Is he Ryan Anderson part ll as far as skills and body type...???? A tweener so to speak?

I think he's more explosive than Anderson. Anderson is just kind of... there. I don't mean that in a bad way. He's a decent player that can play multiple roles but he doesn't have any real defining traits other than "capable". Toney is more explosive. Especially with the first step.

So... kind of?

OK, Anderson just didn't seem to fit here, anywhere we put him. Hopefully Shaka fits in somewhere, even as a hybrid type that moves around...would be great if he could cover backs when not rushing the passer.

By the way, for you old school guys, he has the same last name as my all time favorite 76er, Andrew Toney...aka "The Boston Strangler".

Andersen is slooowwwww. Proof that determination and technique can overcome physical limitations somewhat, but his lack of speed was why he always had a low ceiling.

Hopefully the correct comparison will wind up being Dwight Freeney, who was also considered a tweener.

Freeney 2.0 would be a Juan Soto level homerun for our front office!

Another undersized or at least under-height d-line tweener, John Randle, who played for the Vikings excelled and became a perennial all pro.

Edited to add John Randle’s name.

I get it that Toney is undersized. But there is no way he should have slipped to the 7th round. And he isnt a liability against the run if he used correctly. Problem is unless one of our big dogs gets injured we will see very little of him on passing downs. He is good. But he isnt Chase or Sweat good.

His burst of the LOS is unreal!  It shows up on every play in this video.  I believe unless Kerrigan excepts a vet minimum deal Toney replaces him as a 3rd down rushing specialist and maybe more.

Toney's height and weight match with Robert Mathis (Freeney's partner in crime). That might be the more apt comparison, so I'm not complaining.

Kept hearing the edge class was weak/not deep, yet we get this dude in the 7th?  I don’t really know what to make of that...

One of the vids above mentioned Del Rio using 5 linemen - any insight here?  I believe he said against TB specifically, but considering our D got manhandled, did it work?  Did he use it in other games?  Was it an in-game response to TB beating up on us (lack of pressure, inability to stop the run)?  Also recall talk that we went to man that game... was that linked to putting another player on the line?  So many questions, lol.

I just keep thinking about the Giants super bowl team when they were overloading the line with speed rushers. Sweat and Chase are both big enough to handle interior Olines on specific packages. If they're hand in dirt spread wide with Allen, who's a top 10 passer at the DT position, then guys like Toney could be blitzing also.

Lot of options for speed guys.

I could also see him fitting into select situations as a blitzer when we use the 46 defense that Rivera earned his bones in.

Imagine the havoc and oline confusion trying to block a lineup in a passing situation with Chase, Montez, Payne, Ioannidis, Jamin Davis and Shaka Toney all lined up on the ball— not knowing who was coming, who was backing off or whether it was going to be an all out jail break to the qb!

Buddy Ryan’s venerable 46 defense and it’s 21st century variants.

Maybe a rover or roving LB on passing down or even used on 1st and 2nd downs against the rush.  JDR has some new tools/pieces to work with.  I'm sure he and RR are giddy with what they can do with the D now that they have Toney and others in the secondary along with King.

Toney looked fantastic covering TEs at the senior bowl. I really hope that's what we saw in him. Let him play SAM and be a threat as an extra blitzer.

It will be interesting to see what the LB depth chart looks like week 1. Has Rivera or JDR come out and said what position Jamin will play?

Jamin Davis at Will, Bostic at MLB and a rotation of Holcomb/Toney at SAM?

I get more excited about the idea of a Holcomb (WILL) - Davis (MIKE) - Toney (SAM) lineup.

I think I heard Rivera say Davis will start off at SLB but might end up eventually playing MLB. He'll definitely be a 3 down LB and be in on Nickel and Dime as well.

Any lineup that has Bostic starting is a major thumbs down from this guy.

Music to my ears. I think Toney makes the 53 if he shows flashes at LB

No doubt he does!  This is music to my ears.  Again, one can see the versatility in Toney.  Burst and quick first step.  He reads and diagnosis well.  The more I look at these last round draftees the more impressed I am with them, RR and Co. and our scouting team.  Wow!

I love how when Rivera drafts 7th rounders, every single time, he fully expects them to be major contributors and starters.

Everyone else is like, "we really don't expect anything from a 7th rounder".

But Ron is like, "I see a potential starter in him".

So far he's been right.

And this season, he's continued that attitude. Rivera's got both the bold expectation, as well as the skill, to find jewels in the 7th Round.

Hadn’t heard that about Toney’s coverage, that’s awesome to hear.  Goes against my thinking, but I’ve now read from a couple people that Holcomb actually played Mike and Bostic SLB...🤷‍♂️

Yeah, heard the same.  He’s got some learning to do, but he’s going to be a great upgrade in nickel.

Amen brother.

JDR said that he plans to eventually cross train Toney at both DE and LB.

That is exciting... and not just because I called it :)

Situational rusher transitioning to LB gives this guy a great avenue to making the team and sticking around.  As I’ve said before, I think being accustomed to taking on blockers (something our other backers haven’t proven themselves in), along with his long arms, speed and burst make him a (potentially) good fit at backer.
