***2021-2022 NBA Season Thread***

I think the entire basketball universe, other than hornets fans, had assumed Miami would have an easy time in this series. Especially after the first two games. Lin and Kemba were fun to watch tonight.

If one is not a fan of Miami or Charlotte I can understand that.  But if you look at the regular season match-up, we split the series going 2-2.  We both won at home and on the road.  So it's about as even match-up based on that.  I will give Miami the edge, simply because they are playing a lot better basketball than when they started the season.

But Charlotte had one of the best home records in the east this season.  One thing that is bothering me the most, we aren't as effective from 3 point range as we were in the regular season.  And our defense seems to come in pulses and allows other teams to get back into games.

But, I'm happy right now, we won two in a row at home and have a legit shot.  Just need to steel one on the road.

So Bill Simmons has been pushing this playoff improvement idea for awhile now and mentioned it again on his recent podcast.

To make the playoffs more exciting:

Idea 1: Change the first round back to a best of 5 format. However, to prevent the 1-2 seeds from being upset more easily by going back to 5 games and to give them an advantage for being tops in their conference the 1-2 seeds in each conference get 4 home games in the first round best of 5. The 7-8 seeds would only get game 3 at their home.

Idea 2: Top 7 teams in each conference are guaranteed playoff spots. The remaining 16 teams either (8 per conference) compete in a single elimination tournament to claim the final spot in each conference.

A huge twist to this idea is that the order of the draft lottery /balls is then determined in order of teams that missed the playoffs. So the team that loses the final play-in game and would be the 9 seed in theory will get the most balls in the lottery.

Idea 2 has a few benefits. First, it's an extremely entertaining mini-Tourney just before the playoffs. Next, it gives the playoff teams an extra week of rest.

Third, and perhaps most importantly, the seeding for the lottery prevents teams from tanking and ensures they try hard throughout, since they could become playoff team and if not, still need to do well in the tournament to get the best odds at a high pick. This also eliminates the NBA purgatory of being a good team but not a playoff team where you are basically stuck forever with no shot at getting impact players in the draft.

Thoughts?

CP3 went to the locker room looking furious about what seems to be a wrist injury.

Did he sprain it while trying to smash someone in the balls?

You'll end up up with people tanking that last game.

I can either be the 8th seed in the playoff teams or have the best chance to get the #1 pick, that's a no brainer.

If Curry isn't right by that SA series, it is going to be such a slog for the Warriors.

The Spurs are such a machine. Unbelievable. Last year they finally fell off. Then they get Aldridge and Kawhi makes the leap and the next year they're an even scarier juggernaut than they've ever been.

Make the 8 seed the #1 lottery favorite then.

The idea still has problems though. First off, the eight seed would then become more desirable than the 4, 5, 6, and 7 seeds. You don't want to see playoff teams start tanking late in the year.

Second, does the league really benefit if teams like the Jazz, Wizards, and Bulls win the top three picks? These teams are already talented and they're a lot further along and more secure than the bottom of the barrel teams. It would rob sad sacks like Philly of all hope and create a permanent underclass.

It would need some tweaking. I don't think you'd have playoff teams tanking for the 8 or 9 seed (most lottery balls) though since they'd be put in the tournament and one bad game could torpedo their draft stock and they'd be out of the playoffs. But it would force teams like 76ers to be competitive even if they had to spend for FAs and map out a plan to improve.

Also, having one team or even both teams tanking the play-in game would be a whole lot better than multiple lottery teams tanking after 30 games in

But anyway, what about just idea 1, moving the 1st round to best of 5 with the 1-2 seeds getting 4 home games?

The NBA should make it against the rules to get a top 4 pick 2 years in a row.  Leave everything the same, and if your ball gets picked in the top 4 and you were top 4 last year, the ball just gets put back in and you re-pick.

The NBA also has to make it easier for (bad) teams to develop talent.  They 76ers have a bunch of a guys on their roster they think might some day be good NBA players that they can't really do anything else with.  They are forced to develop guys they hope can contribute in 3 years on their current roster because there is no real alternative.  There has to be more of a farm system.

They also need to make it easier to to make in season trades when there is more likely to be mis-balance between teams that want current talent and teams that are looking for future talent (which will also make it easier for bad teams to get better).
