BR: NFL Execs: The Cowboys Under Stephen Jones Are Turning into a 'Scary' Contender

Recommended Posts

http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2637834-nfl-execs-the-cowboys-under-stephen-jones-are-turning-into-a-scary-contender

The NFC general manager says something that hasn't been heard in a long time, maybe since the 1990s, when Jimmy Johnson, Troy Aikman, Emmitt Smith and Michael Irvin wrecked the NFL with multiple Super Bowl wins.

"The Cowboys," he says, "are starting to scare me."

Why?

"You could always count on Jerry Jones ****ing things up," he says. "That isn't happening any longer. That's a Super Bowl-caliber team now."

Hold on. What?

Another front-office executive, this one in the AFC, says something similar.

"Health is obviously the key for them," the executive says. "If [Tony] romoSUCKS can stay healthy, that's an 11-win team."

[...]

The Cowboys haven't been a formidable franchise in a long time. Not since Johnson ran them, suckered the Vikings into the worst trade of all time and built the team with an army of picks.

No, these aren't those Cowboys. Not even close. But this is a different Cowboys team than the one Jerry Jones was running post-Jimmy Johnson. Thanks to Stephen Jones.

A different franchise. A better franchise. One that is starting to scare some people.

Ah...yeah.

Must be Howie Roseman sniffing glue again.

Chicago, Minnesota, Cincinnati, Buffalo and Jacksonville had better drafts.

Quite frankly, I wasn't impressed with any if the drafts by our division rivals. Thought they were all average to below average.

I'm wondering which people it is starting to scare. Sure there OL is impressive, and Elliott should be good behind this line for quite some time. I always thought Elliott would be the best pick for them at #4 this year (especially because it was part of the trick so my Jaguars could pick Ramsey in our ES Mock, something I wasn't able to do in our Mock but the Jaguars succeeded in doing IRL).

I don't see them scare lots of people right now. Their QB is aging, D is injured or suspended, and with the Jaylon Smith pick and Sean Lee, think I read somewhere that between those two, that's 1 good knee left... That's scary. Their secondary isn't great either. So I'd believe they scare less people than us right now.  But at the same time, I do believe they are  heading in the right direction, opposite of the Giants and Eagles that are running downward right now.

We should be ready for quite some interesting matchups twice a year with those Redskins/Cowboys game, not this year, but in 2017/2018 they should be games for the division I believe.

We'll see. It's entirely possible Elliot is the next great running back. The Dallas line is very good. But then again, so was the Cleveland offensive line for Trent Richardson.

However, that defense has gaping holes. That secondary is awful, their pass rush is non-existent. Health is a major question mark as well. romoSUCKS is old, and how many games has he missed over the last 3 years? How many times has he broken his clavicle?

Bleacher Report.  That is all that needs to be said.  Unnamed GM....Jerry?  BR is the ABSOLUTE worst, truly.

The guy who wrote the article is more legit than BR:

"B/R NFL National Lead Writer Mike Freeman previously was an NFL columnist for CBSSports.com. He has been a sportswriter for the New York Times, Boston Globe and Washington Post, among other papers. His books include "ESPN: The Uncensored History" (2001) and last year's "Undefeated: Inside the Miami Dolphins' Perfect Season."

They had one 12 win season and everyone is going bananas. Every other year they were 8-8, and last year they were 4-12(to balance out the 12-4 I suppose).

They have a pretty good team....if romoSUCKS is healthy. But he's very injury prone at his age and I don't think they have any playmakers on D.

I'm still unclear how drafting a RB at #4 overall and then using a high 2 on someone won't play in 2016 and whose career will be defined by "please don't get hurt" suddenly makes them so scary.

Re: Elliott at #4- I watched a 10 minute highlight video of him and didn't come away that impressed. He used OSU's combo of superior athletes and zone read scheme to basically hit holes that you could drive a bus through. He's got ok speed but not so much that he'll be able to consistently break away from NFL athletes. He's got good balance. He's got a little wiggle but he's not shifty like a McCoy. More of a one cut and go type guy.

BUT- the Cowboys could have gotten a RB that was basically 95% of Elliott in the 3rd round and used #4 on a superior player at a more valuable position of need.

What the article is correct about is the fact that the son sounds like he is now calling at least most of the shots on player personnel.

Which, is greatly disappointing because watching JJ select players is entertainment in of itself.  And, I am still mad JJ got talked out of not drafting Johnny instead of a pro bowl guard.

Someone needs to give JJ back the power.  Reference the rest of the article I agree with the above.

I think Bill Callahan had more to do with the center and guard picks the two years that he was there than the idiot Jones's did,Just look at the two last drafts for evidence..They always go for the splashy pick that has great workout numbers or character and injury issues...Nothing has changed with the Cowboys and never will with those fools running that team..

Seriously when is the last time they have hit on a pick after the first round? I can't think of anyone..

A healthy romoSUCKS is undeniably a difference maker, doesn't take a football savant to see that, but at 36 years of age and with virtually no tread left on the tires after suffering injuries in 6 of the last 8 seasons, I'd be a lot more scared of the Cowboys if they had someone to back him up. They don't.

He sounds awesome, really. Anything from BR is disregarded, just me. Hail

Looking at their draft, and just a hunch mind you, I think Jerry was more involved this go around.  They took some wild swings. Stephen (Steven?) does not seem to roll that way.  Hopefully, fingers crossed, the apple fell close to the tree. Hail

Let's not be a total homer here...since 2010:

Zach Martin

Travis Frederick

Tyrone Smith

Dez Bryant

This is a league when first round successes are a 50% probability of success. They've done fine with first round picks.

This is also a league where hitting on picks on the 2nd and 3rd days of the draft are absolutely necessary if you want any type of sustained success.

1. Califan007 deserves props for his thread starting style.  His patented system of topic intro + well selected pics and gifs follow-up works to great effect; the beauty of nicely executed simplicity and economy while still conveying maximum meaning is a thing to behold.  Blessed brevity being a boon to quality message-boarding, the guy is nails.   (see also his chip kelly thread... pricelesss)

2.  Speaking of Califan's posts, in the Cousins is the Man thread in the stadium he posted a couple of clips of First Take or First Dump or whatever the thing is known as in which Chip and Stephen seemed to agree that the Cowboys 1st round pick 4th selection running back is the bees knees.   Begging the indulgence of anyone who follows the college game, is EE that good?

Really, I'm not looking for an answer that involves too many keystrokes 'cuz I don't wanna waste anyone's time but if you could perhaps throw out a name of a comparable current NFL rb to say give the idea I'd be grateful.

Did we ever find out what happened to him? 2nd round pick, struggles for a couple of years but then starts to put it together his third season, leads team to the playoffs and boom, released out of nowhere in the offseason. Kept waiting and waiting for the story of why to drop and all I remember are some accusations of cocaine use. Did that ever get explained in further detail?

According to his wiki page, the guy has had a lot of drug problems, and a couple of scrapes with the law. Most recently in 2013 when he was charged with simple battery:

Seems legit. I lay awake at night shaking because the cowboys are so scary. I have a night light and everything, still scared.

Try curling into the fetal position and gently rocking yourself while sucking your thumb. That always helps me when I think of the juggernaut in dallas.

Also, humming discordantly. Do that too.
