Multiple sources tell NBC News that Mike Morrell, the deputy CIA director and a longtime CIA officer, would likely be offered the job as acting director but with the understanding that he may be elevated to the job permanently as some point. That's how George Tenet got the job, first as deputy director in July 1995, then acting director following the resignation of John Deutch in December 1996 and finally as director in July 1997, staying on in the Bush Administration. Morrell is a longtime CIA analyst and was an eyewitness to two of the most momentous events in recent U.S. history. He was traveling with President George W. Bush on Sept. 11, 2001, as the president's briefer, then was in the Situation Room on May 1, 2011, as deputy CIA Director, when Navy SEALs killed Osama bin Laden. DjTj
The timing of this is interesting. I wonder if Petraeus purposefully delayed his decision to avoid affecting the election. It would be the kind of thing I would expect a "good soldier" to do.

visionary
Always quick to the draw, visionary. Wasn't expecting to read this. Wow! I'm still kind of shocked by this, even after seeing a couple people on twitter allude to something going on with him a couple of hours ago. It kind of reminds me of what happened with Sanford, except that was a lot crazier. This is more just depressing.

Special K
Good Lord. Is there anyone in DC who isn't completely bassackwards with their life priorities? That's too bad to hear about. He seemed like a pretty decent guy, not someone of the character that would do something like this.
LadySkinsFan
I would think that anyone in a lower level in the CIA who had high clearances and had an affair they'd be bounced. It's one of the things they polygraph for, as these kinds of secrets open a person to blackmail. Not surprised that he resigned under these circumstances. s0crates
Wow.Cue the conspiracy theorists. Well it is the CIA . . . conspiring is what they do. Feinstein said . . . Not everyone at CIA requires a lifestyle.EDIT: But Petraeus most certainly did, make no mistake about that.
