Yeah, unfortunately for him, he doesn't offer anything special that the others don't do better besides maybe blocking on 3rd down. But we may be packaging around that and AlMo did improve by years end.

I can't think of many snaps where we had Morris in on 3rd and passing downs and on passing downs on 1st and 2nd down he was mainly used in some kind of play action. There may have been a few snaps when he pass blocked but it was a few.

The lack of a 3rd down back with some speed, hands and an ability to be decent to good at picking up a blitz is one of things we lacked last year and was a part of our struggles on 3rd down IMO.

Agreed, I would like to find out who our best pass blocking back is, I can't recall if Helu is any good, don't remember seeing Morris amaze me and I just see Royster as too small....

Man I used to love watching CP light up people when he was pass blocking...

Are either of our rookies any decent pass blockers??? I see them as more speed backs and not helping much in the pass blocking aspect.

Morris seems like he would have the best chance of being a pass blocking back, not so much height wise but he's so stalking and powerful, I would think he could become a decent pass blocker in the future, am I wrong?

Yep, the opportunities were very few. We had to put packages out there with Paulsen and/or DY in the backfield to block and they typically were off of play action.

It's going to be interesting for sure to see how we work these new speedy backs from the draft.

I suspect we will try to move Royster for a late round pick or a possible contributor. He's the best blocking RB, but his running style is too similar to Morris'. Thompson is just a blazer who I like on 3rd downs and packages and I feel Jamison can be a 10-15 carry per game change of pace guy.

Helu is the wild card, though. If he is healthy, things get really interesting.

I miss CP's pass blocking, too lol. But Royster is the best blocking RB.

I doubt Thompson is any good. He's too dangerous to keep in the backfield to block and Jimbo Fisher is a horrible coach. This FSU class should've had at least one ring with all of that talent.

A lot of it is positional and smarts. We've been able to scheme around a lot of things because of the offense we run, having LP and DY in the backfield, etc... but eventually Bobby Turner is going to have to teach someone how to throw there ass around.

Don't sleep on Eric Kettani.

I'd be surprised if we got anything for Royster - teams will expect us to be cutting him at some point I think and this is a league where even good productive backs dont have that much value and Royster does not have THAT much production on his CV.

Thompson is just too small to be any use blocking so if he is in the game on 3rd down it limits what we can do with him and gives the defense a read on what we might be doing. Don't know much about Jamison but the write ups suggest more of a depth guy for 1st and 2nd down. I agree with you that Helu is the wild card - if he is and can stay healthy he can contribute in that 3rd down role.

That's why I don't think it will be for a pick unless a team is essentially calling "dibs" on him. As we saw in this draft, we got Bacarri Rambo in the 6th round with a 3rd round grade... picks are going to be hard to come by with all of this talent these days.

But it wouldn't surprise me if we pulled a Jarmon for Gafney type deal with Royster. Contributor for contributor. We'll just have to see, though. More than likely, he'll be cut though.

Ah... this is the kind of trade I see in Royster's future...

Adam Schefter ‏@AdamSchefter now Chiefs announced they traded cornerback Javier Arenas to the Arizona Cardinals in exchange for fullback Anthony Sherman.

Redskins sign 5 undrated free agents

May 1, 2013, 6:00 pm

The Redskins have signed five free undrafted free agents, according to Wednesday’s NFL transactions list. They are expected to join the team’s seven draft picks – as well as other invitees and eligible participants – for rookie minicamp, which begins Friday in Ashburn.

Name: Marvin Burdette

Position: Linebacker

School: Alabama-Birmingham

The skinny: The 5 foot 11, 230-pounder was the NCAA’s leader in tackles per game last season (13.08). Recorded 157 combined tackles, including 13 for loss, two sacks and forced two fumbles for the Blazers.

Name: Chip Reeves

Position: Wide receiver

School: Troy

The skinny: The 5 foot 10, 176-pounder made 65 receptions for 1,050 yards and six touchdowns for the Trojans as a senior. Runs the 40-yard dash in the 4.4 second range. Can also return kicks.

Name: Tevita Stevens

Position: Utah

School: Center

The skinny: A four-year starter for the Utes, the 6 foot 3, 300-pounder began his career as a right guard but played center as a junior and senior. Was an honorable mention All-Pac 12 last season.

Name: Jason Thompson

Position: Wide receiver

School: New Haven

The skinny: The 6 foot 3, 185-pounder caught a total of 77 passes for 1,927 yards and 30 touchdowns during his final two seasons with the Chargers. Has been clocked at 4.47 seconds in the 40.

Name: Nick Williams

Position: Wide receiver

School: UConn

The skinny: A return specialist, Williams took back 79 kickoffs for a total of 2,054 yards (25.9 per average) and two touchdowns during his career with the Huskies. The 5 foot 10, 184 pounder also returned 55 punts for 470 yards (9.0 average) and two scores.

can potentially help solve RT

http://www.realredskins.com/rich-tandlers-real-redsk/2013/05/need-to-know-nixon-missing-from-udfa-list.html

One name missing from the list of NFL-confirmed signings is Florida offensive tackle Xavier Nixon. It has been credibly reported that Nixon agreed to terms with the Redskins. He told the story of how the Redskins contacted him after they had used their seventh-round pick to tell him that they wanted him on the team.

"They actually called during the draft and told me they had used their last pick, and they were surprised to see me still on the board at that point and they would pick me up after the draft was over,'' Nixon said Sunday. "That pretty much made my decision right there. It's just a great opportunity to get to display my talent and show people the kind of person I can be with the team and around the community.''

It seems unlikely that Nixon is a camp tryout. It is possible that he just has not been able to sign his contract. The players report for minicamp tomorrow and it seems likely that Nixon sign on the dotted line then.

It is always possible that Nixon had a better offer and decided to take it. An agreement over the phone is meaningless until pen is put to paper. But we’ll probably see Nixon, who was a four-year starter at Florida, in Ashburn tomorrow.

At this point, it looks like our flirtation with Jammer and Lynch pre-draft is over, which to me has to mean that we went into the draft and got the guys we totally wanted at that position. Good news. I think if we signed, or just continued to talk to, Jammer or Lynch it would mean that we were unsure about whether or not the guys we drafted would contribute early and often. I think it's a clear tell that we have full confidence in them to be upgrades from the start.

At some point you got the numbers game in play: I assume Reed, Merriweather are givens. Ditto Thomas and Rambo. I recall it was Chris Russell or someone saying they like Pugh. That's 5. I am doubting they have more than 5. Right now, that leaves Gomes out.

Edit #14170 --Looks like I need to make it 28 for tomorrow with Jacksonville CB Colby Walden and Oregon State DT Andrew Seumalo.

Tryouts can be signed by any team like Practice Squad players though.

I'm not so sure Reed Doughty is a given. He has a cap number of over $1M which is a lot given our cap position for a reserve and special teams guy. I know Reed has played a lot but if one or both of the rookies looks good in camp and preseason and Merriweather is healthy I think Reed is on the bubble.

Maybe not a given but I see him as likely to remain, especially because of what he brings to special teams and losing Alexander, etc. To your point, though for it all to play out in camp would likely preclude adding another safety to the mix right now or shortly. Personally, I am not opposed to adding a safety but if we do, someone is likely to go at some point, Reed, Gomes or both. Assuming they indeed like Pugh. And I am not even entertaining Shanny's recent comments that included T. Jackson in the mix.
