JLC talk recently about new ownership?Β  If so what did he say?Β  Β That is, does he think the sale definitely going down?Β  thanks.Β

He didn’t say sale was definitely happening but he says March or May.

Β

I listened to it an hour ago on the app. Β
Β

When talking about the sale, his main point was the new owner could still fire Ron.Β

I don't have time to check, but has a new owner coming in ever kept a losing coach?

Dan Snyder, of all people. 1998 Redskins lost their first 7 games, finishing 6-10. Snyder was approved May 25th 1999, far to late to make any changes.

Cowboys at Commanders: β€˜Ron Rivera and Scott Turner should have been fired on Sunday night’

We check in with the experts on the Commanders for some intel before the Cowboys game.

Β

By Dave Halprin on January 6, 2023 8:00 am

Β

Β

The Dallas Cowboys travel for Week 18 to take on the Washington Commanders. The Cowboys still have things to play for, while the Commanders have been eliminated from the post-season. The Cowboys will play to win while the Commanders will be looking at some young players. As such, the Cowboys are 7-point favorites according to DraftKings Sportsbooks.

Β

We check in with the fine folks at Hogs Haven to see what is up with the Commanders.

Β

Blogging The Boys: The Commanders are going with Sam Howell at QB. What will Howell bring to the offense?

Β

Hogs Haven: Sam Howell hasn’t played since the pre-season, and the word is, he hasn’t gotten a ton of practice time in either. I expect him to make a few nice plays, but overall struggle with the speed of the pro game at this point. He does have a pretty strong arm and racked up over 800 yards rushing last year in college. I wrote a profile of Howell earlier in the year.

Β

BTB: Do you expect the Commanders to focus on winning the game, or will there be plenty of looking at young players for the future?

Β

HH: I think this game will be almost entirely geared toward the future. There already appear to be a ton of injuries popping up this week among vets, and I suspect many of them aren’t very interested in risking injury in a meaningless (for Washington) game. Ron Rivera pulled the rug out from the team last week by starting Carson Wentz, and I expect the team to return the favor against the Cowboys.

Β

BTB: Do Ron Rivera and the coaching staff deserve to be back next year, or is it time to clean house?

Β

HH: Absolutely, categorically, not. Ron Rivera and Scott Turner, the offensive coordinator, should have been fired on Sunday night, after that debacle against the Browns. Ron’s coaching this season has been incompetent, and Turner’s play calling has been abysmal. If I had my druthers, Jack Del Rio would be the acting head coach, with Ken Zampese elevated to OC for this final match.

BTB: Who are the bright spots for next year, which players do you think are the cornerstones to a playoff team in Washington?

Β

HH: For as miserable as things have been for the past few weeks, the team has definitely had a few bright spots. Wide receiver Jahan Dotson looks like the real deal, currently tied with Christian Watson for the most receiving TDs among rookies. Rookie running back Brian Robinson also looks like a very solid addition, and with a full offseason to get healthy, I expect him to be a 1,000+ yard back next year. On the defensive side of the ball, safety Darrick Forrest broke out this year, and second year linebacker Jamin Davis started playing up to his billing this season.

Β

BTB: The Cowboys are 7-point favorites at DraftKings Sportsbook. Is that a fair spread? Do you think the Commanders can cover or win? How do you think Sunday plays out?

Β

HH: I expect the Cowboys to win this game by multiple touchdowns. My primary hope is that Sam Howell makes it out relatively unscathed.

The moment the someone wins the bidding, they should be contacting coaches. Tell them that once I got approved, I would like them to be my coach. Β

Rivera has had more control and the least amount of Snyder involvement of any coach in history and he still can't get results.Β  Everybody else had the excuse of Snyder and Cerrato/Allen meddling and screwing things up.Β Β

Did he though? Same was said by some about Shanahan and we later found out differently. Β We’ve already uncovered Snyderβ€˜s fingerprints on the Wentz trade, and It would appear Haskins was pushed on him in year one. What else will we find out after Rivera is gone?

True, but I'm inclined to not give him a pass on Haskins because if that was a condition of the job, he could have worked that out upfront or just passed on the gig.Β  I'm sure the topic of QB, and Haskins specifically, came up in the interview.

Where else could he have gotten personnel control?Β

Maybe nowhere else, but being able to pick your QB is kind of a big deal.Β Β

Β

If the owner making Haskins a condition to get the job, that shoulda been a red flag that maybe this isn't the place to be.Β  Assuming Rivera didn't himself have a high evaluation of him before the job, that is.

If your options are working for Dave Gettleman in NY or having personnel control with the condition of giving Haskins a shot, you are taking the latter

Here’s the openings in 2020:

Β

Us, Dallas, New York,Cleveland and Carolina.

Β

So, Ron had 4 spots if he wanted a job in 2020. Β I think New York would’ve gave him a look, maybe Cleveland.Β
Β

Or Ron would’ve waited a year.

Β

He took the job here because of the power Dan gave him and you can bet Dan made giving Haskins a chance a condition. Dan probably doesn’t hire him, if he didn’t say that.

Β

Β

Ron’s mistake is that he should of said, I’ll give your guy a chance but I am bringing a qb to compete with him for the job.

Rivera is a good man manager, but not a good NFL HC, I always look at how many of the teams this off-season who will be hiring new HC and how many would make Rivera there new HC. My guess is non, zero, zilch . So we need to move on, give Del Rio the reigns for next year as he's the only coach to have a successful year for us. If it doesn't work move on in 24 under new ownership,Β  we can't, repeat can't have Rivera coaching in 23 in what would be a lame duck year for him. The players like Rivera but they would like Winning games more.

Β

Thanks Rivera but Goodbye.

Kind of hard to think of a good, qualified OC candidate who would come here knowing Rivera is heading into a lame duck season under a new owner who will likely fire everybody. For a franchise that doesn’t have QB figured out. Who is signing up for that who we would want, who wouldn’t be more coveted elsewhere? Who the heck is choosing us over a better opportunity, and if this odd situation in a dying regime is their best opportunityβ€”why do we want them?Β
Β

I’m not saying we should keep Turner btw, he’s a problem. I’m willing to try anything and I don’t really care if it flops hard because I’m fine if we unintentionally tank next season. Just saying, I’m not positive this OC situation is gonna get better.Β
