EmirOfShmo
Ah...so this is why the talk of pardoning the kids has been floated out there by the White House Occupant. Also, Melania's records have been subpoenaed as part of the investigation. https://www.cnn.com/2020/12/02/politics/ivanka-trump-deposition/index.html Ivanka Trump, the President's daughter and adviser, sat for a deposition Tuesday with investigators from the Washington, DC, attorney general's office as part of its lawsuit alleging the misuse of inaugural funds, according to a court filing. In January, the DC attorney general's office sued the Trump Organization and Presidential Inaugural Committee alleging they abused more than $1 million raised by the nonprofit by "grossly overpaying" for use of event space at the Trump hotel in Washington for the 2017 inauguration. Depositions of witnesses as part of the lawsuit have been underway over the past several weeks. ... The attorney general's office has also subpoenaed records from Barrack, Ivanka Trump, first lady Melania Trump, and Rick Gates, the former inaugural committee deputy chairman, the filing said. EatsMoreChicken
10 hours ago, Larry said: Actually, I had a thought. Although probably take an Amendment to do it. Government officials (put a restriction on it, to limit it to high level officials. Maybe "any position that requires confirmation by Congress"?) can be impeached after they leave office. (Maybe a limitation. Impeachment must start within two years?) If impeached, (and "convicted"), then any pardons issued, related to that person's time in government service, is voided. It preserves impeachment as the check on official abuses. And is consistent with the "can be prosecuted after being impeached".) Sets the bar really high, but it does exist. But impeaching someone is part of the process for removing them from office. You can’t impeach someone who’s no longer in office. This just sounds like you want the ability to nullify pardons. And what I want, is a way of dealing with it, IF it rises to that high a level.

The good news about this lawsuit is that it isn't federal it's local government so pardons don't apply. I think the pardon for Ivanka is for the IRS part of her tax fraud where the Trump Organization paid her contractor fees while also paying her a salary. It won't protect her or the Trump Organization from New York state tax fraud charges. This isn't smart to accept a pardon because the pardon incurs guilt. So if they are guilty at the federal level, that can be used against them in state and local charges. Oops! The stupid is deep in this family! 3 minutes ago, PokerPacker said: As long as it's a political process, it'll never have any value. See: Impeachment of the treasonous Trump. Right. The penalty is removal from office, which in Trump's case the Senate didn't even hold a trial, they moved right to the vote.

visionary
Why would it be up to him? Is Trump resigning? Were they planning to have Trump resign before the inauguration so Pence could pardon him at the last minute?

Llevron
Snowden stole classified information from the united states and released it publicly. The reason it is classified is because it literally makes us all less safe if its released that way. I'm sure the whistle blower thing was created specifically for instances like this. He had other options.
Jabbyrwock
So stupid related/unrelated question. If Trump pardons all his progeny for federal things they haven't been charged with yet, when Biden comes in can he just use the same precedent, do the same for Hunter (whether he did anything or not) and magically eliminate 4 years of Fox News programming? And of course the GOP will be perfectly fine with Biden pardoning Hunter because, after all, Trump did it for his kids and they were fine with it. I mean...they wouldn't be hypocritical would they? </sarcasm>

I guess that depends on whether Hunter Biden thinks he did something illegal, and if not, whether he's willing to accept "an imputation of guilt" as per Burdick v US (note IANAL). Mr. Slatten, had been a contractor for the controversial company Blackwater and was sentenced for his role in the killing of 17 Iraqi civilians in Nisour Square in Baghdad — a massacre that left one of the most lasting stains on the United States of the war.
