Another Cat 4 hurricane hitting Mexico:

Hurricane Roslyn, now a Category 4 storm, to hit Mexico's west coast

A major hurricane is approaching Mexico's Pacific coast after undergoing a rapid intensification in just 24 hours.

Hurricane Roslyn was classified as a tropical storm on Friday evening. But a 65 mph jump in wind speed saw the storm rapidly grow to a Category 4 hurricane in less than 24 hours.

The storm became a hurricane at 10 pm Central Time Friday, and intensified into a Category 3 six hours later. The fast-paced growth of the storm rivals some of the quickest intensification rates on record for the eastern Pacific.

Hurricane Roslyn makes landfall in Mexico with ‘life-threatening storm surge’

Hurricane Roslyn slammed into west-central Mexico on Sunday morning, “bringing damaging winds, a life-threatening storm surge and flooding rains,” forecasters said.

Roslyn made landfall around 7:20 a.m. ET near Santa Cruz in northern Nayarit state.

The major hurricane whipped maximum sustained winds of 120 mph, the Miami-based National Hurricane Center said. A “major hurricane” is one that has maximum sustained winds of at least 111 mph.

As of 8 a.m. ET Sunday, Roslyn was about 90 kilometers (55 miles) northwest of Tepic, Mexico. It was moving north-northeast at 26 kph (16 mph).

At least 2 dead, multiple people missing after tornadoes strike Oklahoma, Texas and Arkansas, officials say

At least two people have been killed, and multiple people are missing after tornadoes hit Oklahoma, Texas and Arkansas late Friday, damaging homes and knocking out power for thousands as officials launch search and rescue efforts.

The storms claimed lives in Oklahoma and Texas, according to officials.

Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt issued an emergency declaration on Saturday for Bryan, Choctaw, LeFlore and McCurtain Counties after damaging tornadoes blew through the state.

“The state stands ready to send all the help, support, and resources southeastern Oklahoma needs to recover and rebuild from this devastating storm. Oklahomans are strong and resilient. We will build back these homes and businesses,” Stitt said in a statement.

Another atmospheric river will thrash storm-ravaged California, threatening more flooding and hurricane-force wind gusts

Swaths of California still saturated by ruthless storms will get walloped by another atmospheric river, spawning fears of renewed flooding and forcing some residents to flee.

The state has already been hammered by at least 11 atmospheric rivers this season. An atmospheric river is like a fire hose that carries saturated air from the tropics to higher latitudes, dumping relentless rain or snow.

The last, which struck California last week, left soil overly saturated and vulnerable to new flooding and rapid runoffs, the National Weather Service said.

The next atmospheric river is expected to slam California from late Monday night through Wednesday.
