I present you with Exhibit A: The best player in next year's draft. Yes, including Lawrence and Fields and anyone else. This guy is an absolute animal. 

 

6-6, 325. He moves like a 260 pounder. He has active hands and feet. Plays with leverage at contact point, though he can find himself high at the snap he correct it with his strikes. His feet never, ever, ever stop moving. Once he gets a hold of a defender he sticks to them like glue.

 

He passes assignments extremely well when they cross stunt or stick. His head is always on a swivel and he's extremely intelligent.

 

He gets to the second level. His pass sets are clean.

 

He makes Andrew Thomas look like a chew toy for a Great Dane.

 

My current grade:

Athleticism: 1.8 (in scale for linemen)

Size: 2

Strength: 1.8

Technique: 1.8

Intelligence: 1.8

Total: 9.2

 

Expect my grading system to get tweaked and moved around a bit, too. Trying it for now. Will likely abandon it once I realize how hard it is to actually put that thing into practice and use it for each player and figure out a good way to scale the grades.

Alex Leatherwood. 6-6, 322. Alabama kid. 

 

He is almost the exact same size as Sewell, but he carries it a little different. Seems a bit more compact and stout than Sewell, even in his play style.

 

He isn't as balanced as Sewell and loses his man a bit more often, but he recovers extremely well. He has a good mind to shuffle his feet on running plays as his back gets closer to the hole and he continues his wall technique. He is also an athletic football player who is absolutely battle tested. Climbs to the second level well, constantly is looking for work, has a killer one hand stab. He plays a little higher than Sewell does, but he did a great job against 1st round draft choice K'Lavon Chaisson in the LSU footage here. 

 

My Grade so far:

Athleticism: 1.6 (in scale for linemen)

Size: 2

Strength: 1.8

Technique: 1.7

Intelligence: 1.7

Total: 8.8

Samuel Cosmi. 6-6, 295.

 

Improved significantly last season. Perhaps he's more comfortable on the left side. 

 

Active hands and feet and plays with great anticipation. He's lighter in the ass than the first two behemoths, but he's still a 6-6 road grader. He gets his hands on you and you're probably going for a fun little ride somewhere that you don't want to go as long as he remains engaged. He gets a touch lazy with his drive blocks at times, unlike the previous two LTs I've reviewed, where he doesn't block through the whistle and his guy comes off and makes a play, but that's a nit pick. Over the two seasons he clearly made a lot of positive steps, so it's not out of the realm of possibility for him to improve even further his senior season. 

 

One bad habit I saw more in the 2018 film, but once in awhile you see in any of the 2019 stuff he has up... he sometimes puts his head down and doesn't see what he hits.

Size: 1.85

Strength: 1.7

Technique: 1.5

Intelligence: 1.6

If we’re bad next season, Who do you guys think we’ll be in competition with to draft Trevor Lawrence?

First game is 2019, second is 2018. LT in both.

 

Walker Little. 6-7, 304.

 

The immediate negative I notice, in both 2018 and 2019, is that he has a bad tendency to over anticipate defender pre snap burst and he oversets to them. In the 2018 film he wasn't as good at recovering, but in 2019 he looks much more fluid correcting that mistake and getting back to the block. There are also plays where he gives up way too much ground in pass protection because he plays extremely high. His footwork isn't nearly as refined as Leatherwood, Sewell or Cosmi. He stops his feet on contact at times. 

 

However, he has some good athleticism, size and strength. He has a lot of room for improvement going into this coming season, but his body of work is clear that he is a reliable OT. But I love how light on his feet he is. There is a goal line play against Northwestern where he feathers out left to pick up and outside rusher... and it's beautiful. He just has such quick feet. Getting those things continued movement and improving his pre-snap anticipation will go a very long way.

Size: 1.9

Strength: 1.7

Technique: 1.25

Intelligence: 1.5

Total: 8.1

Next years OT class could be better then this years if Cosmi, Mays and Jalen Mayfield continue to improve.  You could have another 6 in the 1st Rd.

I’m not convinced he would come out so early. He’s an absolute monster and there’s only so much you can accomplish at the FCS level ... but would he come out as a RS-So and be the 3rd QB in the draft or stay another year and come out as a R-Jr in 2022 and be the sure fire #1

FWIW Matt Miller is ALL over Lance. He loves him. Thinks he comes out next year. But R-So is early to come out. It’s one thing to be Dwayne haskins after leading OSU to 50 TDs and another as an FCS superstar.

 

I think Miller has Lance above Fields

Seems to be. I tested my OT rankings with Thomas, Wirfs and Wills.

 

Thomas was around 8.4, Wills 8.25, Wirfs 8.1

 

So as of right now that puts them 3rd, 4th and 5th respectively with the current OT crop. Which seems right to me. 
 

So while I like where it’s ranking guys I have to figure out how the numbers jive with overalls and such.
