skinfan2k
Orpik and Grubby traded to Colorado for 47th overall pick.

Where did you get that? EDIT: I just checked Caps Twitter, its true. TERRIBLE value for Grubbauer. Hockey experts were predicting we could have got one the Islanders two first round picks. That's a GREAT trade...Grubauer alone is worth a 1st...but getting a 2nd AND dumping Orpik's contract is a fantastic move by GMBM. Not sure what Carlson's asking price will be, but this frees up some $$
skinfan2k
We got rid of 5.5M and are able to keep our top defenseman. Win!
Warhead36
I'm not sure we'd get a 1st for Gruby but then again I don't know how NHL teams value their picks compared to other sports. Getting rid of Orpik's contract is big, probably frees up money to be able to resign Carlson.

Popeman38
FANTASTIC trade. Clears up $5.5M in cap space, in addition to the cap going up $4.5M. Got a 2nd round pick and dumped salary. Anyone saying Grubi is worth a 1st hasn’t been paying attention to the tender market. Best case was getting a pair of 2nds. Getting a 2nd this year AND dumping $5.5M in salary and a 38 year old defenseman!!!!!!

What they think he's worth and what the Caps could actually get are not necessarily the same thing. Besides, now that Trotz works for the Islanders and knows Grubby, maybe he doesn't think he's worth that much.
Mournblade
Still dont know how we won a Cup with Orpik. Just like I dont get how the Ravens won a Super Bowl with Trent Dilfer.
bearrock
Looks like Carlson and Kempny will be back. I'm a little puzzled that they haven't sealed the deal with Reirden yet though
RonArtest15
Grubauer alone would have netted a first...

PokerPacker
So we traded away Varlamov to Colorado to make room for Holtby, and now we've traded away Holtby's backup to... Colorado.
Popeman38
If Carlson’s contract come soon in under $8M per, GMBM is approaching upper tier GM status. $2M more than Orpik and a decade younger.

Goaltenders never get good trade value back whether it's Scott Darling or Cam Talbot etc. etc. More importantly, we just got a boatload of cap room to keep more players including Carlson. bearrock
Consider it trading down a 1st to 2nd for a cap dump worth 7% of the cap. I think it's a good deal.
Hersh
It’s a solid trade given what they deem they need to do but this is another salary dump which is costing the Caps better assets. We saw it last year with MoJo and now with Orpik this year.

Plus unlike last year we have picks in the first three rounds of this draft. We're in good shape.

Plus, if the Caps could have gotten the number 12 pick in the draft (just speculating on the Islanders trading for him), that is a great asset. Zero point zero percent chance the Islanders were giving up #12.
