What's 100% a scam, yet still accepted by society?

California specific but CRV. Paying an extra fee for bottles and cans (and being taxed on that extra value) so that the State can feel good about offsetting the costs of people who don't recycle...allegedly you get the amount back when you take it to a recycling center but then the State closed the majority of them.

Also, health care and dental care costs.

Credit ratings, gerrymandering, political donations, commercial and foreign ownership of single family residences, social security, capital gains being taxed at a lower rate than income, capital gains not being taxed until realized and being used as collateral for a loan not counting as realization, etc.

Having to "do" your taxes.  It's a stupid ****ing game the government plays that is completely unnecessary.

"You made $X and we know exactly how much money you should have paid us, but we're going to make you do a bunch of stupid **** to try and calculate exactly how much you should have paid us, and if you didn't pay us enough, you better pay us the money or you are ****ed!  And if you miscalculate the amount of money you owe use that we know you owe, we aren't going to tell you and instead you are going to be penalized and owe us even more money.  But oh, if we **** up on our end, you will have to wait years to get it resolved.  Enjoy!"

EDIT:

Also speed cameras.  **** those things.

EDIT 2:

Toll roads.  I understand they may need extra money to build em, but at some point that money should have been made back.

Businesses being allowed to grow to be "too big to fail" without getting broken up, allowing them to privatize profits and socialize losses and then continue to not break them up after bailing our their failures.  Slap-on-the-wrist fines for companies not even approaching the damages/profits from committing crimes simply making it the cost of doing business.  Endless delays of civil fines tied up for decades with endless appeals rather than forcing a payout on first judgement and then making them fight to claw back, forcing victims to take settlements while the perpetrator gets to not acknowledge fault.

“Modern audience” adaptations of well known and loved fantasy series.  It’s fan fiction written by hacks that are physically incapable of not making projects about them, and I’m done pretending it’s somehow progressive.  I’m not referring to casting, I mean the story line changes.

The average price of a simple brake job is the blatant theft.

Credit card companies charging for identity theft protection, essentially off loading the cost of their own terrible security and verification processes.

Paid parking at a hospital that’s already charging you a fortune.

The Republican Party.  They sabotage government and then use the consequences of their sabotage to argue government can’t be trusted.

Insurance industry, while not entirely one hundred percent a racket, it sure is close. Sick of being inundated with the same damn commercials from the same 3 companies daily. My lord Progressive practically has a short film commercial these days - the space station one. They have too much money to play with. Co-pays are another IMO.

Chiropractic

for many things, probably.  All that wellness crap is largely nonsense, but I saw 20+ specialists of different kinds when I busted a disc in my back.  Nothing worked and I could barely walk for a good year and a half.  One chiropractor had me back to running around again in a month.  The man’s a saint in my opinion.  Best money I ever spent.

Hollywood is so up its own ass with nepotism that it seems all the writers these days were born with silver spoons up their asses and never lived real lives and gained real experiences to draw from in their writing.  Gene Roddenberry, creator of Star Trek, was a WWII Pilot.  Alex Kurtzman, current hack ruining his franchise, simply married the daughter of the head of the MPAA.  One lived a life that exposed him to different worlds and viewpoints.  The other grew up in the Hollywood bubble.

Insurance is a losing investment.  That is, the expected return is less than you put into it.  As such, insurance is really only good to hedge against things you cannot afford to pay for yourself if something does happen, but is unlikely to actually happen.  Otherwise, you'd be better off dropping those insurance payments into a bank/investment account and using that to pay off the damage when something breaks.

Did you try a physical therapist first?

The point of insurance is not to "win the bet" it's to create certainty.

The only insurances I have now are renters (lease requirement), car insurance (same), and supplemental health insurance (because I'll never afford really good care without it).
