2020 ES GM's Mock Draft....done...

I've got 4 remaining undrafted players at this juncture.  I expect Joe Bachie to get drafted at some point, and probably Josiah Coatney.  Knipp and Berry were odd late-round fliers that I never assumed would be drafted.  I'll be interested in what they make of themselves after the draft.

Ok, so how the actual draft played out vs my picks for the Texans... little strange

Texans take Blacklock at 40.
It was a coin flip between Blacklock and Taylor for me, I took the latter (he ends up going 41st).

Texans trade 57 for Cooks.
I take Madabuike (he went 71st).

Texans take Greenard at 90.
My ‘target’, Greenard goes right before my pick - that was a kick in the nuts.  I take Hunt.

Post roster lock, the picks changed - Texans now had 2 4ths.

I traded up for a second 4th.

Texans then went OT (Heck), corner (Reid) and then receiver (Coulter in the 5th)

After taking an OT/G last rd, I went corner, then receiver also.

Anywho...

Total pick differential for me is +5.  Not great, but I feel pretty good about it.

40 Johnathon Taylor - actual 41

57 Justin Madabuike - actual 71

90 Robert Hunt - actual 39

111 Reggie Robinson - 123

159 Isaiah Hodgins - actual - 207

240 Bryce Huff - UDFA (Jets)

250 Simon Stepaniak - actual 209

2020 ES Mock Draft Results (Baltimore Ravens) / ACTUAL RESULTS

#28 Denzel Mims - WR - Baylor / #59 New York Jets (-31)

Nearly went C. Ruiz here

#47 Neville Gallimore - DL - Oklahoma / #82 Dallas Cowboys (-35)

Would have been a WR if I hadn't taken Mims

#60 Clyde Edwards-Helaire - RB - LSU / #32 Kansas City Chiefs (28)

This was the plan all along. Surprised he went so early

#92 Troy Dye - LB - Oregon / #132 Minnesota Vikings (-40)

#106 Damien Lewis - OG - LSU / #69 Seattle Seahawks (37)

#129 Amik Robertson - CB - LA Tech / #139 Las Vegas Raiders (-10)

Pretty close. Really like this player

#143 Tyre Phillips - OL - Mississippi State / #106 Baltimore Ravens (37)

#183 Dalton Keene - TE - Virginia Tech / #101 New England Patriots (82)

I like Keene, but never expected him to go this early

#225 Kenny Robinson, Jr. - S - XFL / #152 Carolina Panthers (73)

Cheat code. Robinson wasn't listed on many big boards since he wasn't in college

#238 Trevon Hill - EDGE - Miami / Undrafted 💩 (-17)

Dart throw. I missed

+124 overall

Didn't do as well as I expected, but the back nine saved me.

Recapping the Kurt Cousins' led Minnesota Vikings Draft

Rd. 1 #22 - Kristian Fulton - CB LSU - Tennessee #61

Rd. 1 #25 - Grant Delpit - CB LSU    - Browns #44

Rd. 2 #58 - Shane Lemieux - G - ORE - Giants #150

Rd. 3 #84 - Antonio Gandy-Golden - WR - Liberty - Redskins #142

Rd. 3 #105 - Julian Okwara - EDGE - ND - Lions #67

Rd. 4 #132 - Benito Jones DT - MIS - UD

Rd. 5 #155  - Quintez Cephus - WR - WIS - Lions #166

Rd. 6 #205 - Kenny Willekes - EDGE - MSU - VIKINGS #225

Rd. 7 #219 - Anthony Gordon - QB - WSU  - ID

Rd. 7 #253 - Jake Hansen - IOL - ORE - GB #208

I don't even wanna add it up. I got killed on my first three. At least I nailed Kenny WIllekes in the 6th and technically Minny went QB in the 7th at 244, just not the one I thought they would.

That's an excellent draft friend. No need to hang your head in the least. :)

Recapping Browns draft

#10 Javon Kinlaw - DT / #14 - 49ers (-4)

#33 Erza Cleveland - OT / #58 - Vikings (-25)

#74 Malik Harrison - LB / #98 - Ravens (-24)

#115 Antonio Gibson - RB / #66 - Redskins (+49)

#187 Khalid Kareem - DE / #147 - Bengals (+40)

#244 Jared Mayden - S / UDFA (-11)

Final result +25, not bad.  Top 3 picks I got in the correct round and Gibson and Kareem went a full round + earlier.  I'm kicking myself because I was between Darnell Mooney and Mayden for #244 and went Mayden.  Mooney ends up going #173 in the 5th.  I listened to Daniel Jeremiah on that one who thought Mayden would go in the 5th or 6th 🙄.

I decided to double-analyze this year's draft.  Once where I compare the values of our picks versus where they went in the real draft, and once where I compare the values of the real picks versus where they went in our draft.  I then took the difference between the two to see who did the best compared to their real life counterpart.

Eat your heart out, Gutekunst.  NFL GMs liked my draft more than random people on the internet liked yours!

Thanks for taking the time to do this.

I usually do a similar comparison but haven't had time yet this year. Hopefully I'll be able to soon. The algorithm I've used is fairly simple. I take the Jimmy Johnson values of each team's mock pick and compare them to the values of the actual picks. The total for each team is then divided by the number of picks to get an average value. If mock players aren't actually picked, I put them at pick number 256.

My draft was fairly decent. I took a chance on taking Xavier McKinney in round 1 but he wasn't taken until early in round 2. However, my 2nd round pick, Jalen Reagor, was taken by the Eagles in round 1. Yay me. My best pick difference wise was Jordyn Brooks. He was taken by the Seahawks with pick 27 and I took him in round 3 at pick 103.

I blew it on A.J. Green at pick 146. He wasn't drafted and will certainly lower my score substantially.

I've been bored, so I got the ES GM Draft results from @goskins10 from 2016-2020 and have been putting them all together in a single excel file. If there's interest, I want to assign an actual value to players, starting from the ES Mock and continuing year-to-year. It'll be based on the following (or something simliar, if anybody has better suggestions):

image.thumb.png.dcb62b65e0c2cee49075492204095e37.png

A- The difference between where the player was drafted in the mock vs real draft

B- Round player was drafted in mock draft

C- Points for a player selected in the same overall slot as the real draft

D- Points for being selected by the same team as the real draft

E- Points lost for selecting a player who isn't drafted in real draft

F- Points for selecting offensive/defensive rookie of the year

G- Points for player making the All-Rookie team

H- Points for selecting offensive/defensive player of the year

I- Points for player making the All-Pro team

J- Points for each Pro Bowl selection player gets

K- Points for player being named league MVP

L- Points for player being named Super Bowl MVP

M- Point for each game played

N- Points for making it to the Hall of Fame (irrelevant until years from now)

Thoughts?

Sounds great and thanks for the effort! I got a C in statistics so I'll leave the heavy thinking to yourself and others :)

lol

I'm just like excel. haha Still have quite a bit to finish, but if anybody knows much about formulas, I'll be happy to turn it over to get the scoring. I'm assuming there's an easier way than line-by-line.

Pff and nfl.com all rookie teams preferably. Points for team accomplishments, Sb mvp etc, 🤷🏻‍♂️ only qbs on great teams can win those, tough to add to overall draft grades. I wouldn’t value the exact spot either or same team... we don’t really have a clear objective here, but I’d suggest it should be to get the players who prove to be best, so I’m a fan of rewarding all pro etc, though obviously that is tougher with teams picking later. To do it fairly, as you did above, we’d need to assign a total value of the draft picks & then a value for the results of those picks, +/-.

For udfa, I’d take off maybe a tenth of a point per spot missed, if you had the 2nd to last pick & he didn’t get drafted, you lose .2.

I tend to go back and forth between team need, bpa, besting actual draft spots, and just drafting obscure players. Teams with QBs will probably never get to draft an mvp unless we aren’t really drafting for our team as a GM would... its 🤷🏻‍♂️... but it’s awesome. Your work makes it all that much more interesting to keep up with.

Points for making a 53 man roster are a must in any grading, imo.

You drafted Mahomes & Jackson, I believe, which means Jackson is probably playing WR for your squad? 🤔 Which means we still have Flacco starting in the league? What a travesty for the game writ large. It’s just difficult to find a balance without guidelines that are being graded, it would be nice to have a specific target we’re shooting at. I prefer the long term grades, maybe we could have a separate contest with a less ambiguous target.

Nice drafting, fwiw, that’s incredible to have grabbed both.
