Is the Extremeskins message board officially dead?

I've been following this board since  Gibbs came back. It doesn't seem like it cause of my number of posts, but I've always followed this board and y'all for a long time. I finally created a username less than year ago if I remember correctly but don't post much. I understand about social media etc, but imo the board has been dead. I remember a few years ago the twitter feed topic was always going and now it's slow. The topics on here now it takes forever for someone to respond, Back then everything was fast so fast it was hard to catch up with the board. Other than the game day threads recently not much conversation has been going on. I see it noe being slow, but hopefully it picks back up when the season starts.

Its interesting seeing one of these threads after a preseason game. It seems that they used to come during the middle of the offseason and dead time. Anyway, I will say that my love / passion has dwindled in large respects to just growing up. Plus, I used to use this place as a crutch, in school away from DC places like this and its predecessors were all I could do to go and get skins resources. That has definitely changed as I've moved back to the city and as I've grown up and not really needed sports (and the Skins) as so much of my life.

But as to the quality of the board, I get kinda frustrated that with the growth of the site, it seems that it has (for the most part) dwindled the set of opinions. I remember the Campbell debates or before that the Ramsey debates or the Portis/Betts debates or the Portis/Bailey trade debates, etc. There were the definitive pro/con opinions but then there were people who could really think outside of the box and put together some crafty ideas. I loved those posts. And in a thread with 78 responses its easy to read every one, consider it and think of whether or not its worth a reply. But if the thread has 2000 responses or so, then unless you've been following it from day one, nobody's going to go in there and read all those posts and consider the quality of each one.

And that's another thing about the growth of the site. If the big thing being debated is Kirk's contract, we used to be able to have 20 threads about the different opinions about his contract (well, not it but whatever the big issue was). Now it really seems like a better idea to just post your own story on a blog, then tweet it, and try to get it posted in the news section instead of simply posting a new thread on it. In the first scenario, at least you can have the conversation about the issues you're discussing instead of having them swarmed into the entire conversation. Even this scenario brings up the situation that we really don't discuss particular articles any more, we instead bring up articles within larger threads to prove or disprove our point.

All that said, I still engage from time to time, still read up on my favorite topics not to fall too far behind.

We made a conscious effort to stop that multiple threads on the same topic dynamic. The RGIII madness and spamming of the same arguments by the same set of posters in multiple threads was the catalyst.

Its interesting you saw those multiple threads as a positive (at least that's what I take from your post). I get the point about different parts of the topic being talked about in different threads, but thats not what was happening in the majority of cases. It was largely the same debates and views being spammed over and over

I use Twitter a lot now and have some good conversations on there. But I still find good discussion on here as well (though I do miss some of the old posters who are no longer active).

regardless of what all these fools say about you, I think you are as beautiful as the day I gave you that avatar

and i think it's high time (where's my nitro-enhanced shop-vac bong?) the mods here lived down to their responsibilities

Thank you. Deep sincerity!

I will be sure to steer Bill Polian and Charlie Casserly away from this board, away from the enlightened moderators.

I blame Jumbo. I think he is out :kickcan: trying to find out if he is dead and is looking for someone to talk to apparently (see below). Not sure why he can't just come to ES instead. :taz: :beavisnbutthead:

I might be dead. No one will talk to me. Maybe they can't see me either. That could be fun. I'm gonna go find out.

I think we traded him during the preseason game.

Shame, I liked him. :kickcan:

That's a part of its thats above my pay grade. But I loved some of the unique posters and their opinions and seeing a thread started by one of them. It would easily draw me there instead of to another (similar) thread. I can't speak to the majority of cases or the spam things. I know it was an issue, but I felt like the smart posters could distinguish spam and BS posts the same way mods could. Its partially why people would go into threads and start with the "Hi there" posts. I think those got out of hand as well though because some people were too quick to label an "outside the box" idea as spam, but again that's above my pay grade.

It would bother me just as much when there are 25 threads on the problems we have along the OL, and the same 10 posters go into each one and say the exact same things. One could be talking about FA options, one about the draft, one about UDFAs, etc. But we don't need the same people going into every thread saying "our FO sucks and will never get anything right and so as a result this will never get worked out". That wasn't a literal example, but we see it now with things like the Cousins debate spilling over into other threads, or the name debate, or front office issues.

Sometimes I'll go on twitter or hogshaven to see different things, and to be honest it kinda reminds me of the old days. Like on hogshaven, they debate a single issue or a single post, like we used to do with the news articles. I even find myself reading through WP comment sections (oh the horror) to see individual stories discussed themselves rather than seeing them encompassed as part of some larger debate.

Several years ago there was a thread made on the history of Extremeskins, how it began and how the merger with Redskins, com came about.  BTW, Extremskins was not sold to Redskins.com from what I've been told it was a merger, still run by the fans but supported by the Redskins.  I'd hunt up the thread but I'm on the road right now, perhaps someone would find it and boot it back to the front page, there was a lot of really good info there.

Link to the thread that MTH started and wrote about it in 2010. It's archived, so not sure if bump-able.

You'd think that growth in membership would bring a wider set of opinions.

I do think though that the growth of social media like twitter and snapchat brings with it a change in how people post. Posts tend to be shorter which is sometimes a good thing (not as many walls of text!) but not as many that really develop an argument or idea.  It's just a natural evolution of both membership and how people use the board.

I can't believe I had forgotten about some of the original people. Mark the Homers post brought back memories. I must have found this board right after it started because I remember sitting at my desk as a network engineer preparing for potential Y2K issues. It's pretty cool the site's been around for 18 years

Social media is the killer. I signed up for ES before MySpace. Outside of AIM or ICQ or little chatrooms there wasn't **** else. Message boards are just the Tommy's Bookmarks to social media's pornhub. If you will. Times change. The game changes. It's nobody's fault.

Personally I know I'll always post on here because as an adult I always have posted on here. At this point, without ES, I have no idea what I'd do instead while taking a ****. It's just second nature. I miss the old days but I definitely still get something out of the site.

Meh, after watching that game the other night, which yes, I know was a preseason game, I just don't care.

Now guys are getting injured. It's like they don't care either.

We're a ****ty team, with ****ty ownership and a ****ty FO and we're gonna be ****ty for a long time.

Maybe we'll be .500 again or just a hair above it.

Easy my brother.  We may be better (I do think we will be) or maybe not.  You do care, just as I do :).  Let's watch the next game or two and we will have a better sense of what we are.  I do like our young pieces and it will be fun to watch them grow. Lets have fun and enjoy this year!  Hail

Since many seem struggle to start threads properly, I have a suggestion to try for one week - maybe the mods could proactively make up the logical threads the site needs.  e.g. lock a GDT soon after the game ends, then immediately start a post game thread to give a posters a place to go.

If we did have many active members creating properly formatted threads, they would likely be creating duplicate topics. I think solid basic catch all threads are the foundation of all message boards. No doubt on where to post about the basics, the game, the offense, the defense, etc.  Something big happens, it gets a thread. As it is I think many posters are gun shy to create threads, for various reasons.  When a mod makes a thread, it commands much more respect out of the gate.

I made a similar suggestion to mods on the Caps board, and it seemed to work out great.

A hair above .500 is 9-7 at the least.

Is it dead, I'd say no.  I looked back and found I've been a member for over 15 years, joining back in 2002 after lurking for a couple years.  I know my post count doesn't speak volumes.  I miss seeing a lot of the old personalities that used to be around.  I think back in the early days, this was a hub for deep content that didn't exist anywhere else back then.  The advances of the interwebs and other social instruments I believe has diluted the pool, making it easier to find out what's going on with the team.  I do make a point of browsing the topics and see what everyone is saying though.
