A question for all you cap specialist out there, if we rid ourselves of Williams, Norman, Reed and Moses would it be right that we would have 80m plus cap space next year?.

You can throw a couple of other names on that list too, but yes we can easily have 80-100mil in cap space next year.

What we can actually do with that is another matter.

Yes. Although I hope they dont use it on Free agency. It is time for full rebuild mode. Trade down in the draft as many times as possible. And play young guys. Save the cap space for resigning your home grown talent. Like winning football teams do.

I will add that if we cut Smith we take a 16 million cap hit to do it. Although I am fine with doing that this year and getting it over with.

I somewhat agree with this - we have Scherff (and Flowers) to consider, plus our dline guys in the not-so-distant future.  Would be nice to get Smith off the books, though I doubt Allen would be willing to do so.

On the other hand, I wouldn’t begrudge them maybe adding an olineman and/or corner.  Olineman to have a positive impact on both Haskins and whichever young guy is running the ball, a corner to help out the dline (if our secondary sucks, we might have that much more trouble resigning those dline players).  I’m all for utilizing the draft and playing young guys though.

Just by eyeing it if we cut the following players we will add about $45M to our cap and we are projected to have $42M going into next year.  Keep in mind some could be traded and we could absorb more of the cap space than we would by cutting them and Reed is a wildcard with his health.  Also, we need to re-sign Scherff so that may cut into it and don't forget about the new CBA so who knows if they will raise the cap and by how much.

J Norman

T Williams

M Moses

R Kerrigan

J Reed

Honestly, Schreff is a Scott draft pick and I could see Bruce letting him walk because of that alone.  Nevermind that he's going to command somewhere around 14m per year (which I'm ok paying him). Bruce doesn't pay top dollar for players that are worth top dollar and I fully expect him on another team after the season.

I too wish we would sign him but I agree that they probably won't.  This front office has been pretty consistent in the way they do business, history shows that if we let a quality player make it to their contract year then they are hitting free agency.

It's nauseating how predictable they are.

we have a list of five people that will clear us 80 million or more.  Yeah, we don't pay top dollar

Odd... I thought Spence was playing pretty well.

I would be fine with that as well. Our cap should be pretty easy to work around with Smith's massive contract coming off the books, Norman and Reed only counting for 4.5 mil on the cap in dead money (vs close to 30) and Trent not coming back. Smith will still be around for the next couple of seasons and if he can somehow be healthy next year i'm totally cool with a Smith/Haskins combo. Not much else in dead weight to get rid of that really benefits us cap-wise.

The redskins need to sit out the first wave of free agency. Maybe pick up some dudes later who just want to stay in the league but haven’t found much interest. Stay away from any highly sought after players.

I would say very few of those i mentioned are marquee free agents. Those would be easy to mention (although Martinez and Shaq Thompson will probably get overpaid).

Bruce said we're close and with that in mind I say we sign as many stud FA as possible so we can win a SB next year.

We are going to have a whole load of cap space and a piss poor FA class to use it in.

Bruce will find a way to shrink our cap and draft picks number via trades including stupid contracts ala Alex Smith

What has he shown this year to make him worth $14 million per?

He's consistently graded in the top 10 for guards, if not close to top 5 in pff rankings. 2 time pro bowler.  If we don't pay him someone else will for sure and he's worth it.

Won't matter really -  he won't sign with the Redskins for market value (as the Redskins will have to pay premium for any top FA)  and he won't get an above market value offer from the Skins (if he was on another team he would). That is another problem the Redskins "Good Culture" causes - other teams just have to match or even get close to offers the Redskins make to beat out the Redskins.

Example - Clinton Dix took less from the Bears than was offered by the Skins.
