At Least 34 Million Fewer Americans To Travel This Holiday Season

AAA Travel expects the vast majority of Americans to stay home this holiday season. Public health concerns and travel guidance are influencing their decisions not to travel over the year-end holidays, a period that typically sees high demand for vacations.

While AAA expects at least 34 million fewer travelers compared to last year’s holiday season, as many as 84.5 million Americans may still travel from Dec. 23 through Jan. 3, a decline in travel of at least 29%. In Tennessee, the expectation is that 2 million Tennesseans may still travel – a decline in travel of 28.4%.

Georgia ‘Santa’ Tests Positive for COVID-19 After Taking Pictures With 50 Children

A “Santa” and “Mrs. Claus” in southern Georgia may be feeling a little less jolly after contracting the coronavirus. The couple, whose names were not made public, tested positive for the virus two days after posing with 50 children for pictures at a community Christmas event in Ludowici, a small town in Long County, Georgia.

DeSantis backs sanctions against attorney who dressed as Grim Reaper on Florida beaches

Pointing to what they called “baseless” legal arguments, lawyers for Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis have urged an appeals court to sanction a Northwest Florida attorney who filed a lawsuit to try to force DeSantis to close beaches to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

DeSantis’ lawyers filed an 11-page document Friday at the 1st District Court of Appeal contending that Santa Rosa Beach attorney Daniel Uhlfelder filed a frivolous appeal after a circuit judge ruled against him in the beach-closure case.

US sets new 24-hour record of COVID-19 infections

The US set a new daily record of COVID-19 cases Tuesday, with more than 248,000 infections registered in the past 24 hours, the Johns Hopkins University virus monitor reported.

In the same period, 2,706 new deaths were recorded, according to data compiled by AFP based on information released by the university.

Coronavirus infections have increased dramatically over the past month in the United States—new daily cases have been recorded at or above the 200,000 mark in 10 of the past 13 days.

The number of hospitalized COVID patients—113,000—is also at its highest level since the beginning of the pandemic in March, according to data from the US Department of Health and Human Services.

The situation is starting to improve in the Midwest, where the number of new daily cases and hospitalizations is decreasing.

However, the epidemic is picking up steam in the Northeast and the West, according to the COVID Tracking Project, which compiles data from around the country every day.

California is especially facing a dearth of available intensive care beds. Fewer than 100 were available on Tuesday in the densely populated Los Angeles county, home to 10 million people.

The large nationwide vaccination campaign launched on Monday will have no effect on the current surge, health officials say, because it will take months before enough people are immunized to make a difference.

Covid-19 vaccines are being hoarded by rich countries — poor ones are missing out

Lost among the jubilation of America's vaccine rollout this week is an uncomfortable reality: The world's poorest countries will have to wait months and possibly years to see any doses at all.

The U.S., Canada, Britain and the European Union have pre-ordered enough Covid-19 shots to inoculate their populations several times over, subject to regulatory approvals.

In this critical game of medicine logistics — where supply is small but demand immediate and universal — campaigners and some officials accuse these wealthy nations of snapping up orders and hoarding more than they need.

The People's Vaccine Alliance, a collaboration between several aid groups including Oxfam and Amnesty International, has said that unless drastic measures are taken nearly 70 poor countries will be unable to vaccinate 90 percent of their populations next year.

A pandemic atlas: China's state power crushes COVID-19

Workers have returned to factories, students are back in the classroom and once again long lines form outside popular hot pot restaurants. In major cities, wearing a surgical mask — though no longer required outside of subways and other crowded places — has become a habit.

In many ways, normal life has resumed in China, the country where COVID-19 first appeared one year ago.

“It feels like life has recovered,” said moviegoer Meng Xiangyu, when Beijing theaters re-opened with 30 percent of their seating after a six-month hiatus. “Everything feels fresh.”

China’s ruling Communist Party has withdrawn some of the most sweeping anti-disease controls ever imposed, but remains on guard against fresh outbreaks and cases from abroad. Health authorities report a dozen or so imported cases every day.

The challenge is jobs: The economy is growing again, but the recovery is uneven. Many big manufacturers are back to normal, but consumer spending remains tepid and smaller companies are contracting or closing.

Six months ago today in the Wall Street Journal:

There Isn’t a Coronavirus ‘Second Wave’

With testing, treatments and vaccine trials ramping up, we are far better off than the media report.

by Vice President Mike Pence

In recent days, the media has taken to sounding the alarm bells over a “second wave” of coronavirus infections. Such panic is overblown. Thanks to the leadership of President Trump and the courage and compassion of the American people, our public health system is far stronger than it was four months ago, and we are winning the fight against the invisible enemy.

While talk of an increase in cases dominates cable news coverage, more than half of states are actually seeing cases decline or remain stable. Every state, territory and major metropolitan area, with the exception of three, have positive test rates under 10%. And in the six states that have reached more than 1,000 new cases a day, increased testing has allowed public health officials to identify most of the outbreaks in particular settings—prisons, nursing homes and meatpacking facilities—and contain them.

Fauci: 85 percent of the US needs to get the Covid-19 vaccine for “true herd immunity”

As the Covid-19 vaccination campaign gets underway, Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation’s leading infectious disease scientist, told Vox’s Sean Rameswaram on Tuesday that he is hoping to get as much as 85 percent of Americans vaccinated against the virus.

“If you really want true herd immunity, where you get a blanket of protection over the country ... you want about 75 to 85 percent of the country to get vaccinated,” Fauci, the longtime head of the National Institute for Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said in a live-recorded interview with Rameswaram, the host of Today, Explained. “I would say even closer to 85 percent.”

Waitress Quits Her Job On The Spot After Anti-Maskers Claim “Religious Exemption” At Denny’s

A video of a Denny’s hostess announcing that she’s quitting after a group of anti-maskers came in claiming religious exemptions to mask mandates (of which there is no such thing) went viral as every working person lived vicariously through her. The video was caught on one of the anti-masker’s cell phones and made its way onto Reddit, where people thoroughly enjoyed the woman’s demonstration of being absolutely fed up with this nonsense.

You can see the hostess making up her mind as she begins to walk away from the unwelcome customers.

"You know what I quit, I f---ing quit," she says after the man filming claims the exemption. "What is wrong with you people?"

She throws down the Denny's menus and summons her manager before nearly storming out the door, but the manager seems to convince her not to outright leave.

"Roger, I'm not working for this s--t anymore," she says to him. "These guys won't put their masks on, I'm sick of feeling like this."

The man behind the camera tries to cite the Civil Rights Act of 1964, claiming that it "says we can claim a religious exemption for not wearing a mask." This is, of course, not true, as mask mandates were not a thing prior to the current pandemic and after the pandemic of 1918 disappeared. The law also contains a specific provision saying that it "does not guarantee your entry into any particular business establishment."

This is why establishments can have a "no shirt, no shoes, no service" policy regardless of your religion's stance on wearing shirts and shoes.

While trying to avoid losing a staff member in the middle of a shift, Roger again explains to the anti-maskers that the state mandate can't be overridden by an imaginary exemption.

"I'm sorry you can't come in here without a mask, the governor said 'no mask, no service,'" he tells them.

The men again cite the Civil Rights Act incorrectly and claim that "we're not sick," again exposing the fact that anti-maskers are apparently incapable of understanding the concept of "asymptomatic." After being refused once more, they say that Denny's has lost their business.

As the men begin to leave, the hostess points out that "he's filming us" to Roger. The man filming then has to issue a parting shot, though that doesn't work out perhaps as well as he'd hoped.

"Don't believe everything the media tells you, okay?" the man says.

"Yeah, f--- yourself," the hostess recommends.

FDA allows use of over-the-counter home test for COVID-19

The first home test for COVID-19 that doesn't require a prescription will soon be on U.S. store shelves.

U.S. officials Tuesday authorized the rapid coronavirus test which can be done entirely at home. The announcement by the Food and Drug Administration represents another important — though incremental — step in U.S. efforts to expand testing options.

The agency's action allows the test to be sold in places like drugstores "where a patient can buy it, swab their nose, run the test and find out their results in as little as 20 minutes," said FDA Commissioner Stephen Hahn, in a statement.

Regulators granted emergency use for a similar test last month, but that one requires a doctor's prescription.

Initial supplies of the over-the-counter test will be limited. Australian manufacturer Ellume said it expects to produce 3 million tests next month before ramping up production over the first half of 2021.

A company spokesperson said the test will be priced around $30 and be available at pharmacies and online. The test connects to a digital app to help users interpret the results.
