-King or even Toney LB (5): J. Davis, Bostic, Holcomb, Hudson, Mayo Comments: Five to six spots. This is a thin and weak position. As the team has moved to more 4-2-5 formations, keeping more LBs is less important. Also, if Toney can swing down here it'll help. But there's a real lack of guys you feel you need to make room for. Davis, Bostic, and Holcomb should be locks and I don't see who beats out Hudson. But that last spot is wide open. DB (10): W. Jackson, Fuller, St-Juste, Moreland, Roberts, McCain, Collins, Curl, Forrest, Reaves Comments: Probably ten players in some combo here, with the team likely leaning more heavy on safety than in years part. The corners seem very likely, though one could try and push Roberts. Safety is a bit more open. Forrest is likely, but not a hard lock on the 53. And Reaves, Everett, and even Apke are likely fighting for one spot.  Specialists (3) Hopkins, Way, Cheeseman

Yeah I’m starting to wonder if there is indeed a spot for a designated returner on the roster, whether it be Carter or someone else. Isaiah Wright intrigues me a bit in this role as well - he had 5 return TDs over his college career and flashed some as a WR last year.  I liked the extra CB depth that Danny Johnson would have supplied, but especially with the signing of McCain we have so many good and versatile DBs now I don’t think keeping an 11th one is really necessary.

Bostic is a veteran leader type while Hudson enters year two with some upside. I would call our LB corp "young and somewhat raw" especially if Toney makes the team while the upside for this group is definitely there. I believe that's why the coaches picked them all, coachable upside with good athleticism.

Especially if they want to keep 4 RBs for example... 3 QBs, 4 RBs, 7 WRs (one being a returner), 3 TEs, 10 OLs is 27 offensive players... that probably isn’t happening.
