So what you're saying is, he deserves exactly as much attention as Ray Hallbritter?

Well I didn't mention Ray at all so no that wasn't what I was saying.

If you'd like to talk about Ray let's note that he isn't getting that attention simply because he's a Native American with an opinion in this. He created a group, funded it somehow, and started working to get attention. Press releases, press conferences, petitions, ads, interviews, etc. What can be said about Ray is that his apparent negatives aren't getting nearly enough coverage. That's a shame because if some of the things I've read are true, he's a scumbag.

I think he looks like he's going for a sunburn record.

Obviously a tribute to the Arizona weather.

Looks like Shanahan's natural skin tone during a football game.

Columbus day is OFFENSIVE and we should BAN IT

Oh wait I get the day off

Where is the OUTRAGE and FERVOR

Have you not lived in America for the past 25 years?

The Sopranos did their worst episode ever on Columbus Day backlash.

Your definition of "it all turns to tears" is "the president of the Navajo Nation has had some name changers disagree with him"?

The guy looks and acts like a bought and paid for puppet. He's the soon-to-be ex president in rather dramatic fashion and the official policy of the tribe he will shortly no longer lead is anti-name.

What Snyder has not realized is that you really can't win this fight by attacking. All he can do is hope the storm passes.

Every time the Skins trot out a "fake Indian" or one these seemingly corrupt politicians, it extends the story.

You would think this is the case, but how many people saw the chiron on the game and how many people will read the Deadspin piece?  How many people watch the Daily Show and think "redskins" means proof of bounty or that the Annenberg poll was just of fake indians in PA, vs how many actually check whether what they were told is true?   If Americans were truly thoughtful people we wouldn't be debating "colonization" in the context of a football team's name, with NAs in Redskins swag vs signs with bloody pictures of the logo scalped.  But what do Americans really care about?  Football. Susan Harjo figured that out a long time ago.

shelly was cleared and the charges were dropped 3 and a half years ago. hes leaving office because he didnt get re-elected.

the only thing dramatic about that is the way deadspin is spinning it.

if you call what snyder is doing 'attacking', and if you think this thing is passing without the other side of the story getting out, i'm not sure what to tell you.

this protest was on amanda blackhorses turf. and she got, what was it? 60 protesters? really?

wow.

there were more natives there supporting the team than there were protesting it.

more displays from the team like this- and more displays from the protesters like this- , the more the team wins the PR battle.

I was watching the game at a ****tail party, hosted at an acquaintance's house in Capitol Hill. Everyone had tomorrow off, so the hill was partying.

The volume on the TV was muted, but when Fox showed these guys, two or three people in the room starting making sarcastic comments about our "classy" fan-base. I just kept my mouth shut. I was embarrassed as their words hurt so much more than the loss on the field. These people were obviously non football fans, and they didn't even know I was B&G supporter, despite the team colors all over my body. But it's not like any of that mattered anymore. This incident made me happier than ever of my decision to retire Native themes from my gameday attire.

When its real people calling you out, the message is much louder than when it comes from faceless people online.

Edit: rooster, alcoholic drink party doesn't get through the censors here. lol

Red Face at the game.

lol. ****tail censored. :D

i agree with you on the headdress and make up, and i can understand how a native american could be offended by it.

I wonder what those same holier-than-thous say when the Atlanta baseball fans do that stupid chant & chop their arms?

Bandwagon anti-protestors are among the worst kind of bandwagoners. "Oh, look, someone said people shouldn't be doing that. I'm so behind that cause....just because it's popular to do that kind of thing now." ****tards....

Sounds like a wine and cheeser to me.

Let's string 'im up!

Oh definitely. The gathering was held at 17th and E. Capitol St. SE, just 5 blocks from our old stadium. Being in that neighborhood on an Autumn Sunday is already emotional for me, let alone when someone starts talking non football related S about something I've loved for all of my life. I so wished they had been Cowboy or Eagle fans, bc then I could understand it. But no, these were just regular folks. They didn't give a damn if we had won or lost the game.

All my friends that pull for the Cowboys and Eagles think changing the name is stupid.  If anything, they like most know the name is for a sports team and respect the heritage/rivalry, etc.

A couple of weeks ago I was checking out at the grocery store the cashier and bagger started discussing the Redskins name because I had my jersey on.  They were telling me it wasn't racist, etc. and shouldn't be changed.  While I agreed with them, they did not make a very compelling case because they lacked knowledge.  So, I gave them a few facts and talking points.

This past weekend I went in and a separate cashier and bagger saw my Redskins grocery bag.  They started telling me how it wasn't racist and gave me the talking points from my previous visit.  I was quite happy that the first couple remembered and spread the word.  So, I gave them more talking points.  Maybe next time they will be Redskin name experts :)

A small victory, but I will take it.

I hate when people hold up the line at the grocery store.  Ugh.

Give 'em your number and to them 'em later.

I just do it to piss impatient people off.  :)    No, there was no holding up a line and I agree with you.  Both times it was in the middle of the day and our grocery store is great at having tons of lines open.

Wait you didn't have the stones to defend it ?

Oh, I already knew that.

thats a huge part of the problem- spurious claims going unchallenged.

check out the pics from yahoo- (wont let me post that one, but heres the link- http://sports.yahoo.com/photos/protesters-and-fans-clash-over-redskins-name-1413155896-slideshow/

redskins-protests.jpg?w=640

at rallies, they are carrying signs referring to scalping. its not just this one sign- they are at literally every protest i've seen.

these people are clearly protesting the name because they believe 'redskins' means scalps.

you people who slurped the daily show piece are guilty of it too, because stewart and company let the same claims go unchallenged on his show.

unbelievable.

nice blurb about the oneida nation, while i'm at it.

The Oneida Nation of New York, which must be emphatically stated, is not a part of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy. Nor is the pro-gambling Seneca Nation of Indians or the St. Regis Tribal Council. All three groups have no formal or informal connection with the Confederacy but muddy the public's perception as to who the Haudenosaunee are by making unauthorized use of the Confederacy's symbols and is traditions. They do so to protect their gambling operations despite the Confederacy's official opposition to this immoral activity.

Thanks for the link Grego, I'll add it to my collection. There is no mistaking that there are multiple underlying conflicts in the Indian community. If you read the comments sections of various Indian on-line publications you often can pick up on it. Who is considered to be a card carrying member of a tribe and who is denied their card is a big issue. Most tribal leaders are elected. After winning office some will try to kick the people who didn't support them out of the tribe. If that is endemic then it would explain why it takes an act of courage sometimes for a card carrying tribe member to support the Redskins if their leadership is against the name. I suspect that some gambling money from Oneida and other tribes goes to the NCAI (National Congress of American Indians) and is distributed to the tribes that support their positions. That would explain why recently when Chris Cooley had a nice visit with a tribe somewhere but later the Chief of that tribe would only say that he supported NCAI positions. My thoughts are all conjecture but I don't underestimate the ability of the NCAI to put pressure on individual tribes to support their anti-Redskin agenda.

You probably already have this but if not:

wskins44-

i'm with you. outside of the obvious nuts like harjo and the protesters with the 'scalps=redskins' signs, there are some people with political and monetary aspirations in this 'debate'. i've pointed to the 1/2 billion dollar payout to the navajo just a week or two ago. nobody seems to have batted an eye.

the the longer this goes on and the more that comes out, the more obvious its becoming.

If we are hoping that polls of Indians are going to carry the day we are dreaming. The money and political pressure within the Indian community one day will flip those polls. At a minimum we shouldn't blindly depend on the belief that it won't. That is why I never cite polls of Indians.
