Why wouldn't another 5th or 6th rounder most likely not be as good.  Was our scouting dept so much better than everyone else that passed on Howell lol. Did he convincingly show that he deserved to be picked higher when he was given 17 games but they are most likely going to move on. A first or 2nd rounder with Howells stats would get another look or two day 3 picks dont get that luxury.  Every nfl team did not screw up and pass over Howell lol

Futher more im fairly certain we can find another back up in the 5 th or 6th that provides Howells skills and traits and stats and W/L for that matter.  Yes it's team game but QBs ultimately get judged on wins and losses. Hence why Alex Smith stayed around for a long time with underwhelming stats

Again Howell showed he can play in the league, at times at a fairly high level despite his situation.  You can't convince me the next 5th or 6th rounder will reach Howell's level.

More QBs who would’ve gone Day 2 in the past are now falling to Day 3 and this class is loaded even in the third tier. I’d still keep Sam though as he has shown he can play

The whole roster is lackluster and we continue to miss on first round stars. I don’t even know where to begin and sit on fence between Howell or not

We have to go get a QB.  I like the idea of taking Marvin Harrison Jr. after seeing us getting roasted by AJ Brown and Lamb.  But we have no excuse to pass on a QB.

Build around a QB and just take the best players available.  Our team lacks talent but we need a QB who can help elevate the players we currently have.

There is no talent in this team. The DT are solid but neither is top five. The Wr are ok but not great.  McLaurin probably top 15 or 20. There no blue chip talent on this team. They can replace the Qb if picking top 2 but there are alot bigger problems then just that on this team.

Noone is arguing against that but the QB is a huge hole and we gotta take a swing at a blue chip one when we have a chance.

If you pick that high u should go Qb but that not going to fix much there are major problems on this team.

I swear if any of you start a welcome to Washington Drake Maye draft thread before he’s selected (if he’s selected) like we did for Chase Young I’m starting a movement to have you banned.

Bad juju.

Tmac is a top 10 receiver with a decent qb throwing to him.

It's done.  Welcome to Washington Caleb Williams, Drake Maye, or Jayden Daniels.

Fixed it. Who knows how we and other teams will have them stacked after combine. I could see Jayden or Drake going 1 if they ran crazy at combine, showed off sick arm, Jayden weighs 215-220, etc.

If Caleb is there at 2, sure.  But I think there is about a 90% chance he goes #1 overall.  I think he's gonna have to force his way to DC Eli style if he wants to be here.

If Caleb goes #1, then there is zero chance I would pick Daniels over Maye.  I like Daniels, but he's not as good as Maye and he doesn't have nearly as good of an NFL body.  Maye is the uncontroversial choice at 2 this year.

Look at it this way, there's no harm in keeping Howell and he may come back next year much better after all of the growing pains. This season was a grind for Sam and he survived it. I hope we reap the benefits of keeping Sam around and would love to see what he can do with new coaches and more talent.....even if it's as a backup. For a franchise searching for a QB we can afford to keep him around to see if he develops into a good pro.

I think we should have a separate QB discussion thread, including the draft, so we can talk about the rest of the draft here. Right now we have the Sam Howell/QB thread, the draft order thread, and the comprehensive draft thread all talking about QB's. Maybe we could at least keep Sam Howell out of here and just talk about draft prospects. It's tiresome. Sam is either gone or buried on the depth chart. Let's move on.

Plus you have 4 other top 100 picks to fill starting holes with. I think we go heavy defense in free agency. And heavy offense in the draft. Have a young fast offense to grow together.

It works both places IMO.  This draft is now so much about these QBs.  So tough to avoid that conversation here.

But, the Sam part? I'm all about talking about Williams vs Maye vs Daniels. As long as we also get the other meat and potatoes. The should we cut Sam or keep him as a backup conversation, on top of all of the other Howell conversation just drags down the draft thread.

Should be a separate one for which Long Snapper we are going to pick too. Lots to discuss. Not only who we want, but how much we trade up to get him, etc.

Trent Dilfer breaks down what makes UNC QB Drake Maye special

After a highly productive first season, North Carolina QB Drake Maye will enter 2023 as one of college football’s top quarterbacks and among the best prospects in the 2024 NFL Draft. That’s because, in Trent Dilfer’s eyes, he has all the makings of a player than can make an NFL team very happy in the future.

Dilfer had a lot to say about Maye in a Sports Illustrated piece by Albert Breer. He said that USC’s Caleb Williams is going to take a lot of the spotlight from him even though, with his skillset, Maye could make the case as the No. 1 overall pick in other draft classes.

I have nothing bad to say about Drake. But it’s different now. This is not apples to apples,” Dilfer said. “Drake Maye has what you call the gift of smooth. Drake, yes, has good horsepower. Yes, has good twitch. But, really, his gift is making hard things look easy.”

“He’s very fluid, he’s very smooth, he’s a good processor. He has good athletic traits, not great,” continued Dilfer. “More of a wing forward in basketball where Caleb is the dynamic scorer. Because of Caleb and because of how notable he is? Drake’s not going to get the attention that he would’ve gotten from other drafts. Because I think he’d be No. 1 in other drafts.

From there, Dilfer spoke with Breer about comparisons for Maye at the next level. That’s where he continued his high praise as he named three quarterbacks who are among who many believe are within the Top-10 at the position in the league today.

“You’re just going to hear a lot of (Justin) Herbert and Josh Allen. You’re going to hear a lot of that when the evaluators start evaluating,” said Dilfer. “He’s a big guy but he’s really, really fluid, really smooth.”

“He’s (Joe) Burrow. That’s exactly who he is. He’s Joe Burrow, who we know is one of the great players in the NFL,” Dilfer said. “Burrow’s a very good athlete, he was a very good high school basketball player, he’s a great competitor. But what separates Joe Burrow is this innate quality, this nuance to his game that people want to say is something that’s it’s not.”

Maye, as a 6’4 redshirt sophomore, put in work as UNC’s QB1 last year.

...He’ll definitely be able to do so if he can keep the Tar Heels on a better track than they found themselves on to end last season. From there, it likely won’t take him very long to hear his name called in Detroit next April if he continues to show what he already has as a collegiate player....

I don't care too much one way or another.

I find the QB thread more superficial.  The talk about for example do we even take a QB with our pick, etc and all the theoritical stuff -- I find it the more frustrating thread as for discussion compared to here.  But I'll engage either way.  On the draft thread we are good getting into brass tax about the specific players.
