LATime.com Neo-Nazis didn't start the violence at state Capitol, police say

We do not tolerate awful groups like American Nazis.  We reject them out right and I certainly would never hire one or offer my hand in friendship.  **** them.  The point here is that we respect the idea of freedom of speech, of peaceable assembly, and really of thought.  We combat ideas with better ideas.

I absolutely agree with that although I sometimes wonder (especially this year) how inclusive the "we" that rejects them is. Seems at least a quarter of the country is sympathetic to their ideas.

to clarify and reply to some things,, i absolutely do get why we must tolerate their hate speech in this country.

Nazism speech isn't such a slippery slope in my opinion, but i do get that you don't start moving stones unless you prepare for possible avalanche.
If it came to pass that they wanted to march in my town, i would go protest, but i'd not start any violence, as much as I'd think it is an appropriate response.v It is illegal for one, and dangerous to everyone for two, and third, against our way of life.

Z, i think that folks don't react to communism in the same way because on paper it is supposedly benign, and only made into the tool of oppression it was by corrupted people who controlled it. But beneath Communism and socialism is a noble goal, albeit a utopian pipe dream. Complete equality, total cooperation by all involved. Sounds great, but since human beings are involved, totally unworkable.

Nazism is hate from the outset, with no noble goal other than supremacy for themselves and "ethnic cleansing" or slavery for everyone else..

When we entered the war, the Holocaust had not really gotten going full steam, and was really only rumors. But the evil of Nazi Germany was apparent to us, even if not recognized by the general public. (And unfortunately, as we still see,, there are people who actually endorse the racism and nationalism and wonder why we can't be more like Vladimir Putin.. ..  uh,, i mean Nazi Germany.)
Sympathizers rallied on our soil during the war,, the Bund party flew our flag along with nazi flags at plenty of events.

I know Godwin's Law and all that ****, but the fact is, what is happening in much of our own political discourse now mirrors history in very unsettling ways, especially the various thug factions showing up to cause trouble at political events. (this is actually what the Nazis originally did,, their enemies were communist and socialist candidates, and they went from rally to rally and brawled openly, each blaming the other, and each dressing as the other in order to insure trouble began, and blame could be assigned.

Blind nationalism, complete and total unwavering blame for ALL problems on individual groups, misguided militarism and propaganda that would make Joe Goebbels stand in awe at the mainstream reach and effectiveness.

we're being shoved right down the paths of history, and those who point it out are alarmists, while the jackbooters of each faction claim to be standing up for what's right.

At some point it stops becoming hyperbole.

Hypocrite or not - I have no problem being intolerant of hate speech. But I also don't see our protected rights as 100% unabridged.

Someone earlier mentioned that American neo-nazi's and other hate groups are domestic terrorists. Personally, I wish they were properly identified as such and wiped off the face of this earth. ****ers need to stop breeding.

I understand the freedom of speech, I've got no problem with that.

Still, I think that many people should use their right to just shut up.

We all agree with this.

The question is WHY does it appear that principle is breaking down now, and how deep is the problem?

Its easy to be for freedom of speech when you agree with what's being said. The true test of character is how you handle it when you don't like what is being said.

Violent Pro-Trump Neo-Nazis to Crash GOP Convention

http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2016/06/29/violent-pro-trump-neo-nazis-to-crash-gop-convention.html?via=desktop&source=twitter

After a knife fight in Sacramento, neo-Nazis have decided to take their talents to Cleveland to defend Donald Trump supporters during the GOP convention.

The neo-Nazis who organized the pro-Donald Trump rally in Sacramento, California, thatturned bloody over the weekend have a new destination: The Republican National Convention in Cleveland.

“We’re essentially just going to show up and make sure that the Donald Trump supporters are defended from the leftist thugs,” Matt Parrott, spokesman for the white-nationalist Traditionalist Worker Party, told McClatchy, claiming that roughly 30 members of the party would head to Ohio in July.

For everyone's sake - for the Convention attendees, the Cleveland Police Department, the City of Cleveland, counter-protesters, and even these neo-Nazis - I really hope they reconsider this.

In fairness, the place you are most likely to face leftist thugs is inside the Republican National Convention (roll eyes)

Not that it specifically relates to the issue here, but my belief is that violent people tend to be drawn to violent groups, regardless of the political beliefs of the group's leadership. For instance, I'd be willing to bet that many of the hispanic protesters participating in the violence at Trump rallies have, at one point had, or will in the future have some sort of street gang affiliation. And gangs are anything but liberal. Young violent minds tend to adopt the beliefs of whatever group provides an opportunity to commit violence.
