What a banner day for DooDoo Brain Daniels - front page of ESPN for entering into, what was at minimum a questionable wager (spoiler alert -- neither of them are going to win it, you CAN bet on that) and then pressures the team MVP for the last several seasons into giving up his jersey number (edit: he made Tress cry, seriously who can get behind that ??).  Reeks of the entitlement we all saw coming - not a good start.  So far Daniels Disparagers 1, Jayden Joyfuls 0.

Cant tell if this is serious or a parody

Tress Way has come full circle.

A man's man. A consumate professional. A man with honor, dignity, and pride.

A man of rare character, who in this decision, as in all others he has made during his illustrious career, always put the interests of the team, above his own.

May Jayden one day prove himself to have been deserving of the gracious sacrifice of the man whose number he now wears proudly on his back.

Tress Way explains why giving No. 5 jersey to Jayden Daniels was 'the right thing'

May 09, 2024 at 07:44 PM

Zach Selby

Tress Way has been one of the Washington Commanders' most reliable players since he joined the team in 2014. He's a four-time captain, a two-time Pro Bowler and a fan favorite because of his personality and production. All of that was done while wearing No. 5.

The Commanders are starting a new era and added a pivotal piece to their future by taking LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels with the No. 2 overall pick. He was one of the most dynamic players in college football last year, winning the Heisman Trophy for hitting career-highs in completion rate (72.2%), passing yards (3,812), passing touchdowns (40) and rushing yards (1,134).

Daniels also happens to wear No. 5.

Head coach Dan Quinn and general manager Adam Peters gave Way time to think about what to do with his jersey number, but with rookies reporting for minicamp and joint OTAs around the corner, a decision needed to be made. In the end, with a little negotiating between the two players, Way decided to pass the jersey number on to Daniels, meaning that he'll be sporting a different number for the first time in over a decade.

Command Center | Exclusive Interview with Jayden Daniels

"I just feel like there's just so much excitement around this organization, hands down the most I have ever seen," Way said on the most recent episode of Command Center. "All of the excitement [is] building and building and building.

I just feel like this is...a very small part that I could do."

Way has come full circle with passing on the jersey to Daniels since the rookie joined the team.

He originally declined to give it away "right out the gate" because of the connection he had with the number. He felt wanted for the first time in his career when Washington picked him up off the waiver wire following his release from the Bears. The No. 5 felt right to Way from the moment he picked it, and since then he's been not just one of the better punters in the league but the most consistent player for Washington in the past 10 years with a touchback rate of 6.2%, an average of 46.9 yards per punt and 37.7% of his punts landing inside the 20-yard line.

All of us have opinions.  I think Way of ALL the Commander players should be one to keep the #5 if it has ties and meant something to him.  He has proven himself in the NFL.  Rookies need to earn that respect as Way has.

To many times I have heard others say that they should be paid in the work force the same as a 20-25 year vet after working for 2 years in the field.  I don't think so.  It takes time and experience to gain the knowledge to learn a trade whether it be punter, natural gas machine repairman, I.T. Specialist etc.

JMO, have at it.

Jayden has been very good in his interviews and how he has carried himself since the draft. This tweet was not his best. He should have thanked Tress for giving him the number and thanked the fans for supporting him.

I know this is done in nearly every sport but I think it is tacky to ask a long term vet, pro bowler and all pro to give up their number.  DQ and Peters should have shut it down.  Rookie has to earn it, and this would lose some locker room points with me.

To be clear, this is not a big deal.

I guess we're at THAT part of the off season now...

No kidding.

Look, we either believe in the guy or we don't.  If we do, we give the guy his number if it's not retired, or belonging to a former player who brought us rings.  I love Tress as much as the next guy, but we do need to escape the mindset of being pre-defeated who's best player will just continue being a punter.  And if it all works out, then Tress will actually get to be a weapon in games that matter/we can reasonably expect to win.

You really don’t want to make it about value vs experience if this is your take (which is a fine take to have btw, have at it). Daniels could be the 20th best QB in the league (or worse) and be worth more than any punter. That’s just the reality of the weight of QB play in this league.

We obviously hope he’s much, much better than that.

Man I agree with you.

As much as we all love us some Tress Way, he's a 34 yr old punter in a profession with an average career of less than 5 yrs. Statistically, last year was a down year for him and it wouldn't be a shock if he's not here in 2025. If his heart felt speach/media appearance was an indicator, Tress Way seems to understand what's up.

Awesome dude and hope he has a really good year with a record low number of punts.

He's the punter.

Give up the number or get cut.

People overthink stuff.

I get it , it is only a #… but to a degree it goes a lot deeper, the expectation that a seasoned NFL (regardless of his position) is expected to just give up his # after having it for such a long time… hmm

kinda like a employee having 10+ years at his employment and this new young supposedly can’t miss employee comes in and wants his office, or title or whatever it may be as to your employment… would you just simply “Give it Up”

I wanna see him and Dak do this competitively. Like, hyper adrenaline fueled raged filled competition. To the death. Would make a great Old Spice commercial.
