‘Right-Wing Death Squad’: Active-Duty Marine Plotted to Bomb DNC, Murder Black People, Feds Say

An active-duty U.S. Marine came under federal investigation for allegedly plotting with at least two others to assassinate minorities, drug users, and employees of the Democratic National Committee with explosives, rocket launchers, and automatic rifles.

That’s according to a newly unsealed FBI search warrant affidavit obtained by The Daily Beast, which indicates USMC Private First Class Travis Owens and his partners in the unrealized murder plot were influenced by Timothy McVeigh, the former U.S. Army soldier behind the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing that left 168 people dead and injured nearly 700. The document also states that one of the suspects had links to the Atomwaffen Division, a violent neo-Nazi group linked to at least five murders. A handful of active service members and veterans have been identified as being members of Atomwaffen, which calls for the armed overthrow of the U.S. government.

The investigation began in late August 2019, when a tipster contacted the FBI about disturbingly violent conversations they had observed in a private Facebook Messenger chat group named “Right Wing Death Squad.” According to the FBI, three men were behind the troubling chats: James Wisdom of Arkansas; mechanic Jason D’Juan Garfield—also of Arkansas—who went by the noms de guerre “Moon Man” and “Jugger Bugger;” and Owens, a Marine Corps E-1 from Arkansas stationed at Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri.

“Rhetoric in the private chat messages was consistent with racially motivated extremism ideology, to include aspirational violence against religious and racial minorities,” states the affidavit, which was signed by Special Agent Ryan Crump of the FBI Little Rock Joint Terrorism Task Force.

The only one of the three who has been charged to date is Garfield, who in May 2021 was sentenced to 78 months in prison for illegal gun possession. Charges against Wisdom and Owens have not been filed, a DOJ spokesperson confirmed to The Daily Beast, and neither has a lawyer listed in court records. Assistant U.S. Attorney Aaron Jennen, the prosecutor handling the case, declined to comment.

California man was arrested with an arsenal of weapons and a racist manifesto, officials say

A California man is in custody after police found a cache of weapons, ammunition, and racist writings in his vehicle saying he wanted to wipe out the Black, Hispanic and Jewish populations, officials said Thursday.

Wesley Charles Martines, 32, was stopped by Campbell Police officers on July 9, officials said, after a local business owner alerted police shortly after midnight that someone was prowling in the area, peering into vehicles and a storage shed.

Responding officers found assault-style rifles, a handgun, body armor and ammunition, along with what was believed to be an inactive pipe bomb in Martines' truck, according to a statement from the Santa Clara County District Attorney's Office.

Police seized a journal that included the racist and anti-Semitic writings, along with a plan to "go to sporting goods store, dress up as an employee and tie everybody up," the statement said.

"We definitely feel a crisis was averted," Campbell Police Capt. Ian White told CNN, saying there may have been a plan to target a local business. "There was a significant threat to the public," he said, noting investigators hope to learn more to understand the motive behind the arsenal.

Some of the bullets were personally inscribed with phrases that included "To a widow from the Grim Reaper," "Cop Killer," and "A Good Start," according to the DA's office statement.

Sacramento bomb plot suspect nearly wins release. How his wife kept him in jail

One of the men accused of plotting to blow up the California Democratic Party headquarters in Sacramento came within minutes of winning his release from jail Tuesday, but the deal fell through after his wife changed her mind about taking responsibility for him while he awaits trial.

After a 70-minute Zoom court hearing, U.S. Magistrate Judge Alex Tse in San Francisco had agreed to allow Jarrod Copeland to be released and return to his Sacramento apartment, with the understanding that his wife, Sheila, would act as custodian and report any violations of his release terms to the court.

Tse laid out the requirements — that Copeland remain detained at home, not have access to weapons, not use steroids and only have access to one electronic device — and was going to order Copeland’s release over the objections of a federal prosecutor and lawyer for the state Democratic Party who argued he is a danger to the community.

But the deal blew up at the last minute as Tse questioned Sheila Copeland about whether she understood failure to report any violations could land her in jail.

“Yeah, that’s a big responsibility,” she said.

“It is a big responsibility,” Tse replied, and directed her and Copeland’s attorney, John Ambrosio, to talk about the matter offline during the video Zoom hearing.

A few minutes later, the two reappeared on screen and Ambrosio told the judge that Sheila Copeland had changed her mind.

“She’s a little bit nervous at this point,” Ambrosio told the judge while Jarrod Copeland watched by video from the Santa Rita Jail. “She is wanting to represent to the court that she’s not comfortable with the responsibility.”

We should probably change the title of this thread, but I think this goes here.

‘Active bomb threat’ near U.S. Capitol; Cannon, Madison and Jefferson office buildings evacuated

Quote

Officials said Thursday that they are investigating “an active bomb threat” near the U.S. Capitol in Washington and are in negotiations with a man who drove a pickup truck onto a sidewalk and claimed that he had explosives.

U.S. Capitol Police said in a Twitter message that they were checking a suspicious vehicle near the Library of Congress. The Cannon, Jefferson and Madison office buildings have been evacuated. Police said there is a possible explosive device in the pickup truck, though no explosives have been found at this point.

Congress is not in session this week.

Authorities are speaking to a man in the truck who claims to have a detonator or explosives, according to multiple law enforcement officials who spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the active investigation.

U.S. Capitol Police Chief J. Thomas Manger said the incident started around 9:15 a.m. when the man drove a black pickup truck onto the sidewalk outside the Library of Congress at First Street and Independence Avenue SE.

He said the driver told an officer who responded to the call that “he had a bomb” and the officer said he saw what “appeared to be a detonator.” Manger said negotiators were “hard at work” talking to the man and that he was hoping to have “a peaceful resolution to this incident.”

Manger said they did not know the man’s motives at this time. He said they didn’t know “a whole lot” about the driver but said officials do have a “possible name and identity” for the man.

Officials were asked about a man live-streaming from the area during the news conference but would not answer any questions about the matter.

At one point, a man who appeared to be in a pickup truck was live-streaming outside the area, talking about a revolution and trying to get President Biden on the phone. The Facebook live videos of the man who apparently is in the standoff with Capitol Police show what looks to be a bomb in his lap. He is holding a large canister with a battery-powered device on top. He also claims to have ammonium nitrate in the toolbox of his truck. He said the device is sound-activated, and will only go off if the truck windows break by a bullet or other means.

Of the three threads, I think this is the only one it actually fits in.  I don’t know that is worthy of its own thread unless something more comes of it.  Just my 2 cents.

Was able to find some of the streams on Reddit. He's mad about Afghanistan. That's pretty much it.

Yea, I was calculating odds of what he is upset about and, given the timing, came up with:

2/1:  Afghanistan

3/1:  Stolen Election

4/1:  Mask Mandates

11/1:  Cabal of baby-eating sex traffickers

30/1:  General mental illness

70/1:  Brittany still being in conservatorship

80/1: That Jeopardy guy being "cancelled"

No way he has enough explosives to level 2 1/2 city blocks.  I would be surprised if he was able to build anything powerful enough to destroy his own truck.  And I would be REALLY surprised if he was smart enough to make a detonator that responded to the sound of breaking glass.

What’s the plan here?  Do you keep the area evacuated and then wait him out.  Or do you go directly in with the bomb squad robots and take care of it?

I don’t care about this guy, but don’t want him to become a martyr either.

That's exactly what they were talking about on TV...they can wait him out, but they don't want the martyr incident.

He's surrendered and is in custody.

If he blows himself up and only gets himself we can merge it all into the miscellaneous humor thread.
